This video looks at the history of Central America. It begins with the indigenous peoples of the isthmus, especially the Maya, looks at the Spanish colonization period, at their attempt at forging a federal republic in the 1820s and their ultimate failure and fragmentation. It then follows each one of the countries in brief, explains why Costa Rica has been the exception and why civil wars occurred in Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador.

great video, i’ve always loved how Central America is a Caribbean region with South American influence too, the 3 regions are so rich with culture that it’s great to see more people online pay attention to them

Great video man! I have family in Guatemala and a lot of people over look the rich history of Central America. From the Mayan/indigenous civilizations, colonial times, German migration to Guatemala, and modern times. Can’t speak for the other countries but i know Guatemala was like two countries in one. The indigenous and the non-indigenous. Family told me that this was rooted from the civil war and Guatemala’s silent apartheid.

Really good video and information but it’s painful! Between central and South America they could have a massive jail for all their past and present presidents. Plus Central America had to deal with other countries meddling in their business. Someone in Hollywood should make a series about it all.

Indeed they should

I learned more from this video than from living and travelling in Central America for over a decade! Unfortunately it's very sad, but history almost always is.

thank you for your comment. On the issue of its history, it very definitely is.

17:26 The PLN is the party that overthrew Calderón´s government in 1949, and has ruled Costa Rica (along with the PUSC party, in a 2 party state model) until 2014. Its decline, however, can be traced back to the 2010´s. Its many corruption scandals, lack of a clear ideologý/vision and general voter fatigue meant that the PLN party is only really popular with very specific sectors (government workers, businessmen and old people). The PAC party that dethroned it, however, died due to its shitty management of Covid, and now there is a very fragmented political situation in CR, with over 6 parties now sharing power in Congress. Thanks for listening to my Ted Talk.

Its a shame we couldn't stay united. Imagine how advanced we would be. Hopefully in the future it can become a reality again

If this was about pre-Columbian Central America, what area would be discussed? For example, how much of Mexico would be part of the scope?
2 года назад
Well, if we include the peoples that lived in what we now call Central America and Mexico, it would be mostly the Yucatan peninsula, Chiapas and Tabasco plus Central America.

Do you think it's possible for Central America to reunite again?
2 года назад
They've been trying for a while. And if Europe can do it, Central America can definitely do it. At least Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and El Salvador. But nationalisms are very high in this area so it would not be easy.
@benjaminpineda8626
@benjaminpineda8626 2 года назад
@ I'd say more than nationalism the biggest obstacle are special interests in each of those country's, if there is a reunification inevitably people will win and lose influence, and not no one in power is willing to get the poo end of that proverbial stick
2 года назад
@@benjaminpineda8626 that's true, and a very good point. That's what led to the separation in the first place. But I could imagine a situation where elite interests aligned (like in the EU) and people agreed to unite. In that case, nationalisms might be a problem.
@lucario2188
@lucario2188 2 года назад
@ Yeah, nationalisms is really high on Costa Rica. Some Costa Ricans even think, the unification is a ridiculos endeavor. In my opinion they lack ambition and are arrogant has heck.

I am currently in Guatemala and have visited Iximche. The people very much are still here.

I think this is a reply to this part of the video: "What is true, however, is that by the time the Spanish showed up in the 16th century, the Mayas no longer lived in their famous monumental cities, but rather in smaller places such as Kumarcaj and Iximché (this last city, btw, was also known by its Aztec name Cuauhtemallan, which was the basis for the name Guatemala)."
@FastFredTravels
@FastFredTravels Год назад
@ yes they had long abandoned the large cities. Iximche is rather small though a number of folks lived there at time of conquest. I meant to agree the Maya people are still in Southern Mexico and Guatemala in smaller towns.

Why did you skip our guy Carias Andino. He was probably amongst the most interesting since half the population considers him a national hero who brought stability and economic prosperity.

Incase you didn’t know, the reason why the pipil people(Of El Salvador) have a similar dialect to the Aztecs, is simply because they are descendants of the Aztecs(Mexico). The mother culture is known to be the Olmecs, hence making Mexico the mother country of Mesoamerica.

The Mayans are older than the Aztecs go back and learn some history, we eat Maíz because of the Mayans not the Aztecs
