BREAKING NEWS: PSA Responds to Wemby 1 of 1 Card Cleaning Fiasco

The President of PSA, Ryan Hoge, has recently made a statement on his personal X (twitter) account (I had to make myself an X account just to be able to see it lol), stating that card cleaning is deemed a form of alteration by PSA, but that they can only do so if they can detect it has been cleaned. This is all in relation to a recent conversation about the 1/1 Prizm Black of Victor Wembanyama, in which the friend of the owner of the card shouted out Kurt's Card Care in the video of them walking through PSA to get the card graded.

Thank you for sharing, it’s altered. PSA needs to do a better job of catching altered cards.

The challenge is how do you perform a detection test on something you don’t want to damage?

Yeah, but that is a tough one when it comes to card cleaning. There's clear ways they can detect trimming and coloration, and other forms of altering, but cleaning is nearly impossible to detect without doing some sort of chemistry on the card that would damage it in the testing process.

In my opinion, even if they did detect a trace amount of something, that Wemby card is huge. PSA wants their name on cards like that. I doubt they would ever decertify it knowing how big the card is for the hobby and their reputation

How do you clean a card?

I mean, if you wanna do it in legit ways that the hobby community all says is fine, a microfiber cloth is cool. If you wanna do it and officially 'alter' it, a chemical cleaning substance that might also fill in small dimples and scratches. It's that second way that's being called out now though.

LOL. That's hilarious. Hopefully not quite as rare as SSP! The hobby is a reflection of where we're at as a society though, I think.

I personally consider there to be a huge difference between kurts approach & taking out a pair of sheers and slicing off an edge of a card. I believe there's a clear difference between altering (cutting off pieces or coloring in with a marker/colored pencil) and cleaning a card whether it just wiping off smudges or as far as soaking a card.

@JeffreyMello I personally would consider soaking a card altering it, in a pretty similar vein as a slight trim. Both are doing something that may at first be hard to detect, but that are changing the card in pretty fundamental ways. Plus, with the soak, it seems like it could effect the card later too. I had a card once where the cardboard and the chromium layer once just suddenly separated themselves cleanly from each other on a card i bought, I wouldn't be surprised if some sort of soak from a previous owner was the culprit. I don't know for sure, but it makes logical sense that a chemical composition could create that sort of effect.

I don't want to call them liars but its interesting to think about how they somewhat have a vested interest in this card. Arguably he is the next Goat in basketball, which means once steph and Lebron retire this card is going to be one of the pillars of the hobby, if not THE pillar. If I am the grading company looking at this card I understand the ramifications if I stamped this card as altered. And also understand the years of marketing and advertising I would get stamping if I stamp it a PSA10. It was also interesting that he said they didn't detect anything on the surface. Does this mean they could see chemical use leftover on the sides of the card? Maybe I am reading too much into that. Either way, if I was a high roller and I was thinking about going for this card, I would just hold off and go for an RPA.

100%. That's what it all boils down to, if PSA wants a card in a PSA slab, doesn't matter if its been altered, it's getting slabbed. If this doesnt wake the hobby up to joke psa is, nothing will.

To be fair though, I don't know how they could've known before grading that it was cleaned with a chemical substance. PSA is making too much profit and is too far ahead of the competition to risk some shenanigans for something that doesn't t really do much in helping it have competitive advantage.

I disagree. I think people underestimate just home much advertising and marketing is obtained by having your companies name on the biggest card in the hobby. There is no risk in slabbing it a 10. Nobody is ever going to crack that card open ever. @@scoa

Im glad this crap is getting called out. I do ferl bad for guy who pulled it though. You pull a life changing card, go with the shop owner to grade, get a 10, and shop owner proceeds to shoutout kurts. Its sad because the idiot who mentioned kurts isnt losing out, its the guy who pulled it.

I definitely feel bad for him too, but at the same time he must've legit agreed to use Kurt's on the card. I wish an lcs owner though could provide some knowledge about the potential risk of that kind of decision though if the owner of the card didn't know.

@@scoa oh no doubt he knew the card was cleaned. I was just thinking like if I was in his shoes with a card I could retire off of, and it now has this controversy tied to it because the fool couldnt keep his mouth shut. Hell still get a ton for it, but guarantee hell have the thought the rest of his life of "could I have gotten more if the dummy hadn't run his mouth". At the very least, I wouldnt be going to his shop anymore. But at least it's in the open. Whoever drops the bag for the card will know it's been altered.
