Brian went through too many losses - the death of his father in 1987, the divorce in 1988, the death of Freddie in 1991. All of this brought him to the brink of depression and suicide. BIJOU is worth a listen. Brian's "Red Special" cries heartbreakingly... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9P9e-y16qHE.html
That is why I was instantly a lifetime loyalist from the very first time I heard Killer Queen/ Flick of the Wrist way back late 74 , Queen are my religion .
Written by Brian when he was torn between his wife at the time and Anita Dobson, whom he subsequently married. There's also a version by Queen, which Freddie sings with his usual passion. But Brian's pain and guilt really comes through in his version; difficult to choose between the two...
And to think Brian came SO CLOSE to committing suicide over the stress he went thru... cannot imagine a world without Brian May and his outstanding music... thank God for Anita (his second and current wife) who also saved his life when she helped him during his heart attack in the garden... Please do more Brian, "Holy Man" or "Last Horizon" or "Resurrection", all are wonderful... blessings.
@@Roryreacts Here’s a link to when Brian talks a bit about it. It starts at about 40 seconds. He also spoke more in a documentary but I can’t remember which one. I’ll try to find it and post it on here. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZcvRyh8RiAY.html
@@Roryreacts It's true. Brian went through many losses - the death of his father in 1987, the divorce in 1988, the death of Freddie in 1991. It was all too much for Brian and he fell into depression. When Brian originally wrote this song, Freddie said he loved it and wanted to sing it. Brian agreed figuring Freddie could give it more justice., which Freddie did. Brian sounded good, but Freddie singing it is perfection, as expected
When you get the chance you should check out the Star Fleet Project. It was a collaborative Lp Brian worked on with some other artists including Van Halen. There’s some great guitar work on it. Thanks for the reaction 👍
Brian has commented on interviews that context of the song is very different when Freddie sings it, and he's correct. I like both, but I prefer Brian's version.
I prefer Brian’s version to the Queen one his marriage was falling apart his Dad had just passed away & there was Freddie’s illness you can see it all in his face such an emotional song 😢 would love you react to Freddie’s the Great Pretender the extended version x
I absolutely love this song though it is so sad because you can truly feel his pain of his indecision and poor choices. Having to choose between his family and someone he was having an affair with, while his wife was pregnant with his third child, is a difficult place to be and Brian, more than anything else, is a father and family man and always wanted to be a father. The thought of not being there when his kids woke up in the morning was ripping him to shreds and at the time he was quite suicidal. Brian has said that the only thing stopping him from driving off a bridge was the mess it would have left for his children. Ultimately his wife made the decision for him when she left him and took his kids to their home in California to get some air to breathe so she could make the necessary break. They had been trying to work things out for 3 years but Brian continued with his infidelity so the answer was clear. The story is so very sad because Brian and Chrissie really loved each other but his infidelity was not something she could live with and she did not want her kids growing up thinking this was a decent way to act or what a marriage should be. Brian had been cheating on his wife while he was on the road, long before he met Anita (current wife) but for Chrissie, Anita was the last straw. Brian has never gotten over this breakup and still carries a lot of guilt over it. There is a constant sadness that he seems to have over losing the man he was before he gave into the temptation of comfort while on the road. Living a lonely life and being away from his family all but a couple of months a year and even then, spending most of his time in the studio had taken its toll along with everything else that comes with that kind of success. Brian was a happy fun-loving guy before he got himself into this situation and now, he still says he suffers with depression and anxiety, saying that his is not a "very jolly guy at all, " and looking into his eyes, even today, the sadness lives there. This song is his life story in a nutshell and a testament to how one fatal mistake can shape the rest of your life. My favorite lines in this song are: "I feel like no one ever told the truth to me, about growing up and what a struggle it would be. In my tangled state of mind, I've been looking back to find where I went wrong." I think these lines ring true for all of us. Thank you for reacting to the outstanding song.
Thanks, Rory! this is very personal to Brian - and he did nail those notes... I still keep hoping you will react to his "Another World" video - the song is from early 90's I think, but the video is relatively new... from his visit to Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain observatory .. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rJI_CkHJ9Z0.html (he also recorded a video of '39 while there..).
This is an outstanding performance by Brian. However, I prefer Freddie's version because, well, Freddie's voice and his ability to inhabit a song and give it exactly what it should have. I agree that the songwriting is perfect. This might be my favorite Queen song.
Also worth checking out by Brian is the Starfleet Project. Brian and Eddie Van Halen together, an absolute joy. Then of course you should look at some solo stuff of Roger's too.
Queen recorded a version of this with Freddie singing lead but since Brian wrote the song with a couple other people there were copyright issues with the original release. Queen eventually released that version after Freddie had died. You should also react to Brian's re-release of Back To The Light.
This is such a heartbreaking song, Rory and your reaction was spot on. Here is another of Brian's songs you will recognize. This version of Tie Your Mother Down was recorded live in 1993 (I think) by The Brian May Band on MTV unplugged and was one of the songs he played and sang with an American accent which included a prologue of sorts. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Oduv9nHyUuY.html And here is another track that's pretty special. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qkfNJ52eMG8.html
