Breathtaking Abandoned Oil Tycoons Summer Mansion Left Forgotten in the Mountains

This incredible historic old mansion was built in the early 1900’s during the gilded age for a wealthy family. They made most of there wealth from oil in the late 1800’s-1900’s and was able to build this large summer home as a getaway from the city. The mansion would remain in that family for only a short time as the Great Depression hit and the house was repossessed by the bank in the late 1930’s. It would sit vacant for years until a couple bought it in the 1960’s and restored the house with plans of making it a fancy bed and breakfast. Which lasted until the late 1990’s until declining business forced the doors too close for good. Sadly it’s now sat vacant for decades and is in pretty rough shape in some spots with large holes in the old asphalt shingle roofing. Really heartbreaking as there is so much gorgeous architecture and hand carved woodwork in this house no doubt made by master craftsman. So many incredible details in this place from the grand staircase, or the beautiful fireplace mantles throughout the house. Also the wooden floors in this house had some of the most stunning designs I’d ever seen. This place is absolutely incredible and deserves to be saved. So glad to have documented this historic old place in pictures and video so it’s not forgotten. Thank you for watching

That house has all the earmarks of being a rental home later in life. It's too disheveled and disrespected by former renters to think it was simply abandoned or left that way by the family. The wood burning stove in the middle of the floor with plywood underneath is a dead giveaway to me.

Architect here, also do ID, consulting and historic preservationist. From an architectural standpoint, this house appears to in pretty good condition for a restoration/heritage project. The most expensive things to repair, restore, or replace(woodworking, staircases, cornicing, flooring, etc.) seem to be in pretty great shape. The parts of the house that I can see from the video that are falling apart are all relatively easy, and inexpensive to repair, in comparison to the cost of redoing the parts that seem to be in decent shape. Of course, the caveat here is that I am making these comments based on only what I can see in the video, meaning there could be a lot of problems that weren't shown. I do know quite a few valuable pieces caught my eye, but for the sake of posterity, and the hope that the house will be restored sooner than later, I wont go into detail here about which pieces they were or their exact value. I would say that the section of the home where the clawfoot tub and marble sink were may have been an addition to add plumbing to the house, which may not have initially had it. Instead of tearing up the existing house, it was quite common for people to just add on to homes with new rooms that were built with plumbing. The other thing that I believe, if there are other bathrooms and kitchens in the house that aren't part of the section that is stepped down, and it was more than just added plumbing, I'd make an educated guess that the portion of the house was likely where the help stayed. whoever owned this home had staff consisting of two different groups of people that worked together when the family visited in summers, or allowed other wealthy families to visit when they weren't there, sorta like an old school vrbo/AirBnB amongst the wealthy. Some of the staff lived in the house full time, and likely were able to live in just a small portion of the house just for them. They were there to maintain the home, and it's grounds, so it would be in perfect condition when the owners came for the summer. The other help I mentioned came with the family during summer, were probably the maid, houseman/butler and cook, as well as an assistant to the owner, there to handle his business dealings, and relay messages between the businesses the families owned, and those they left in charge to run them in their absence. Depending on the home's location, I know a few organizations that might be willing to restore this house, whole or in part with funds from the national trust for historic preservation. I'd gladly send it along to the right people if I knew where this home is located, as well as the name of family/businessman that built the home. I really enjoy your videos, and the fact that you do your best to leave no trace when possible.

There was one on the hall wall, the exquisite inlaid one on the main floor, the inlaid one on the deck…. And that first bedroom you saw on the third floor gave me a total 1970s flashback! @Jackielocks
@Jackielocks 11 месяцев назад
It may have had something to do with their oil company or it’s logo, or perhaps the family name? Stars have been symbolic of so many different things to people over the centuries. Many old houses have stars on them. The meanings can be as individual as the person who put them there. The way I understand it is when the star is used in practicing magic, the white magic “Pentacle” will have the middle point up and the two “legs or horns” pointing down. Dark magic will point the two points of the star up, like horns and the star becomes a Pentagram.

Please someone help this old home and bring it back to its glory before its too late!!! Thank you Kappy for letting us come with you during this tour, I am so sad to see these abandoned places like this one just go to waste, I truly do not understand why people trash these places with so much junk scattered around, does not make any sense at all, and it shows the mentality of some who have no sympathy or cares about their home or someones property.

breathtaking in the glory she still manages to hold. That woodwork just expands the magnificence of what is old craftsmanship -you don't walk into new houses today and encounter such skills. Not just paneling and sculpted walls, but such bright rooms and on all three floors?!! No expense spared! Those books reflect a higher education. Tolstoy isn't for the light-hearted reader, but then immersed in such a beautiful natural setting, one is restricted only by one's own personal inertia. As a B&B, this would have had much to offer. Yet another story of tragedy, dictated by politics (as is everything in America, whether you choose to educate yourself or do politics or not). American fortunes are manipulated to come and go. Woe, but if we could have an educated populace again: there is no cure for today's programming. Pray as the cycle plays out again. Nice visit, Kappy. lovely relic.

I feel that way too, I’m guessing the entrance might not have been accessible. Kappy , just a suggestion, perhaps consider maybe a “walk around” of the entirety of the outside of the house first, would help us be more orientated / to follow the interior lay-out. Of course I suppose in some cases, accessibility might make that difficult as well. This place was one of my favorites hes posted. At the end, I wondered if the one story building looking attached to the house was a summer kitchen.

That wooden fireplace mantels at 7:20 and 8:36 are worth some money. Too bad they're just left to rot :( . When we were building our house, I was looking for something like them and never did find anything, especially that nice. In the end, we had a contractor build one. The wood paneling is gorgeous. This house is definitely worth restoring.

It's really sad to see such beautiful woodwork and craftsmanship just being subject to the elements like that. I wish it were possible to save these things somehow.

This gorgeous house looks like it was repurposed as a funeral home at one time? The front rooms with the piano plus the attic filled with chairs gives me that impression. Such a beautiful place!!

Amazing home. I always love how you look past all of the debris like its not even there and focus on the actual structure, beautiful fire places & mantels, pieces of furniture etc. What a stunning home with so many pieces that could be saved and the woodwork, so sad it might someday just be torn down.

Hi Kappy, my post will have to be short and sweet this time, as my husband is restless tonight and needful of almost all of my attention. After watching the video a few times, I have come to the conclusion that the lower areas of the house, as well as the living room, baths and kitchen on the first floor, are a whole other house than the larger, more elegant house built against or even attached to it. I really think that lower house is much older, which would account for its sad condition. The upper house was built beside it and perhaps it was used as a guest house, though the complete openness of its bathroom would have to mean that those guests were REALLY friendly with the occupants of the upper house! There was no expense spared on the upper house. Its interior shows high Victorian design at every turn, with lavish decoration just because they could afford it. The woodwork is splendidly extravagant, most notably the parquet installed in the house's floors and walls. Little wonder the owners attempted to prolong the life of the wood-paneled ceiling in that room off the living room. They didn't try to cover it up, Kappy. They were trying to keep it from falling down! I can easily see myself living in this house, after careful removal of the more decrepit lower house, of course. My favorite place in the house is the master bedroom, that beautiful green haven in the trees. Such a peaceful place could soothe the most weary soul and ease any suffering. I could be happy there. The main floor's spacious living area with its console piano and beautiful fireplace would be a wonderful, light-filled space in which to entertain guests and to spend restful hours before the fire. I can imagine my kitties basking in the fire's glow while I relaxed on a comfy sofa with my crochet or a good book. The next room with its own lovely fireplace would become a splendid library, filled with antique books and deep, comfortable chairs placed not too close to the fire. I laughed when you remarked about the number of books which are strewn about in the house. I, too, own hundreds of books, having read the vast majority of them, some more than once. One, the most wonderful Book of all, I have read nearly twenty times. It is my very favorite book and it had taught me many wonderful truths in my life. As it is obvious that all the bathrooms and the kitchen/dining room are quite firmly attached to and possibly providing support to the lower house, it will become necessary to build a newer, more sound addition to the house, but that problem is not insurmountable in nature, I'm sure. Now, all I have to do is win the next big lottery... Thanks, Kappy, for a great explore and a beautiful house. I guess you could call this one "The Tale of Two Houses!" Much love to all from Tennessee!

Wow! What a great house. The woodwork is amazing, I hope that some effort will be made to repurpose it when the time comes. Enormous structure, must have been an expensive build even in the 1930s. Thanks, Kappy

An intellect must have lived there. Weirdest place in a while Kappy. The beds all made up was a little creepy to me. Never thought you’d venture down those stairs but I see why, cool deck. Very strange place indeed.

Oh boy! What a gorgeous home! Someone could easily pull down that one side that seems to be rotten and it looks like easily renovate the other side with all of that incredible woodwork! What an amazing home that could be!! That level of workmanship will never be seen again, ever. If that house isn’t saved, I do hope someone saves what they can of the woodwork. To lose all of that would be a tragedy. Thanks for another visit to a forgotten treasure Kappy ♥️

What a great house! It seems to be in quite good shape. Such unusual woodwork all over the place. I hope the books find their way to an ebay seller or a used book store. How about that giant blue upholstered divan @ at 6:50, looks like it's at least eight or nine feet long. Honestly, of the many interesting houses you show us, this is one of the standouts. I really hope someone does something with the house and, if not, then at least salvage everything in it.

What a beautiful home! So grand & elegant back in the day! I would love to see someone restore it. (If only I were rich and about 30 years younger!) The clown fabric was kinda creepy. LOL I'd almost be willing to bet that the finial on the main newel post would come off to reveal the blueprints of the home inside it. I love the outro!

Who just abandons such an amazing house. The wood work alone must be worth thousands. A house like this could not be built in this day and age. Just the walls alone and the antiques. Makes you wonder what happened to the people?

Feels like someone is there. The cleared off sofa, no dust on some books. The odd ladder placement. Be cautious, someone could be sleeping up in the attic or the clean looking bedroom.
