This is actually a very relaxing video! My dearly departed dad was a brickmason who I had the Honor of working with him when I was in high school and college. This brings back such great memories of him. He was a great man. I learned a lot from him. Glad I found this!

This needs to be done to one of mums windows, it lets in water at the top. The house was build with no lintels, the bricks were supported by the wooden window frames, you can imagine what happened when 9ft windows were removed to be replaced with UPVC! Over time she has had lintels put in but they don't put the damp membrane to direct any water out. Cheers, you have given me something to think about.

Very nice work!! Two questions I have is, the spacers that you put between every other brick is that for drainage and or for ventilation if moisture gets behind brick? Also could you use those spacers or other type in a older building that has a stone wall instead of brick? Thank you and keep up the great work.
@SteveAndAlexBuild
@SteveAndAlexBuild 5 лет назад
Dion Aramenko Hi Dion . They are called weep vents and are there to drain any water that comes down the cavity tray onto the lintel . They comes in many sizes and colours and even clear . If the old stone work has cavity trays in it then yes you can use the vents . Thanks for watching and commenting and glad you like the videos 🧱👍🏼

Super job and very informative. I need to get this done on 5 openings and I'm trying to learn what's involved, thanks for sharing. While I'm here can I ask, what should the approximate cost of a job like this be today, (per lintel)?

Great video, thanks so much. When the lintels have torqued the brick and caused it to bulge, what will happen when the lintel is replaced? Is more brick work required to fix the torquing and bulging?
@SteveAndAlexBuild
@SteveAndAlexBuild 6 лет назад
Aaron Fish . Generally ,the brickwork takes years to move so once it’s propped and the new lintel is fitted then we re point any cracks . Once brickwork has moved it’s almost impossible for it to be moved back . In extreme cases the whole pike may need re building but I’ve never had a job that bad so far . Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏼
@aaronfish2691
@aaronfish2691 6 лет назад
Bricklaying With Steve and Alex I had a home inspection recently and the inspection reported that there were cracks with lateral displacement, and outward lean in the wall. I had. Foundation contractor look at it and he said that it was a result of deferred lintel maintenance. The cracks can be corrected by pointing when the lintels are replaced but how do you correct the outward lean?
@SteveAndAlexBuild
@SteveAndAlexBuild 6 лет назад
Aaron Fish . I think if it’s really bad it’s probably better to drop and re build the outside skin .
@passkat
@passkat 5 лет назад
Great work guys but how did you know the lintel needed replacing though? Where there rust showing around the brick work?
@SteveAndAlexBuild
@SteveAndAlexBuild 5 лет назад
passkat . If the rust is really bad the rust stains the windows below ( we have other lintel videos where you can see this ) There is generally a crack at either side where the lintel is because the rust expands and lifts the brickwork above, if not rectified the rust just keeps going and lifting, it’s quite scary how powerful rust is . Once it has started there is no way to stop it , the lintel must be replaced 🧱👍🏼
@garyharris184
@garyharris184 6 лет назад
Whats the point in the tray it is suposed to come right to the front of the lintel under the brickwork with the ends turned up into the last weepholes those weepholes wont work set up that way on the plus side neat brickwork and for those that dont know they used acro props with the addition of strong boys attatched

@SteveAndAlexBuild
@SteveAndAlexBuild 6 лет назад
Neil U.K. Hi Neil . No I never pack with slate , the reason being it just pushes down onto the new lintel and bends it , even though I always pack it off the existing door or window . I make sure the top bed is full then I take the acrows out straight away so the wall above settles onto the new mortar , hope that makes sense ? We have done 4 big lintels on another house so should be uploading those vids soon. Thanks for watching and commenting pal 👍🏼

Because the lintel is only galvanized any scraps or scratches on it (highly likely) will make it susceptible to damp (rust) where as the dpc will stay water tight for years especially when its as well nailed and silicone as that one was.

Great job lads. Can I pick your brains. I have a concrete lintle that's to change that's being swapped for a limestone one. It's 2.8 metres long. Is there a regulation where this has to be supported by an l lintle or something like. Can't get a definite answer of anyone
@SteveAndAlexBuild
@SteveAndAlexBuild 6 лет назад
Martin Craggs . Thanks mate . As for your lintel I can only really comment on what I have seen on site . A lot of new builds use imitation decorative stone lintels which are always put on top of steel lintels . 2.8 is quite a big span . If your lintel is natural stone could have small invisible cracks so I myself would support it to be on the safe side . To 100% certain you need to ask a structure engineer but they are NOT cheap ! Good luck with your project and thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏼

Bricklaying With Steve and Alex Cheers Pal. Think I'll just put one in for piece of mind. The lintles that are being replaced are what looks like 600mm concrete poured ones as in shuttered on the wall. 12 headers and sills to do. Ball ache of a job if they are the thickness of the wall. Won't know until I open up.

@SteveAndAlexBuild

Jim Bob . The cavity tray is built into or in this case attached to the inside wall then it slopes down and over the lintel. It’s purpose is if any water gets into the cavity , the tray catches it and the water run to the front of the lintel and out of the weep vents . Hope that makes sense . Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏼
@Thearewatchingyou
@Thearewatchingyou 5 лет назад
Thanks for that! It clicked. I presume it prevents moisture from getting to the new lintel and corroding it. My guess is my 90+ year old house does not have these drip trays and weep vents!. Good to see a tradesman that takes pride in his work! That's a rarity. Thanks again

How much would this cost I remember talking to you last year about rain coming through my living room window and a company called Mears was ment to fixed the dam problem well we thought they had fixed it this time round nope they rebodge it back up now I cant go through council has I bought the house just after it had been done well thinking that they had fixed it so now I'm looking into getting it fixed once and for all been told they may not be a lintel or damp cause so wondering how much should I be looking at to get the job done I know all builders have there own prices. I've tried brick and mortar sealant but it just makes it way through is there any other ways I can prevent it from getting through while I can get the money to get it done thanks for any advice you can give me

Wayne Britton without seeing the job in person it would be impossible to guess what’s actually causing the problems . Is it worth contacting the council to tell them a repair they have arranged has failed less than 12 months after it was done surely they should be liable for repairing the cock up ?
@waynebritton6711
@waynebritton6711 4 года назад
I've been in touch with them they sed as I bought the house it's no longer there problem with them they sed I should have checked it before hand as I did with a jet washer a week later no problems up to 3weeks ago with the first storm we had with the heavy rain. This is about as much as I can tell you all I know is the bricks above my living room window are bowed out not flush like the rest of the windows the pointing were the bricks are pointing is on a angle not like it should be theres no wep holes if that's the right name for it them plastic things you put in between the bricks. I was told the lintel had dropped a few years ago by the council but should had been fixed last year but never was just bodged up to make it lasts. If you have a email address I could send you the pictures of what gone on and the damage it has caused

Wayne Britton Friggin useless councils ! Might be worth going to citizens advice about it . It sound like the lintel is gone or there never was one plus if there is a cavity tray inside that’s gone too . Your probably looking in the region of £300 to £400 to renew everything . It’s a days work for a competent tradesman . Ask around in builders merchants if they can recommend a good bricky 🧱👍🏼

I head as a boy, ya need a cavity. As an adult I looked into it. Dad was right , again. I mentioned insulation in cavity wall. Defeats the cavity ne said. Interesting. I looked in to it in detail. I've never laid a block or brick. I did carry them. No Hod carry! My father had me labor as a young kid on plasters , brick layers, and carpenters. Framing here. Fast paced Chicago heat. And cold. Left school hung off high rises shuttering...got my arse back to school.
