Liam Stapleton goes deep with Bring Me The Horizon's Oli Sykes and Jordan Fish, as they chat about how they've grown as a band, facing their critics, where they get their inspiration from and trying to stay healthy.
Yes! I didn't like it at first. I saw them live in Brisbane, they played Nihilist Blues and ever since I've been hooked. I've been a fan since Suicide Season and it's nice to change it up!
Same here! Saw them at warped tour back in like 2009? 2008? Can’t remember, but I would say they can adapt well into new their music. People throwing shade at Jordan tho idk why >.>
It’s amazing to see olis change within interviews... it used to be so sad when he was constantly scratching and poking himself cause of the drugs but now he’s so well spoken and intelligent! So happy how much he’s changed! Bring me the horizon thank you for being one of the best bands ever!
While I see what you mean I’m not entirely sure. Since he had substance use disorder with ketamine (which is a dissociative) .. was his fidgeting a result of that drug, or was it just his anxiety and AD/HD? With a dissociative class drug you’re G-O-N-E so he’d likely do it in private, although some drugs DO have a lasting impact even when the user isn’t high, they’ve come down, yet in their day to day it’s been a long standing use disorder (speed, pain killers, and alcohol are all good examples). In other words, there are plenty of drugs where -even if you aren’t high at the moment- it affects your behavior in between using. While I can’t say I’m well versed in what someone regularly using ketamine is like when they’re down from it? Because it’s a dissociative it likely wouldn’t result in fidgeting and scratching. Also, I’m not super well educated in my SEVERE chronic/generalized anxiety yet (haven’t gotten in to therapy yet, we’re still figuring out a medication stack, and for 10+ years I thought I was, ‘stressed,’ until my new partner -we’d always been very, very good friends for 16+ years- clued me in. She’s been doing therapy, routine + medication for a long time) though I do know some functions of what behaviors manifest from a few types of anxiety. Although, on the other hand, I am well versed in my AD/HD as I was diagnosed young. Just from those two mental health struggles I’m always squirming, fidgeting, scratching at my self (it’s apparently some sort of nervous, self soothing thing despite how psychotic it sounds). It could totally be that he was doing that in the past due to that drug, but I’m skeptical due to the class of drug, and it is at least plausible it’s simply situational or social anxiety and AD/HD.
@@TheSubzero1991 "I have cut down on my medications - I'm trying harder. If I'm off it for just a day it's like the old me times a million, like I'm just stupid." (2015)
y’know, Oli has such a great artistry, and I respect him so much for it. no matter how their sound changes... you will know it’s his work. his versatility is grand I love this man so much
I love how they always come up with different sounds. Everything is okay as long as they still play instruments and don’t become something like Panic at the disco (that there’s only one member left in the band)
Miguel Angel yeah, I know (just fyi, I like Panic at the disco, no hate) but what I was trying to say is the fact that I don’t want BMTH to be a solo artist because all the band members are gone.
I don't think I would have a problem with most directions they take. The thing about being critical of art is it's just too tiring. Music isn't a contest of who can play instruments the best or whatever. I think as long as you're making something unique that you love and enjoy, other people are gonna resonate with that. FYI, being a producer and making music with computers can take just as much practice and knowledge to master as playing an instrument, and I play 3 instruments, and I'm mediocre as hell with a DAW. If you don't believe making a hip hop beat, or a rave song is difficult, you do it. You might be able to figure out a little bit, but mastery takes time.
7:16 something like that happened to me, it's incredible how many styles they can manage without losing bmth essence, all their work is amazing and it shows how good can be a band if they change and not try to stay the same through the years.
ive only gone to one bmth show and i've been a fan since cyb.. there was this giant dude in the crowd sending people out to crowdsurf so of course I had to. I had both thumbs up and my gf got on video the whole thing. I looked back at it and one of the guitarists had his thumbs up right back at me. If i die from coronavirus tomorrow I will have lived a full life
Good interview, I'd love to see them just drop a deathcore or metalcore track in the middle of their next album, amongst whatever else they made, just to further flex that experimentation. Imagine literally going from a song like Medicine to something much much heavier.
"gateway band" is a funny idea when you as a listener went softer as time passed, and for my sake they might as well continue until it doesn't get more pop, i'm loving it.
I started listening to them when count your blessings came out and I admit after suicide season I was doubtful, but then sempiternal came out and I rejoiced. Then came That's the Spirit, and it completely blew my mind. to this day I consider Drown one of my all time favorite tracks because it just resonates with me. Amo is no stranger either. it grew on me, and now it has been on repeat since release. totally love it.
I'm the opposite. Started listening to them during count your blessings, and basically hated every album after. It got worse and worse. I think the newest album is the worst of them all.
i appreciate that u too appreciate their evolution. their old records still exist, n we can listen anytime we want. ppl should be happy for BMTH, whether or not u prefer their old stuff etc. :)
I understand them wanting to try something new. Sadly, I didn't like it (aside from a few songs, but guess I'll move on to other bands). Rly happy I got to see them live before amo, That's The Spirit was definitely my cup of tea.
You know, the problem is,that, maybe it's only for me,but I think, that now this band just lost that power, that it had in 2010's - at that time (after release of There is A Hell) even the word Bring Me The Horizon felt different - when you bought ticket at that time you at least known, that you're gonna have a very unique time - setlist with both melodic songs, and amazing bangers. It just felt like complete insanity, and that was fucking amazing. Now it just become more.... regular? Seriously, I can't remember something similar to old BMTH - metalcore, that was actually heavy(maybe except Architects, but it was more on technical side, rather than groovy one). Their older material brought me emotions, that none other group did, they were unique - and now, they're changed theirs style. And, how simple that wasn't, but it's just sad, when the unique band changes their direction. Personally for me, the problem is that all that good stuff, that was back in heavy days simply left behind - I would've been more than happy,if half of the setlist were modern songs, and the other half was old ones.
Oli: "We've not turned our backs on what we used to do." I've never heard a more comforting phrase. I was getting worried. It makes me sad when bands detest their earlier songs that initially brought them success. Good interview!
I’ve gotten quite a few friends into rock music, because of AMO. Start them with the new BMTH, then they start digging into the old. The message with all their albums is still solid as ever.
Great to see a band like these guys develop and push the boundaries over the years. You can tell the legit bands see music from a more creative and broader musical sense than just picking a genre and sticking to it. Whether it hits the mainstream or not it's amazing to see such and honest and real band appeal to a wider audience.
Nihilist blues is the coolest thing I've heard in a long time, the album Amo as a whole didn't quite do it for me as much as I'd hoped but that song is magic
Bring Me The Horizon is one of the few bands I have experienced whose progressive aural transmutations have always resonated with me. Each new sound they unleash has always been, in my earnest opinion, Bring Me The Horizon. It never feels different. It just feels new, refreshed even. And I love it every time.
@@popegeorgelucasii933 What's ur problem?? I'm so fucking tired of the drug comments. He's clean so DROP IT ALREADY!!! And how tf do u know what this dude has heard.. Maybe he's even heard songs u haven't... Fuck dude..SMH
With us at the doorsteps of Post Human 2? This is an interview I’ve been coming back to, but coming back to this now in the wake of, “DiE4u,” “Lost,” and, “AmEN?” It’s amazing how far ahead they were with, “amo,” and, “~music to listen to…”, but then how the opportunity for, “Ludens,” + COVID altered their trajectory for the best.. Man this interview is even better with hindsight and perspective, you know?
I wish I would have heard of BMTH earlier in life as they were coming out with all their work... I'm not a deathcore or death metal fan though. The first song I remember hearing was "throne" so I came in late in the game. Not all of the music from BMTH is my favorite, but some of my favorite songs in general come from BMTH. My favorite sound was from Sempiternal and I like "chelsea smile" and some of the Suicide Season album. Amo.... I'm not sure about Amo yet, but just like i listened to all of "count your blessings" like holy shit I have to listen to Amo and feel it out too.... I love your sound from songs like "sleepwalking" "shadow moses" "chelsea smile"... The lyrics to "sleepwalking" speak to me and I love "hospital for souls" "don't go"... and "drown"... "slwepwalking" has become one of my favorite songs...
I will admit I was one of the persons that didn't like to much "Amo", but at this point I already download all the songs and liked it..... Oliver, your music helps me in my despair and sadness, hope to meet you one day :)
a lot of bands have changed , funeral for a friend , as cities burn , emery and so on i like the change i can listen to amo or count your blessings and enjoy them both i like that the band is growing and changing i cant wait to see where they go
I remember hearing Diamonds aren’t forever and I hated it, it was way too heavy for me. Got into sempiternal without even knowing it was the same band and going through their discography and loving it. BMTH is definitely the best gateway band imo
Too heavy for you? Damn boy you need to explore metal more. Once you lose your sensibility to guturals and heavy music you will enjoy metal a lot more. Dont let heavier stuff scare you. Just go and enjoy de ride.
@@Crustyfart123 My comment wasnt even "dark" It was friendly. Just like my nickname sounds dark or edgy but both my content and my actitute in daily life is friendly. Its my internet name so you can search me on steam, ps4 and switch like that or simply "KuromiDL'
@@revenga54 Yep. I dont play on ps4 that much I do it sometimes. I play more on my PC and my 3ds. My ps id "Kuromidarklord". Feel freed to add me. I love RPGs like Nier automata, Rouge Galaxy and shin megami tensei including persona and the mainlines.
Its like what Linkin Park Chester Bennington says. Music is a journey. Its always changing. Music don't had to be in the same way or had the same sound on every record. Bring me the Horizon have the Courage to go their own way.
You dont know real metal until you've shuffled some of BMTH. I always leaned towards metal but once I heard Shadow Moses when I was 14 and now im 20. I got addicted and still listen to all of their albums. I hated spirit at first but it grew on me, I think it's just accepting that they are going to try out new sounds over time. Pray for Plauges is the first screamo song I've ever heard a few days ago, I'm addicted now :) Keep doing you Oli, you got me through some tough times...thank you ❤️
I know they probs wont see this but their new album along with anyothers that theyve produced have helped me through hard times and are true music because their not all for the fan but for the themselves so theyre not unhappy with their production
What he says about no matter where you start you always go and get in to their other genres and that’s impressive. Each record is a separate genre and for a band to do that that’s advanced. I’ll admit the first song I knew I was listening to [bmth] was snakes start to sing. Fast forward a few years and I apologise if you feel something and pray for plagues are in my playlist. Some people may not like BMtH as they don’t like heavy or don’t like pop. But there’s an album for everyone
It s 6am I just learned my cat i grew up with is strongly sick and listening to bmth interviews is the only thing that help me calm down at this point...
When diamonds came out i loved it but that was over a decade ago and im not the same person i was back then and neither is bmth. I love growing with bands. I still love their hardcore stuff but with their newer sounds, i can respect it because they are incredibly talented and i can still tell its them. They still carry whatever it was when i first found them. Idk im glad theyve grown into what they are and arent afraid to step out of themselves and try something new and thats the mentality i try to keep when i listen to it.
the stuff they r saying here is so true, bmth got me into metalcore AND like post hard core “emo” stuff their versatility is amazing and unmatched honestly
BMTH is a band that i considered as versatile band... i loved that kind of band, and i dont felt boring when they turned into pop...its just a gentle part of BMTH 😉💖
He basically says "yeh I just call it one big (tattoo) one", "sometimes I wish I had no tattoos" "but I know If I didn't have tattoos I'd see someone with them and like.. (I want that) yeh"
