When you're a fossil hunter like me, there's nothing better than walking a pile of gooey mud after a heavy rain. That's the best opportunity to find prehistoric shark teeth, my primary target. This spot was particularly rewarding with quite a few fossils exposed after a full night long deluge. It is so awesome to me to be able to pick up these pieces of history right where I live. This is such a great hobby!

Boy I would love to hook up with you guys and learn more about this. I've only found a small few on the beaches. The small creeks and streams I've searched really didn't produce anything as I'm sure they've either been picked clean or I'm just not in the right spot. Sweet finds though! Love watching these!

@blackriverfossils
@blackriverfossils 8 лет назад
theres a creek at the corner of dorchester rd (642) and trolley rd where you can find some teeth. go at low tide and don't bring any digging tools because it is illegal to dig in waterways in the town of summerville. be careful the bottom is slippery!

Hey it's my 16 birthday soon and instead of having a party I chose to go fossil hunting, I'm really want to find a meg. Got any suggestions of a place I should go?
@blackriverfossils
@blackriverfossils 7 лет назад
that's a tough question because they aren't easy to find because so many people look for them. you might try looking on the banks of the ashley river up in the summerville area at low tide. you can also scuba dive in almost any river south of charleston sc but its cold now so it takes a lot of gear. good luck & happy birthday

What's been the most bounteous shark tooth hunting site in Summerville, in your experience? Can you give me any hints, like street names to look out for if I go through the area?
@blackriverfossils
@blackriverfossils 8 лет назад
+Martin Gamer It was a land site about 15 years ago - the one site produced over a hundred complete megalodon teeth, with 3 over the 6 inch mark. It is no longer able to be collected.
@martingamer5591
@martingamer5591 8 лет назад
blackriverfossils OK, thanks. Are there other spots in Summerville that you're not especially protective of, that you would be willing to point me towards? I'm gonna take the week off soon to go on a fossil expedition around the Carolinas to find teeth like these, and Summerville would be a spot to go to. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
@blackriverfossils
@blackriverfossils 8 лет назад
+Martin Gamer you should wait until the weather is warmer and the river levels are down, get your permit from SCIAA, and go on a canoeing trip on the Ashley River in Summerville. There are spots you can see the bottom. You'll find a lot if you have a whole week to look around. i suggest the river over land because land collecting is very inconsistent - creeks are reliant upon rain and excavations are few and far between and short lived when active.
@martingamer5591
@martingamer5591 8 лет назад
blackriverfossils How long does it take to obtain such a Permit? As for the weather thing, I may be limited in when I can take off. My employer is sort of finicky about letting us take time off, we get 3 weeks paid vacation/year and I have until halfway through March to use it. Is that too early?
@blackriverfossils
@blackriverfossils 8 лет назад
+Martin Gamer it takes a couple of weeks to get the permit. halfway through march might be ok, but the water will still be very cold and there is no telling what the levels will be. They are way too high right now.

Why is there such a large concentration of teeth in this area?
@blackriverfossils
@blackriverfossils 7 лет назад
the ocean piles up debris together, rocks, bones, and teeth included. This area was one of those "piles".

Normally I don't respond to ignorant comments like yours but this has me INFURIATED! I had nothing to do with the law, but I could tell you every detail about how it happened, when, and where! For years I've been telling people NOT to dig in the banks of streams and spreading the word about responsible collecting. You obviously know nothing about me. In the future before you make a statement like this you need to get your facts straight.
@geebee6420

the back is actually the front.
@blackriverfossils
@blackriverfossils Год назад
correct. the flat side of the tooth faces out of the jaw. its called the labial side. the curved side is called the lingual side and it faces the shark's tongue. front/back get mixed up a lot because collectors lay the tooth on the flat side and display the curved side which is why that side is also called the display side.
