Bruce Cameron, a member of the New Zealand Military Vehicle Club talks about his Thornycroft-built Bren Gun Carrier during the Wings Over Wairarapa airshow held at Hood Aerodrome, Masterton, New Zealand.
In 1939 this was one of six similar carriers which were brought to New Zealand to become the nucleus of the New Zealand Army's armoured vehicle force.

I actually had a bren carrier in 1980 that came from Ross on the Westcoast. It had no engine or trans in it. Can not remember who I sold it to though.

Good On You Bruce Cameron, you (and your brother) have made a strenuous effort to preserve an important part of NZ armoured history. Please put it on a webpage with loads of photos (before & after restoration), along with any useful technical details. Maybe you already have done so; it will help keep the record straight for future generations. If so, please put a link in the Description Section (above), many thanks.

Well done for you Bruce, you had the foresight and enthusiasm to save this vehicle when it was not worth money, you bought it and restored it because you liked it, and that is the very best of reasons, unfortunately value seems to be the only thing that drives people to do things now days. Well Done You!

HMH- the MH component of this registration was Middlesex- later north eat London after Middlesex lost its administrative status in 1965. Perhaps, it was to do with Enfield where the Bren gun was perfected?

As 'goofy' as this may sound, IMO one of those would make a great personal off-road vehicle. It's tracked, but not as LARGE as an APC or something similar....

Wish I had that chassis so I could put my old Volkswagen Bug body on!

Great to see a pre “universal carrier” carrier. Does anyone have somewhere that has details of the earlier versions? My Google fu has been weak in this area. As far as I am aware there was a Bren carrier, a scout carrier, a cavalry carrier and I think a machine gun carrier, but what the differences were seems hard to find.

This one doesn't seem to have much carrying space in the back.

There were also Lewis gun carriers with mountings for a Lewis machine gun. I restored one for a chap I worked for in Northland over 40 years ago ,which still had all of it's amour ,unlike his other one which was basically just the lower half, having been cut down and used as a tractor.

NZ was producing 5 of these per day, during the war, funny how they never teach that at school, might give us the idea NZ can be great again.

Why would they teach that obscure fact at school? It's not actually all that impressive, and while it was good war production, there are lots of other things that NZ'ers have done to be proud about.

@@historicalmachines that "obscure fact" is probably the second most impressive production achievement by NZ, after the run of Torpedo boats we built for the US South Pacific Fleet, yes it doesnt sound much compared to other nations, but the vacuum of knowledge being generated by our woke trendy lefty educators is doing serious damage to the heart & soul of NZ

Ah, the British analogue to the Jeep. Lovely vehicle. If only the Jerries had done the simple thing. . .
@andrewclayton4181

They had a similar thing, with a motor bike steering at the front, track drive at the back. Called the Kardikan or something like that.

@@andrewclayton4181 The Sdkfz 2 kettenkrad. The name means 'tracked drive'. And it wasn't. The Kubelwagen came close, but the Schwimmwagen had all-wheel drive and could go anywhere. They only built 8,756 kettenkrads. They were expensive to build and needed a whopping 124 lubrication points! Compare 53,000 Kubels and 14,500 Schwimmwagens. . .and 653,000 Jeeps.
