Actually he picked the wrong the wrong vans. He points out a brown van at screen right, and a “Duke City Flowers” van at screen left. At the end a brown van enters from screen left, and a locksmith van from screen right. So he had good instincts, but bad observational skills.

Yes, he lied. Why do you think he wouldn't lie? That's what this scene is illustrating: some people believe that undercover police can't lie and say they aren't police, but that is untrue. Police may have to identify themselves as police before making an arrest, but that's a different subject, and in this scene he does identify himself as a cop before he arrests Badger.

Please do read the Constitution - it's a great founding document, and it's not that long. You won't find anything in the U.S. Constitution that says that police have to identify themselves as police. Police are allowed to lie about a lot of things. Think about it - how would undercover police stay "undercover," if they had to identify themselves as police whenever anyone asked if they were police?

This dude smart enough to identify the undercover cop vans, but when the undercover cop said: 'I don't even think I wanna buy anymore. I think you turned me off to the whole thing.' that didn't raise any red flags. That doesn't sound like an addict at all. That line screams 'desperate cop uses a hail mary line because he knows he's been made, so he might as well go for it'. No way a dude smart enough to recognize undercover vans and cops would fall for a line like that, lol. This is TV logic. It worked because they needed it to work.

i dont know where anyone got the idea in their heads that cops have to tell you when they're undercover. like... isn't that the whole point of being undercover? plus, even if it's like an after-the-fact thing where the investigation might be invalidated or something if they don't, who the hell said cops _ever_ play by the rules? hank is notable in this show for _almost_ being an exception, but even he doesn't give enough of a shit about you or a lot of the 'rules' at play. it's so dumb dude

It's because legally a cop *in uniform* has to identify themselves when asked. It's why you see a lot of people in cop-auditing interaction videos asking for name, badge number, department, etc because the police officer must do so by law. I imagine this kind of got warped through the telephone game (and stupid criminals being stupid) into the whole thing about cops having to tell you they're cops, which is hilarious, because being undercover has specific provisions that expressly allow them to not lie, and even commit some crimes.

The funny thing is, if you say something in a matter-of-fact way like it's common knowledge, plus you say it's in the constitution, or the dictionary, or the history books, people are very likely to believe you. Notice how he laughs & tells Badger to "ask it, like, official" as if this is really common knowledge on the street. It's like he's insulting Badger's ego for not being streetwise, and so Badger gets distracted by that instead of questioning his logic.

Some say its entrapment if an undercover cop tells you he's not a cop, and then arrests you when you try to sell him drugs. Here's the thing though, you still chose to commit the crime; if the undercover cop tries to persuade, or coerce, you to do something you normally wouldn't do in that instance, that'd be another story, but if all they had to do was just say they're not a cop, then you're just an idiot.
