I totally agree - if a batter calls time verbally that second time, just ignore it. If he calls time, throws his hand up in the air, steps out of the box? Then you give them the strike. We already worry about the umpire's sight, we don't need to worry about their hearing, too. Otherwise, that leaves room for the batter to play things off, too. "Oh, I didn't say *time* - I said the last call was a *crime* !"

Or just don’t talk when you’re in such a situation….. just saying 🤷🏼‍♂️ I DO fundamentally agree with you the umpire should probably just ignore it in such a situation but, as a player, in basically ANY sport….. don’t give the umpire/ref a reason to penalize you in the first place
@jdubb9688

Right on. That would be the logical way to deal with it. I assume if the umpire could do it again he’d take that approach unless he is full of ego like some tend to be. The less I know umpires exist the better job they did. They’re human and make errors, but adding more things to apply doesn’t make it any easier for an already difficult job.

"There's been plenty of times in my career where I tried to call time out and the umpire doesn't grant it to me." -Antonelli. Exactly. There is no rule that obligates an umpire to grant a requested time out by the batter.
@cwagner4704
@cwagner4704 3 месяца назад
Antonelli is right , as an umpire I have on more than one occasion not granted time to a batter . Why grant it when you know granting it is gonna result in a problem . Not a good game management move . The ensuing arguments certainly took more time from the game than having the rule would ever have saved , So ultimately, you’re not speeding the game up. Just ignore the request and let play continue.

“Calling a timeout as a batter” isn’t a command it is a request to the umpire. I agree the simple and logical remedy to end this foolish situation for future is to simply not grant the request for time as an umpire. I understand the umpire believes he is applying the rule here, but some rules are stupid until they get changed. Let’s use some common sense as umpires to let baseball happen rather than whatever this is.

Totally agree. Just let the damn players play. I get why the rule is there in place. The speedier game is much better, and its a way to prevent players from calling time all the damn time, and umpires always automatically granting it. This is to discourage players from asking for time, and to discourage the umpire from granting it every time. Umpire getting way too involved in the game, I consider it interference.

1:00 I think the first Time Out wasn't a time out request from the batter. He was just chatting up the umpire and the umpire called for time and the umpire just put that onto the batter. The batter can do anything he wants while the pitch clock runs, if he didn't say: "Time out." (which he may have, I don't know) for that first time out then this is on the umpire. But it's spring. This is where you need to make the mistakes.

I think the umpire called time for him on the first pitch since he was arguing. Then, Bogarts actually called time himself on the last pitch which the umpire granted and then called him for the timeout violation. If that was the case, shouldn’t they just let the player argue the call all they want, and if they’re not ready by 8 seconds, call the pitch clock violation there. Don’t just charge them a timeout without their consent to save him from the clock.

Batters just need to get in the box, get ready to hit and then hit. They're lucky they even get time outs for no reason, they have huge batters eyes behind them, and no-one should be moving in their eyeline, so what possible reason does a batter have that the Umpire wouldn't also notice and call time themselves. They wouldn't have this pitch clock problem if they just played like they did back before WW2, where no-one would call for time for no reason just to disrupt the flow of a pitcher. Games used to be done with in 2 hours, they don't need to go for over 3.

If they weren't wasting time just to waste time & disrupt the pitcher, and games were going back to finishing below 2 and a half hours, those situations they could just back away & ask for time and would get it. The pitch clock reduced games from over 3 hours on average, back down to just over 2 and a half hours. If players keep up the good pace the pitch clock will fade away in importance and the current "1 time per at-bat" will be used for those rare situations where it's needed.

Umpires are the most sensitve and yet most aggressive element in sports. Clean house, and redo punishment for umpires who inject themselves into the game for NO reason. Its so unwatchable.

If they were trying to ruin baseball with challenges and pitch clocks, they have succeeded.

This whole thing would of been avoided with the computer doing balls and strikes. Would eliminate most arguments, this crap and ejections. Play ball!

Too much attention on “speeding up the game”. It’s ridiculous. I’ve never been to a game and wished it would end sooner. If you’re tired of watching, then leave or change the channel. The needless micromanagement is ruining the game.

I hate all of this pitch clock nonsense. If you really want to shorten games and save wear and tear on pitchers, just give the batter three strikes to put the ball in play. End the round after round of 10, 12, 14 pitch at bats because the batter can foul them off. If you’re that good, put it in play somewhere or you are out, just like on a third strike fouled ball bunt.

The pitch clock is necessary. These things happen. There is no need to talk when you are at bat….be quiet.

The game is ruined with the pitch clock. Who cares how long the games last. It's a long, hard game, deal with it. All other games have clocks. This one didn't, and it shouldn't. They are trying to fit baseball into a time box for the networks.
