In January 2015 the New Zealand Military Vehicles Collectors Club attempted to beat the world record for the biggest number of Bren Gun/Light Machine Gun carriers in one place at one time all able to travel a set distance under their own motive power. The previous record of 17 carriers (set in Australia) was well and truly smashed when 27 New Zealand carriers completed the set distance course (from the 29 that started).

I think the Desert Rats might have had a few more than 27. Great show guys, excellent viewing, and congratulations on keeping them running.

I think you will find the record was set in the first half of the 40s and rather higher than that.

Brilliant! My great grandad used to drive one of these in the war, great to see so many in action! Congrats to all involved, thank you for keeping them going :)

It's great to hear the sounds too. Like a bunch of hot rod cars. Interesting how the tracks don't squeak.

Late reply but the running wheels on the bottom are covered with rubber. Most of these tankettes are well maintained and probably used custom or refurbished tracks.

Powered by the same Ford flathead V8 as used in the early hotrods, and traditional builds today.

Are these related to the Bob Semple tank?
@historicalmachines
@historicalmachines 3 года назад
No, not at all. The Semple Tank was a distinctly New Zealand design, whereas these Universal and Bren Carriers were UK designs from the 1930s.

Australia built 5,000 of these during WW2 - just curious - were they also built in NZ and if so how many? -- How many of the carriers used in the record were Australian built?
@historicalmachines
@historicalmachines 8 лет назад
Yes, many were built in NZ. Not sure of how many, but it was quite a few.

They had PIAT, and those destroyed more tanks in Normandy than wittman's propaganda score.

@@2adamast the piat was a rather weak highly in accurate anti tank gernade
@2adamast
@2adamast 3 года назад
@@colingodin1477 Weak = 100 mm, that's everything on the flanks of a Tiger. But there was indeed only a 40% chance to hit a moving target at 100 m, so the Tiger had a fair chance to run away. The PIAT was only replaced in the fifties.
