Like someone else mentioned, I'm glad I didn't write you guys off at the beginning. That was a very in-depth 33 minutes worth watching including some nuances not mentioned in some other videos I've seen. I learned these engines are prone pushing valve guides out, bending push rods and worse if gotten too hot. You may have mentioned that in a previous video, not sure. But when you pulled the rods and they were straight I can see why you immediately when to the cam issue and you were correct. Experience! Well done.

The Dactyl saves the day again. I got one doing the exact same thing on an 04 Simplicity. I asked a few people, they had no clue, looked it up and sure enough it took me to my favorite lawn mower man, originally I thought it was a blown head gasket, now I know I need to start sourcing a cam. Thank you.

Another great video by Taryl! I like the videos of replacing internal parts and how to line things up and settings etc. It makes for a proud moment when it starts and runs like it's supposed to. I'm gonna look through more of your videos and see if you have anything about the older opposed twin Briggs engines. I have a 2001 model (that I got used last year). It's a 17hp I/C engine that I put on the back of our Snapper RER. Plenty of power when it runs right but I think it stopped pumping fuel a few days ago. I checked the fuel tank and it's not clogged up. I'm going to go through everything real good and give it a good checkover. Gonna check the valve clearance for one, it was popping before it stopped on me too...

Thanks for the video, I’ve noticed this problem with a lot of the snowblowers I fix. Most of them have the OHV Powermore or LCT engines. I clean or replace the carburetors and always bore out the low speed jet to prevent surging, however some of the machines pop and backfire and it drives me crazy. Valve adjustments never seem to fix the problem either. I don’t like to sell them in that condition. I’ve scoured the internet for a solution and this video is the closest thing I can find. Might have to rip the engine off of the next one that does it and see if the lobes on the cam shaft are worn down.

Taryl, I was a mechanic for about 50 years, and a drag racer for over 40 years. Just saying I a know a bit aboutr this kinda stuff.. Anyway What we used to do with seals (arf, arf, arf). Before we installed them we would pack the inside with grease, so when you tapped them in the spring DID NOT pop out. Never had a seal (arf, arf, arf, spring pop out.

I would love to see you do a video about recommend oils for different engines. I may be wrong, but I dont think people realize that these cams and tappets depend on zinc, but the oils you buy at parts stores usually have a lot less zinc because of catalytic converters.

@spelunkerd
@spelunkerd 2 года назад
An old time mechanic told me that as a short cut when adjusting valve lash, he would look for what he called 'valve rock' on any cylinder. Valve rock as he defined it was where the intake was opening and the the exhaust valve closing, so both rocker arms for that cylinder are moving in opposite directions. That only happens when near TDC for the exhaust stroke. If one cylinder is at TDC for exhaust, on a twin engine you know that the other cylinder is close enough to the compression stroke and that all valves are completely closed. That's easy to see on the camshaft view at 8:12. As you say, you don't need to be more accurate than that.

First, disconnect the plug wires. If the popping stops, it's ignition or crank key sheared. Check the compression. If low, go after that. A lean carburetor can cause popping in the intake or exhaust. If the rockers are very loose, it could be the valve seat. Replace the head.

Older cam is easy spin starting ,compressission is released by a machined bump on the cam lobe. Was a briggs patent. Never gave the problems of the mechanical compression release. Was used on the flatheads and early ohv engines, untill briggs went cheap!

If you adjust the governor like you described and still have a crazy high idle that doesn’t change with the throttle lever what could be the cause of that?

Taryl, I always put grease on the back of my seals and that keeps the spring from popping off!

So I am getting that popping noise from my Intek and the engine hunts at full throttle. I guess I need to check the valve movements. Since there is smoke coming out of the crank case (via oil tube) I assumed it was blow by due to my recent cylinder replacement (maybe I messed up installing the rings). Maybe... it's the cam shaft? Need to check that out. Already checked the head gaskets,,, they are fine.
