Breathing and Relaxation
Everyone has a different pain tolerance and reacts to pain in a very personal way. Women should think about their goals for pain control and discuss them with their OB provider during pregnancy in order to be prepared for labor and delivery. When you experience pain you tense up. The more you tense up, the more fear you experience. This makes you experience more pain, which makes you more tense and more afraid. Hormones are released that can actually make labor longer and more painful. You can block the brain’s sense of pain by matching the pain with something else or by crowding the nerve gates. A positive attitude, realistic expectations, breathing, a calm environment, positioning, touch and massage, imagination and perception, and aromatherapy are all non-pharmacological interventions that can lessen your pain and ease your labor. These interventions also prove helpful for women who are planning on an epidural, since contractions and pain occur before an epidural is possible. My most important tip for pain management is to have a positive attitude. Have realistic expectations and be prepared for labor and delivery to hurt a lot. If this is your first baby, take a prenatal class so that you’re well-informed by reliable sources and know what your pain control options are. One of the things I say most commonly on labor and delivery is take slow, deep breaths. Holding your breath and hyperventilating affect the oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in your blood and will eventually start to affect how well your organs can function, including your uterus. The key is to take rhythmic, deep breaths and coordinate breathing with contractions. Along with breathing, vocalizing can be helpful and empowering. Muscle relaxation is both a mental exercise and a physical experience. Imagine each muscle from your head to your toes relaxing. Use progressive muscle relaxation exercises at night before going to bed. Create a relaxing environment. Choose a trained companion to be with you during labor. There are many different positions that are possible in the hospital during labor. Walking can be very useful during the first stage of labor. Upright positions, like walking and dancing, use gravity to increase the work of contractions. This position, the labor dance, can be very relaxing and lets your labor support partner reach your back for soothing pressure or massage. The lift is another upright technique that can help move a baby into a preferred position for labor and delivery. Leaning positions help to relieve pressure on the pelvic floor and create more space and freedom for your baby to change positions in your pelvis. Sitting positions allow you to rest and conserve energy while laboring. Rocking chairs can be relaxing and soothing during labor. Side-lying positions can help if you’re having trouble relaxing. Squatting can be done during the second stage of labor or when it’s time to push. Hands and knees can be helpful if you have back pain or want your support person to rub your lower back. A warm bath is comforting and can actually increase your pain threshold or ability to cope with pain. You can also try a shower and let water spray directly on the area that feels especially sore, like your lower back, for example. It is helpful to use this as guided imagery. Touch and massage is helpful because it communicates reassurance and counteracts something painful with something relaxing. Counter-pressure helps to offset intensity from contractions and eases ligament, muscle, and joint pain. During a contraction, apply steady, gradual pressure to the sacrum, or the bony area below the small of the back and above the buttocks. With the woman sitting in bed with her legs bent up at the knee, push on her knees and aim to push her thighs back into her hips during contractions. This is especially helpful for women who are having a lot of back pain during labor. Distracting your mind will help to keep you in a positive and calm state that helps you to manage your pain. Mental distraction can come in many forms. Affirmation involves focusing on words that affirm your experience and strength. Another example of imagination and perception is listening to stories. The rainbow technique helps you to visualize and vividly experience all the colors of the rainbow. You may also try guided imagery. Pre-determine some of your favorite places you’ve ever been to or a place that you want to go to. Certain scents such as lavender, rose, and frankincense have been used during labor to reduce anxiety, fear, pain, and even nausea. Knowing your options for pain control will help you have the best experience possible during labor and delivery. If you have more questions about it, talk with your OB provider. And if you have more questions in the future for me, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at IntermountainMoms or on our Instagram, @IntermounainMoms, and recommend us to your friends and family too.

I agree. I'm on baby #3. (Which I guess also proves that child birth can't be THAT bad, or we wouldn't be on #3...) I think the most important thing to remember is the Pain/Tension/Fear cycle. It truly makes a difference to relax and have a positive attitude. My most difficult labor memories are the times when I let my fears get the better of me, making my body tense up and thus increasing pain. But, I will admit, it's easier said than done! I've been listening and watching this video all throughout my pregnancy. As my due date approaches, I feel more confident that I'll remember the tips she gives and be able to apply them during my labor. I find that knowing what to expect is the best way to relieve any irrational labor fears. So don't be afraid to watch the labor videos (as well as c-sections, epidurals (even if you don't plan on getting one), etc.) so you know exactly what to expect. Many times, our imagination is worst than reality. That really helped me before my first labor. Remember, we are awesome and our bodies were literally MADE for this. Trust your bodies and yourselves. Good luck to all the moms to be ! :)

These are good tips, ladies mentally prepare. Do what feels right and DONT FIGHT THE PROCESS. Let your body do what the creator meant for it too. Remember fear can be a debilitating thing. Fear can stop labor all together...TRUST YOUR BODY! create Mantras for yourself. Labor will be intense, for some painful but It's not impossible ladies. Let the contractions rock you. Believe it or not these are great great tips watch Ina may Gaskin

I had 3 babies. Twice I had the epidural. The first time I had back labor and I was in SO much pain with contractions. I got the epidural and I was able to have a smooth delivery. My second one was a breeze! I got up to a 5cm no problem and the epidural was placed no issues. He was a larger baby and got a little stuck but I pushed and when I made noise with my pushes he finally moved and cane out! Both of my labors took 24 hours. My 3rd baby was completely different and unpredictable. I had to be induced she was late. I got one dose of cytotec and had non stop contractions 1 min apart and labor was only 7 hours! It happened too fast for my epidural to work I delivered 20mins after getting it. I was NOT prepared at all for a natural birth! My legs weren’t numb or tingling at all and I knew my epidural wasn’t working. I didn’t plan for that or even knew how to breathe ! Lol I kept asking the nurses what do I do?! 😂 Well I screamed like crazy and she came out only when I made noise. Sometimes staying quiet doesn’t allow you to get into the pressure you need! My babies were bigger each time 6lbs-7lbs-8lbs 🎉

Labor is not painful. Try to change your mindset and perception of what you think labor will be like. Like the nurse here suggests take deep breaths, breathe through the labor, breathe through your belly. It's not as scary as it seems. It's a natural process, so don't tense up and breathe through the contractions. Don't stress out about it, you can do it!

For me the biggest thing that helped in labor was to relax my stomach muscles. It’s more than just not fearing it, it’s letting your body relax like it would if it’s not in a state of fear. I’d have to remember to relax my stomach and then pain would immensely drop immediately. Also slow deep breathing.

Thank you for this video! It's a good summary of helpful comfort measures, BUT these would only be helpful if the mom & her partner were practicing them for a few months before labor begins. A good childbirth education class series would really help with this. As a nurse/childbirth educator, it saddens me to see so many women go into labor without taking such classes. Videos help, but moms need a place to practice with their partner, to ask questions, to learn the pros & cons of interventions or no interventions, etc. The techniques learned in class need to be practiced at home at least 2-3 times a week, daily if possible. Most expectant parents have participated in some kind of competitive sports in their past, so it's useful to think about labor as an athletic event which requires both mental & physical conditioning. I ask my students what would happen if they had missed a week of practice, and they show up for the game or event. Most would be benched. Why? Because they don't know the strategy, & their body is not conditioned enough. In most cases, they'd be a detriment to the team. Benching is NOT an option in labor! So, please find a good class series, don't miss any classes if possible, practice at home, & you'll be ready for just about anything!

Yep and in some cases will cause an array of other interventions and maybe even lead to csection. Definitely very important to be well informed about all the different forms of pain control methods before you just decide to choose an epidural. Also being flat on your back doesn’t allow for baby to come down as fast. Best to be able to move around. In my own experience I now really hate it. expecting my 4th baby now and praying for a whole new experience WITHOUT an epidural.

I feel guilty knowing if I can’t handle the pain that I might ask for the shot lol but I guess we’ll have to see lol . Blessings to everyone:)

I just feel like someone should physically knock me out . I don’t think I can handle labor. I could barely handle my cramps. I feel like if someone says ANYTHING I might take offense too, they’ll be cussed out... I don’t handle pain well. It’s going to take a very well trained team to deal with me & im not excited or proud about it 😭 I’m about to throw up this is making me feel so overwhelmed I’m not even due until April 🤕

With my last birth I labored at home for almost the entire labor and went to the hospital when I reached the pushing stage. I had a doula but she didn't check me or monitor the baby (we just timed contractions and made sure I could feel the baby kicking). I don't have a doula this time. Are there any dangers to laboring at home as long as possible without the baby being monitored? I feel more comfortable laboring at home but I don't feel comfortable with a home birth.

I’ve heard pushing while on your hands and knees can prevent tearing bc the baby’s head applies less pressure on your perineum

Some people do scream so much that it takes ur breathe and life, lolzz. I had my first baby boy and the lady next to my room was screaming so loud and seriousely scary loud that almost took my life. My blood pressure gone high and skin color become pale and yellow and started shaking. I was thinking that are they cutting stomach while u are conciouse or what? My midwife had to shut the door and put some music to distract my attention where i dont listen her scary screams. I was in pain as well but tried to be more relaxed bec i was thinking about the beautiful days of my childhood and my husband who once was my bf and love. My midwife was shocked to see the pain level on the screen but i never scary screamed. I was in so much pain that i was telling my husband and midwife to cut my stomach and take out the baby bec it was painfull but i still never scary screamed. They had to start my contractions through IV which is much painful contractions than having naturally one. As midwife says some women do a little bit more drama to get more attention and also spoken to some friends who has 3 and 4 kids and who told me that u need to do a little bit of drama to get more good help and attention. I dont know. Best of luck to all mummies

I guess I'm lucky that my first reaction to really intense pain is to start taking deep breathes. I think it's because I have really bad chronic pain *and* I've been through some REALLY intensely painful medical procedures (including surgery on my arm... wide awake O_O that REEEEEALLY hurt, and that's just one of many things), so I've sort of practiced it enough that it *almost* comes naturally. After the initial "OH SHIT" when intense pain starts, I remember to breathe deep to calm myself because my anxiety is so bad and breathing deep really helps me keep from panicking completely.
@zzevonplant
@zzevonplant 5 лет назад
But I'm still INCREDIBLY terrified of labor and delivery. I'm more so scared of things like tears, complications, side effects of the epidural if I decide to get one, etc. than the pain itself, but I'm still pretty scared of the pain too. I had a miscarriage at 13 weeks and had to take Cytotec because my body wasn't getting my baby out on its own and my doctors were concerned about infection, so that made the cramps (which are similar to contractions in that they come on really bad and then stop and then come back then stop, and it's in a pattern just like contractions) SO much worse than they already would have been. So having been through that, I'm very afraid labor is going to hurt even worse than that did, and that hurt REEEEALLY bad.
