Breast cancer is common, aggressive, and growing in its presence in the US, yet recent adjustments to breast cancer screening guidelines may not have provided sufficient protection for at-risk women or promoted health equity.
In this episode, Cheruba Prabakar, MD, a minimally invasive surgeon, board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist, and Founder and CEO of Lamorinda Gynecology & Surgery, sheds light on the new United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) breast cancer screening guidelines, highlighting concerns about the biannual recommendation, missed cases, underserved populations, and lack of guidance for dense breasts and older women. Advocating for more proactive guidelines, including annual screenings starting at 40 with no upper age limit, Prabakar recommends communicating the updates through state lobbying, social media, and patient education.
