I like how Brent just accepts it how it is. No matter the circumstance, you have to pull the W. That’s the most important thing at the end of the day. This is why I love Brent.

These conversations with those that were cut early are awesome, especially with Brent who can think through what had happened in a logical, unemotional way. What he speaks about around the 19:00 mark of athletes saying they worked to hard to get cut, is a huge flaw in some of those top athletes mind-sets and I feel they were to comfortable with how the process had gone in the past, and to be honest as you mentioned to Brent him being a student of the game, I am not sure that some are students of the game. On the day the teams did that chipper workout on the North Park I thought for sure that the individual athletes would do some type of version of that also. Last note, the people like Mat, Tia, Mayhem they all come in with a very different mind-set, sure they want to win the "GOLD" but they all have a Michael Jordan like attitude about competing and that is win every event, every game. In CF we all know that isn't very possible but it for sure keeps them in positions to always be at the top seeking that "GOLD"; The seasons have changed as did everything about CF this past year, athletes, fans shouldn't be surprised at this point with how the games turned out, other than the majority knew who would be wearing the "GOLD" on Sunday.

He might be quite right, but nobody above 5'10" made the top ten on the men's side. The entire women's podium was 5'4" tall. So, he may be right, but I do believe that there was some bias in the programming that affected the final cuts.
@BernhardKohli
@BernhardKohli 5 лет назад
Castro logic = Mat and Tia are top. Stats logic: the new format could be selecting for low variance. Brent is a tall guy; he will by nature have more variance in CF than a within-the-size-norm guy. Doesn't mean he's not fit as a fiddle!

Being shorter is definitely an advantage in Crossfit because of the amount of gymnastic mobility, body weight lifts (Pull ups, Muscle ups, climbs etc) and floor to over head lifts. Generally speaking the taller you are the heavier you are, which makes all the movements I just listed harder. That's not to say there aren't events that suit taller competitors, swimming and rowing immediately come to mind, but the ratio is stacked against taller guys in Crossfit, the stats don't lie.

19th, 17th, 13th, 27th, 28th. Given 5 opportunities to do well and didn't execute on any of them where others did. I think coming 23rd isn't so bad given these placings.

I think Brent is extremely methodical and a planner. I think not knowing what to expect was harder for him. It was definitely hard to watch he just did not look like himself. But he wasn’t the only one. I think he did amazing can’t wait to see him next year!

Brent definitely has less holes in his fitness than some of the guys in the top 20. He also didn't get a chance to showcase his strengths either with the early competition programming. He didn't do poorly in any one event, but the programming probably allowed some of the top 20 to steal some points in their more "wheelhouse" type of workouts.

@@bandermed1898 the Games started with just under 150 athletes, after the first event that was "cut" to 75 athletes then the subsequent events cut the field further to 50, then 40, 30, 20 and finally until there were just the top 10 left.

The cuts were aggressive. But as a fan and viewer it made this year the most exciting to watch! Just gotta go back to work and do what you do and next year make dayum sure your not close to what could possibly be a cut!

The majority of the programming felt very basic. It really felt like Glassman had more control of it this year and was basically forcing the games to step back to fit his adjusted image/version of Crossfit. It would not have surprised me to see a row of couches and blue jugs on the floor for Sunday's final. Blue jug box/couch squats for time!

Brent is already a legend, so one low finish shouldn't effect sponsorships or relevance for him. The fringe top 20 guys who used to be relevant because of a few 15-30 place finishes at the games are really hurt by being cut early.

Great content, and first cut athlete with the right attitude on cuts. Try to win every event and be better. Amount of training does not equal success and in sport past success does not give you any rights, nothing is owed, only earned on the day.

As a guys who strategize a lot of his workouts and can walk away peacefully wherver this workout is a win or a loss, I empathize with and dig Brent "The Proffessor" Fikowski a lot. So yeah, see you next time, have during the off season/Open/training/whatever... And let's keep watching ArmenHammer TV for everything Fitness (From Dave Castro to Jillian Michaels to #sneakyfitness). Around 10:00 on this vid, you're mentioning Chaos, the workout. Right after day one of these 2019 CF Games, I made the following comment (And they used it on the French feed ;) #my15secondsoffame !): "These CF Games are like a 4 days version of Chaos" (With a lot people on the field not really knowing what to expect next)... And listening to Brent's take on Chaos and on the 2019 CF Games, I think this it: an event or a comp' one doesn't like to do but will learn to appreciate a lot as time goes by.

With a year of hindsight I think Castro had his hands tied by Glassman on wanting the cuts & how much they could fit in with so many athletes from the start, luckily this year no Glassman so hopefully the games can only get better from now on
@samuelbonacorsi2048
@samuelbonacorsi2048 5 лет назад
This year’s games were setup in a way that over emphasized small wins to generate big cuts. An elite athlete didn’t have to lose by much in an event to get cut in points. The sad thing is there was no broad comparison of endurance over the four days. If all events were weighted the same and more athletes remained on the field, then we would know who is truly the fittest on earth!

Sadly, as a fan, the main focus has not been on the competition but actually on the changes and the cuts.
@Kat-hi3vy
@Kat-hi3vy 5 лет назад
But how much of that is because the competition pretty much lost all of its juice after the last cut. The workouts with 10 had little drama to make them interesting outside of Mat and Noah. There was a little excitement when Newbury won the first of 2 workouts but that was it. Was there a lot of racing? Not really. People walked to the line which was just boring but that had no reason to race and I don't blame that on them.

Can a competitor with a larger "frame" like Brent (188 cm) make it to the podium in the CF-games in the future? I is to a high degree up to Castros design of coming Games. With lots of body weight related events during thew cuts... and only adding swimming, lifting, strongman, longer events after the cuts it will be close to impossible for a tall guy/girl to be in the top

I think the athletes went out and did the work they always do. It's one thing to have the event announcement right before the event. It's another thing to not know the rules. CrossFit is just like any other corporation on that they suck at communicating.

I feel like this year’s games was great for Dave Castro, and terrible for the fans and spectators. The programming wasn’t fun on the last day, and the best athletes got cut because of mostly running. Hoping for better next year.

I hear what Brent is saying here.. And I think he's a good enough athlete to make changes and get better... But as a "professional athlete" aren't the ppl that cover them supposed to be a little accountable for the things they say...like every single year since her rookie year games Sara Sig said she wasn't going to fill in the says she called before... Would you let Serena Williams slide with that for 5 straight years... Cuz shes really cool and pretty... Are you a fan or are you covering professional athletes? This goes for all CF media

I think some of these guys were used to being able to kind of feel things out the first couple of days, then really go for it the last 2 days. With the new format you have to go all out all the time. Those "All In" Documentaries are poison. Look what they did to Fikowski and Vellner. I hope Noah Ohlsen stays away from them.
@VirginiaGeorge
@VirginiaGeorge 5 лет назад
Jim Shew I think the difficult part about cutting so early though is it eliminates any chance of a “comeback story.” People in the top 20 were definitely competitors, and given this year’s format I don’t think Froning would have won a single Games in his individual career. So I see what they did and it’s fine, but it does eliminate the chances of some pretty intense athletes to come back and do something big on the last day or two.

Dan The Man oh you are most holy grammar nazi. You get the point. How about this, a year from now we see if I am right. If I am wrong I will be happy to buy and wear his jersey. It's getting to the point where you can't have an opinion anymore. I may not be right in the end but I am not wrong. Nothing insulting meant toward him, I just think that the competition out there is too great and the odds are against him. I stand by my comment and you are free to disagree. But there is no need to insult someone you don't even know just because you don't agree. I would hope you are better than that.
