The part where you explained it being okay to eat when you're not hungry, and also to listen to your body really made me realise just how complicated diet culture has made everything seem. It's literally JUST FOOD. We naturally treat it so normally (e.g. when we're kids) but then end up messing it up by overcomplicating it and stressing out about it when we get older.

it's so interresting, as a french person I never feared bread at my lowest, and in general bread is not really diet culture related in France, like if you're on a diet or something as shitty you'll still eat bread, and that's interesting to observe that it can vary from country to country idk

Grave ici le pain c'est la base haha et je me souviens quand je limitais à mort mes calories y'a quelques années, je mangeais du pain tous les jours, au petit déj ET à midi ; d'ailleurs à part le pain je mangeais pas grand chose ^^''' mais ça m'a jamais traversé l'esprit d'éliminer le pain !

The whole keto bull hasn't really gained that much traction in France compared to the English speaking world. I think it has a lot to do with that. Low-carb is king in the English speaking diet culture world and many of the American fitness/health whatever gurus will not eat bread.

For so long I was terrified of breaking diet culture rules, of eating my fear foods, of even thinking of letting go and just DOING it. But wow, the freedom of eating what you want when you want is incomparable to anything I’ve ever experienced. For so long I was trapped in my own mental prison, and I genuinely didn’t think I would ever escape. But every time I challenged myself, every time I ate the fear food no matter how scared I was, every time I stopped myself before stepping on the scale was one step closer to where I wanted to be. I have never felt happier than I do now. It’s incredible to finally be on the other side, and experience life to the absolute fullest.

Yeah I agree, those rules are just taking food too seriously like eating cereal is not a bad thing to do like I eat cereal all the time and I eat bread, in fact the 2 mains things I eat are cereal and bread and nuts, crisps and chocolate and fruit, thats my main diet but I like the foods I eat, which is the main thing. Also I think eating healthy is good but eating healthy should not be a chore it should be enjoyable like I enjoy eating certain fruit but I couldn't just only eat healthy things as I feel doing both makes me more satisfied.

OMG okay so I did NOT know you studied dietetics and nutrition at uni! Could you actually be working as a dietitian then now if you fancied it? Or no interest in that area? Also I cannot be the only one who has never in their life weighed out cereal omg this is pure madness to me ...?also GOLDEN NUGGETS WERE MY GOLD TOOOOOO! ELITE OF THE CEREALS QUEEN! I do feel quite privileged in many ways that I managed to avoid adopting any of these food rules and actually grew up SOCIALLY before social media had pervaded so invasively through society - which I believe has definitely contributed to the spread of diet culture and it is quite heartbreaking to me to see ! Food is just so much more than fuel - it's connection, it can just be soul-nourishing without adding any nutritional benefit to your life whatsoever and FULL FOOD FREEDOM IS WHAT EVERYONE DESERVES! Thanks for sharing Helena - I'm sure this will help many who may struggle!

Ahhh this video is so helpful and comforting !! I just had a massive bowl of fruit and it was AMAZING!! I hate diet culture food rules so much. They have fucked up totally my relationship with food. I mean, right now I dont restrict my food intake anymore, skip meals or hide food and that kind of things, and I have overpassed so many fear foods like oil and eating carbs, but I´m still not able to enjoy food the way I remember I used to do when I was younger. I miss so much getting excited about eating certain things, being happy when someone bought something for me or cooked something special, going out to try new food and just sharing the whole stuff with my friends or family. I always ate kind of "balanced" since I dont really enjoy most common fast food or liked to eat it everyday and I always kind of had natural choices since I always liked fruits,veggies,homemade meals and that stuff, but I did enjoy dessert few times a week, baking something for my family or sharing some snacks with my friends. I always had specially a sweet tooth and a love for cooking new recipes. Now I feel tired of food sometimes, tired of eating, tired of being guilty for it and tired of being kind of forced to do it. I do not feel excited about eating most of my meals even I like them most, but the guilt after or the "not listening to my cravings" make me feel weird. Like, I do love oatmeal, but sometimes I would love to eat plenty of it with peanut butter and coffe, but I cant since I know it is calorie dense. Or I like rice but I feel bad for eating my whole serving size in orden to recover my weight so I dont enjoy it anymore. I also listen to food rules unintentionally, for example when I go out and say I will try something new, most of the time I end ordering the lower calorie or "healthier/fit" option even I really wanted to try something more but grilled chicken and rice or a soup kind of thing. Diet culture mentality has also made me think that I will get fat eventually or not going to be able to control myself after by letting me eat some foods, even ONCE. The demonization of sweet treats bc of "sugar addiction" or pasta by being "refined flour and producing high glucose picks" make me never eat them, when if we think rationally, we can know nothing bad happens by eating eat in some ocassions. When we are kids we just eat by intuition, when we crave it, when we want it, we know how to say "no thanks" or "let me try some of it", leaving the plate when we feel full and SO MANY MORE. I would love to feel free when doing my food choices again and dont feel tired of everything

I'm actually so grateful for your videos. I never noticed how many restrictions I make in terms of foods or diet, I guess I just picked habits up along the way, which is quiet upsetting to me now :( thank u for sharing your experiances and knowledge with us viewers! Time to start living life to the fullest, without any unnecessary restrictions

I recently found your channel, so I'm catching up on your videos, but I'm sitting here eating lunch (distracted by your video, rule #2 is broken LOL), and I hear the microwave beep, and I look at my cat and ask him "how did I leave the microwave running???" it literally took me 3 minutes to realize it was your microwave beeping in your video. The only diet culture thing I do is eating more carbs at lunch and more protein at dinner, but it’s more because i need to be sure that i eat enough proteins, because I’m vegetarian an a non-vegetarian family🧡 i love your videos

Thanks for making this video, when things are really bad for me mentally I turn to disordered eating for control reasons. TW…I literally cut out whole food groups, I stop eating bread, drinking milk even tho I drink an alternative and other things. Diet culture literally sucks the joy out of my life

Also can we normalise being hungrier one day than the other or having eaten meals plus snacks and still fancying something not out of boredom but just wanting it. Also snacks I'm sick of people saying I snack to much or to much sugar/chocolate etc like I love snacks whats wrong with that been recovered for almost 4 years but really been struggling with not eating then binging this last year and guilt. Also normalise that somedays its ok to not want to exercise/go for a walk especially if it's ur time of month or ur tired or not feeling great etc

Thank you for another amazing video Helena! I have a question for you (if you're comfortable to answer)..Do you still weight lift? So many people I see recovering from eating disorders are doing 'reverse dieting' and lifting heavy weights whilst they increase calories but I can't help but think that it just maintains the mindset of calorie control and physique control but in a more societally 'acceptable way'(for some people). It definitely has caused me to maintain my disordered relationship with food and exercise and so much content out there about it is so damaging! I'd love to hear your thoughts/take on this and maybe a video challenging exercise rules. Sorry if you have mentioned this before or on instagram as i don't really use it so may have missed it! xx

I tried this, thinking I was in recovery, and then I relapsed. I'm now in treatment and they would never advocate reverse dieting or even that heavy exercise during recovery, especially if it's for physique/aesthetics reasons. I think the goal is intuitive eating and food freedom, which in my mind doesn't equate well with any form of gradually increasing calories/still heavily exercising to offset. Sorry that I answered instead, hope that's okay!

Diet culture demonizes so many things like carbs and desserts/snacks and liquid calories etc. just because they’re high in calorie, it’s taken me a while but I’ve finally realized that even if these foods aren’t as nutritious as vegetables, they serve their own purpose making it easier and more fun to get in calories for the day to maintain a healthy weight, or else I would just be sitting here eating 5 pounds of lettuce to try and meet my needs which is ridiculous.

A video breaking diet culture rules produced by a VEGAN; the absolute ULTIMATE in trendy diet culture which excludes an entire food group that humans have been eating since the dawn of their existence?? I mean it's laughable. And to say that any recommendations around what, when and how to consume food is based purely on how we will look?? I mean, it's more than ridiculous..... anyone reasonable person avoids processed sugar coated cereal as a general guideline for breakfast because it's trash food and does nothing for one's internal health. I find this video and it's maker shallow and superficial. No substance whatsoever.

I’m not attacking dieting in this video. I’m attacking diet culture which is a set of rules and beliefs around food that he’s, are based on how we look - that’s what diet culture is you can look it up if you need a proper definition. If you don’t want to eat cereal don’t eat it I don’t care
