Brazing Steel with a Propane Torch - Repairing a Mounting Bracket

Workers replacing a fascia board smashed the mounting bracket for a sun shield (they are the same guys that smashed the main water valve that I repaired in my ProPress video and did a poor job with the stucco). I was able to straighten out the bracket but there was a crack on it. Thankfully, this was easy to repair by brazing it.

I have made several attempts to brazing steel with a propane torch, with poor results. Your short video made my day and my project succeeded. Thanks so much!

You think it's showing enough to make a RC trailer with it as the welds

I didn't think propane torches could get hot enough for bronze. Mine don't... Ever! Time to upgrade. 👍

Higher power propane torches definitely have the heat needed.

Hi, thank you for the video. I was wondering if I could ask a question. I have a 'fancy' expensive office gaming chair that has failed on a weld for the seat base (where the base bolts to the seat). The metal component looks very similar to the piece you worked on here. It looks as though the weld has failed. I was hoping to be able to braze the component using MAP gas. What do think?
@DragonBuilds
@DragonBuilds 2 года назад
How big is the piece?

I actually did this exact thing, ended up letting the gas out of the cylinder and warping the base

How’s the Chicago electric 80 amp welder holding up? Would you still recommend it as budget welder?
@DragonBuilds
@DragonBuilds 3 года назад
As a budget welder to get started, yes. However I found it could not handle 3/32 7018 electrodes despite claiming to so I returned it and bought a Forney 120v stick welder for $200 which works great with 7018.

Ive been a welder for 18yrs my dad was a welder now he is a nuclear welding engineer and my grandfather taught him how to weld. I will say without a doubt that Amico makes the best budget welding machines. The cts has plasma cutter, stick welder, and tig (I know every stick machine can tig). The mts is mig, tig, stick. Both will run off of 110 or 220. Check em out. Chicago electric will always be trash. They're small spot welders that's all.
@thisisyourcaptainspeaking2259
@@rebel1187What do you think of the cts-200, or would the cts-400 be the better choice? I want to do light stuff up to at least 5/16. Currently using a 220VAC flux wire Lincoln and a 50's 220VAC buzz box for stick. I want to add plasma cutting.

can i use this for small art metal projects? copper, silverware, brass? 🤔 I don't really wana buy a TIG or oxygen acetylene cuz I'm scared of getting hurt. lol
@DragonBuilds
@DragonBuilds 3 года назад
You can definitely use a propane touch for metal art, but you'll need the right brazing or soldering filler.
@dec23
@dec23 3 года назад
@@DragonBuilds I'm gona try it. Initially what i was using was soldering/flux. But what's happening is my finished solders are falling apart if I put another solder near it. I want to combine junk metal together. Kinda like this: www.pinterest.com/pin/441352832211658870/ I will try this technique. Next I may try oxygen acetylene. I'm just so scared of getting hurt.

@@dec23 That rabbit is super cute! If you are making many joints very close to each other I think you will need to use an arc welder. The Forney Easy Weld stick welder I have can weld thick and thin metals, and on lower settings can be used on a 15a household circuit. Welding looks scary, but if you follow the safety instructions and wear good quality protective equipment, you will be fine.
@dec23
@dec23 3 года назад
@@DragonBuilds It's very cute. I wana make art with that consistency. Joints close together using scrap metal; bolts, washers, copper, brass, etc. Is this the welder you have? www.forneyind.com/products/welding/stick/welders/forney-easy-weld-100-st-stick-machine The price is decent. My dad says the same about welding. He is an electrician and tells me as long as it's grounded it is safe to use. :) Thanks for your help.
@DragonBuilds

@@dec23 Yeah that is the welder I have. It is a good value. You will also need some accessories like a welding table (Harbor Freight has a nice inexpensive folding one) and safety gear.

I am in the process of repairing my steel garden gate door made of 1.5 inch 16 gauge steel square tubing. The post that holds the swing door has rotted at the bottom. I cut the rotten area out and cleaned it up. I do not have traditional welding skills nor do i have the money to invest in such equipment. However i do own a bernzomatic propane torch. Will brazing the metal post together a good candidate for my application??
@DragonBuilds
@DragonBuilds 3 года назад
For steel of that size you'd need an oxy-fuel torch to braze. One option you can do is to find a piece of square tube that fits inside the rotten post and just bolt it together.
@drumboarder1
@drumboarder1 3 года назад
How much would it weaken the steel I wonder
@DragonBuilds
@DragonBuilds 3 года назад
Brazed joints can be stronger than the steel itself in some cases.

@@DragonBuilds no I mean the heating process, I'm thinking about repairing some coping on a skate ramp and brazing seems the easiest way of going about it. However I'm worried it might damage either the coping itself or the concrete around it
@DragonBuilds
@DragonBuilds 3 года назад
@@drumboarder1 for larger projects like a skate ramp you'll need an oxygen acetylene torch or arc welder. Brazing can be done with a propane or MAPP torch for small parts only.
@drumboarder1
@drumboarder1 3 года назад
@@DragonBuilds well I'm only talking about a very small section of a 50mm pipe that doesn't meet up with the pipe next to it perfectly and it's maybe 1.5mm thick at most. Outside of weakening the metal or damaging the concrete, filler material would be my next concern, though I haven't looked at it in person for a few weeks so it might not be an issue. Thanks for the replies though and off topic, christ I hope you become the more popular gum flavoured rice EDIT: yes gum flavoured rice, screw it
