In this video about breaking closed guard I show 2 common mistakes I see my white belts run into. They're simple mistakes but ones that can make a huge difference when breaking closed guard in BJJ.
The staggered hand grip guard break is usually the first one most people learn and is the one I share in the video.
If you're having trouble breaking closed guard. I hope this video helps!

I went to my first class today and was in the class with blue belts and purple belts. It was rough. I felt like it was literally trial by fire. "Here's your belt. Good luck." The instructor talks about having good fundamentals before trying the fancy stuff, but I don't have any fundamentals, and I'm paired with guys that have been doing this for years. I made it through the entire class of getting choked out and tossed around, but I felt that that was more because I have heart and surely wasn't because I was holding my own. I feel like very basic menuvors like this would have helped, but it wasn't taught at all. I think a class filled with beginners would be better for a beginner.

White belt here. For me, I don't know how to train/ get better at keeping my breath when a guy who has REALLY heavy hips and crushes me in side control or mount. Also, I get way too exhausted trying to oompa my way out of the bottom, shoulder escape or trap and roll. Not sure if it's because I roll with blue belts who are bigger than me. I don't have a great base and I am not exactly sure why. It may be that I don't drive my hips low, and need more flexibility to get my legs out to a wider position. Also, I cannot stay in guard for very long at all, so I get crushed in those positions ALOT. The guys I train with won't give anything up, which is frustrating because in a month all I do is fight off submissions and haven't learned anything offensive yet, but I guess that's the process (getting over my ego!!) Thanks Chewy.
@jaddyjacobs3714
@jaddyjacobs3714 8 лет назад
There were the problems my wife and I faced when we first started rolling, unfortunately there is a great deal of ego rolling (blue belts) instead of step by step (process) coaching. Video tape yourself/practice at home or do some private lessons with someone you can trust and have a set plan to learn 3 moves and 3 counter moves in a month, continue to build a simple game for yourself. Its not easy finding the right balance. I feel your pain and wish you the best but stick with it. Please understand there is so much egos in every part of our lives. Good luck!!
@VestigialHead
@VestigialHead 7 лет назад
+Jaddy Jacobs You will likely find that if you roll with a higher belt such as a purple or brown belt they will have less ego and may let you get to dominant positions so they can work on improving their own game as well as yours. Blue belt is still early on and their ego tends to be a bit more pronounced. They have learnt enough to beat white belts so they often will try to push that feeling. I have found this to be true with all the different martial arts I have trained.

So, I've seen that you answer questions from you comment section sometimes. I'm hoping you can help me out. I'm a brand new white belt - 29 years old in a week. I was training consistently for a few weeks and then one day while rolling, I got hit in the rib and now it's bruised/cracked. It's been a couple weeks since it happened and I went back and drilled some techniques in class today and quickly learned that it's nowhere near healed enough for me to be able to really train. I've basically just been going and watching class. It's driving me crazy because, like all new white belts I'm sure, I've been bitten by the BJJ bug and I'm hooked. Anyway, my question is this - what can I be doing to try to make SOME semblance of progress while I'm healing up? Also, any tips on healing ribs faster? Thanks in advance and keep it up - I dig the channel!

try using both your hands, see the bone chew is talking about, everyone has two of em, so put both ur palms on his bones and pin him down, he won't be able to turn since he is pinned down completely, u have to pin him so hard that he can't fit his hand between his butt and the mat. and only THEN try to use your hips to break his guard.
@andrespunkfan
@andrespunkfan 4 года назад
Realistically if your opponent knows this is coming you can't just outmuscle it. The hips are stronger than your arms regardless of your technique. This works because you let them mentally get occupied with finding a submission while working out. I often offer a bogus attempt to find my space. To be honest in my style of jj I prefer when people try this because I can kick my feet out quickly and use my legs to crush the ribs, I've actually broken some ribs that way. Every technique has a counter and every counter a technique. Anyone who tries to teach you every possible scenario instead of an understanding of concepts and the leverage and physics behind them is a fraud and is incapable of moving beyond their style.
