Absolutely nothing too do with Fred it was written by and about Dr Brian May, his marriage which was falling apart, and a new person on the scene who he married, I think his dad might have passed away around the same time, can't remember offhand, but this is part of Brian solo career which was running alongside Queen, he, Fred and Roger released albums which were all part of the solo projects, John didn't he worked behind the scenes with other people, but the group never broke up,they just needed to do other things as from 1970 and 71 when John joined they'd been releasing records, touring the UK and then rest of the world and repeat until the early 80's which I think what took a strain on Brian marriage, don't think that every song is about Freddie, the four of them would write very different songs for Queen or solo careers, Fred in his own words was just the lead singer and his job was to make every song sound as whoever wrote it wanted
Brian singing about his own pain filled life. Breaks my heart every time I hear him. 😢💔 Gut wrenching beautiful song. Impossible not to cry watching him.
This is my favorite version of this song though I also find it to be heartbreaking. Thank you for revisiting this song and doing Brian's personal expression of it. This is not about Freddie though the first time this song was ever done for the ears of the public was when Brian performed it on piano at The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert so it really did make people think that it may have been about Freddie. In fact, it is about Brian's life and how terribly depressing his situation was at the time. Part of what was making it so sad was that Freddie was dying which meant his band was also dying and on top of that, his marriage was failing due to his own actions and the thought of living separately from his wife and his children was a sadness greater than he felt he could bear particularly while losing his own father at the same time and his wife being pregnant with his third child, while he was having an affair with another woman who he also had fallen in love with. Talk about a life crumbling down around you, Brian's certainly was.
This song just kills me. You can feel Brian's pain. He was going thru alot at this time. Losing his Dad, ending his marriage and the guilt of hurting his children and his first wife. and Freddie's death, not knowing what was going to happen to Queen. Brian became suicidal. He luckily got help and came thru.
Brian's version is quite better IMO. It was a big hit in Europe, reaching #1 in some countries. This is probably Brian's biggest hit song outside of Queen. The entire Back To The Light album is lovely
Brian’s perfect song, so to speak!! Brian wrote it as a result of finding himself between a rock & a hard place! It was supposed to be on Brian’s solo album Back To The Light but when he heard Freddie sing it .. it added another meaning. Therefore, we have Brian’s version & Queen’s version! 😭💦 DRIVEN BY YOU by Brian May!!
No, Brian wasn't talking about Freddie. This was a turbulent time in Brian's life, his father had recently died, Freddie had been diagnosed as HIV positive, he had begun a relationship and was torn between his wife and family and his new love. The whole thing was taking a toll on his and he was going through a deep depression.
@DKT Brian's song for Freddie is 'Nothing but Blue'; this song Brian wrote about his love for his 1st wife (Chrissie) and their children vs his new love (Anita) during the time Brian was losing his father (to cancer) and Freddie Mercury to AIDS (consequently their band Queen). Brian's lifelong clinical depression during these circumstances led Brian May to a treatment center in the U.S after he contemplated suicide and considering driving over the Hammersmith Bridge. Mind you, the time line of these events vary, but Brian is truly in a seriously grave state of mind for *several* years. DKT--in this video, you are watching pure emotions. Thank you soo much
he didn't know Freddie was ill when he wrote this it was when Freddie was doing his album with Montsarat his Dad passed 91 I don't know how long he had been ill
@@bluebell3720 Yes, the timeline of TMLWKY is rather convoluted. I also think of Brian's single 'Back to the Light' and that entire album is full emotions! Here are 2 links rom Brian's storytelling series. The first is about TMLWKY and the second is BTTL: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-v7nlN7wHEE8.html and ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_z4YHC7htq0.html Enjoy :-) Why not include 'Resurrection'? ;-) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eL30xIWn_zA.html @DKT @SherryHeim
Brian wrote this song when his marriage was breaking up. He fell in love with an actress who he is still married to and its about his strugle to come to terms with the state of his marriage and his new love. He was torn. Its very emotional and its raw and real.
