We visit Lee Malia of Bring Me The Horizon to talk about his guitar sounds and gear at the band’s HQ.

Welcome! In this episode, Dan and I load the TPS charabanc and head north to visit Lee Malia of Bring Me The Horizon. In case you’re not aware, BMTH are a phenomenally successful band who formed in 2004, having released six principle studio albums and won a slew of awards along the way. As we write this they are both Brit and Grammy nominated for 2020.
During the interview we get an insight into Lee’s world of huge production for giant stages and how that determines the gear and tone choices for his rig. We also get a look at Lee’s signature Epiphone guitars.

This is why TPS is great. They get artists in regardless of genre to analyse tone. BMTH isn't my cup of tea much like Mick and Dan, but this was fascinating. I feel like Lee got a lot out of it too.

Thanks Guy. We were both genuinely fascinated by Lee’s take on things.... not least discovering once again that there’s way more that unites guitar players than divides us. Les Paul, Klon, Marshall, volume. We are all siblings at the end of the day!

I love these types of TPS episodes because Mick's inner journalist starts to come out, keeping the conversation moving and asking interesting questions from which the viewer wants to hear a perspective of the artist. Keep up the great work, friends!

From an old time metalhead that watches your show, thanks for representing the metal. There is, actually, a whole lot you could talk about with metal tones. It's not just all Metal Zone sounds. There's tighter sounds, there's thick sounds, there's vintage sounds, there's gained-out sounds. Here's an idea for a show: 5150 style amp vs JCM 800 style amp. You could explore how each reacts differently to the different gain types (boost, drive, distortion, fuzz). You could explore how they sound with different distortion sources (amp vs pedal, or a blend of the two). And even though it's all probably been done before on dozens of other channels it would be nice to see it with That Pedal Show's enthusiasm for the exploration of tone.

I don't know the band Lee is from, Bring Me The Horizon, so I checked them out on Spotify. I was very surprised. The music did not sound at all like what I was expecting after listening to him in this video. The newest album is very electronica, and actually pretty chill. Some of the other albums have heavy stuff, but it's not by any means a strictly heavy sounding band. They changed quite a bit over the years. Very good episode, guys. Very enjoyable.

they've changed A LOT, not a single band has gone through a more drastic change than BMTH imo, they've gone from deathcore to electronic pop. all tracks on their demo album and the first two "official" albums (Count Your Blessings and Suicide Season) consist of extremely heavy (for the time) songs, bar a couple exceptions. really interesting band with a lot of fun tracks, even though most of their newer stuff isn't my cup of tea

I think that the fact that Lee has no idea why he likes what he likes is kind of awesome. He likes what he likes, and that’s good enough for him. I’ve been obsessed with his tone since BMTH’s There is a Hell, Believe Me I’ve Seen It album. It’s so meaty and punchy.

A few takeaways I have from watching this whole video. 1.) I love seeing Dan and Mick's enthusiasm when it comes to a style that they don't know. It's refreshing to see people with a passion to not just be the teacher, but to take learning just as seriously. Absolutely phenomenal interview! 2.) Every interview I've ever seen of Lee he is very awkward and reserved, and that's probably just a character thing, but despite this one starting that way by the end he really opened up and got excited about what he was talking about with you guys and that was great to see. Not just that, but a testament to how great you two are at what you do. All that being said, keep up the good work gents, and I'm hoping to seeing more "heavy" music end up on this channel in the future!

My two takeaways from this video: 1) The Klon circuit is just amazing. It can do so many things in so many different situations and always sounds fantastic. 2) There is a reason I love my Friday mornings and TPS. Dan and Mick continue to impress with these deep dives into touring musicians gear. It doesn't matter what the genre is, tone is tone and they are going to get to the bottom of it with smiles on their faces. Shout out to Lee as well, seems like a great guy.

When you guys said this didnt get many views on the Q+A I decided to come here and put this on a loop. I love TPS and Ive been watching since 2017 but most of the stuff you cover are for genres that I dont really play - although I dont play heavy music anymore it was awesome to see Lee on the show. OMG an hour of Lee content! Great video! (and it was uploaded on my birthday! Yay!) I love Lee. I like how you guys can keep the whole episode running without any awkward moment. Lee is usually quiet but in this video you made him open up more to share many interesting things. I'm new to electric guitar and I learned a lot from this episode alone. (Yes, I just learned that I hold pick the same way Lee did... and it's the wrong way to hold one. Oops. Also kudos for the timestamps. They help a lot) I might get his signature one day. Anyway I found it adorable when he said that people at the club thought he's 16 lol. Forever baby-face! Good to hear that apart from touring with his band he still does cover and plays at the club from time to time. Now I kinda wish that he would release some cover video for fun or start a class, it would be a dream come true. Great job, guys!

very inspiring interview. I've always loved his playing and sounds, and finally we have a long form interview to hear him talk about his tones. Awesome video. My band @gloomchild is playing our second show ever tomorrow and this has given me a lot of inspiriation for the show. BMTH for life

As someone who has grown with BMTH since their first album, I have always dreamed of this video. I can tell you guys are genuine in your interests and didn't write him off as some typical "active pickup 5150 player". You really took the time to know his rig, and more importantly, him as a player/person. Lee is always so quiet in interviews but you could really see him come alive here. He couldn't stop talking about his guitar and tone and his passion really shows. You guys definitely got a subscribe from me and I cant wait to go through and watch all of your videos!

Lee seems like a really cool, hardworking dude. Thank you guys for taking us along to meet him. Like I said on instagram, I haven't listened to the band in years, but I always love the perspective you guys get from your guests. I will give their new material a listen. Oddly, my tastes evolved to enjoy the even more heavy and absurd technical death metal, and other noisy sub-genres. When I pick up my guitar though, I'm usually playing bluesy rock stuff.

I grew up listening to BMTH in high school a year after Suicide Season came out. I was 17 back then. Been a fan of them ever since

fantastic episode! i didn't know the band at all, i'm glad you go out of your way to meet people outside of your genre of music you usually do it's amazing! I really like the fact that Lee is talking about using real tube amps, the dynamics it provides, and using less gain, and standard scale guitars! Myself, i'm playing in C standard, not metal at all, i just love playing really love, but i really don't enjoy playing a baritone scale, or even a 7 string neck. There is a sound to a standard scale guitar tuned down that you don't find on others, also the playability is still the same, nothing changes but the key. I think Ariel posen mentionned something similar in your episodes with him. Really really enjoying this episode!

Brilliant episode, nice change being away from TPS HQ and you both doing something different in a new locale, loved Lee's playing and on the strength of it just purchased the last 3 BMTH cd's !, loving the new music, it would be a great idea if you guys did the same again now and then with other guitar players, variety is the spice of life !! :)

Thanks Dan and Mick, it's always a learning experience on your channel and I appreciate all you guys do for the guitar world. I've had two serious concussions, both nearly fatal, so between the constant tinnitus and the other symptoms, I cannot listen to Lee's heavier stuff for any length of time before migraines kick in. His cleans and ambients though are really nice and were very surprising to hear from him. The stereotypical "death metal" player he is definitely not and his variety of playing was nice. Once again I learned that most of the time the gain is not as much as you think and once again the "Klon" is absolutely amazing!
