I am shocked that england doesn't have window screens since they date back over 100 years.
@jmansmom6296
@jmansmom6296 3 месяца назад
I was told it was probably because their windows open differently. Like they open outside like a door so you couldn't put the screen on the outside of the window and if you put it on the inside of the window you can't open the window without taking out the screen 1st so it is just more complicated. But knowing the ingenuity of Americans I bet there is something on Amazon that would work and not be too complicated. Would be worth it to me. I hate fighting with flies even without having the window open I couldn't imagine with the window open and no screen. The flies alone would probably try and steal my food. Lol

Sometimes there's a family car, a truck (especially in more rural communities) then a car for the lady of the house, the man of the house. I suspect that's why 4 vehicles there. Most homes have garbage (food garbage only) disposals, yes. Apartments - it varies. Currently, I'm w/ my gram, so she just has 1 TV downstairs. BUT I have a TV in each of 2 bedrooms. IF it was just me here. I'd have 1 in the kitchen and one in the bathroom where the tub is. BUT that would upset Gram, so just the 2 upstairs for me. Now at Mom's. There's one in the back 'Florida Room', one in the living room, and 1 in Jen's room and one in Mom's bedroom.

One thing to remember. Her family mas MONEY!! That is FAR above the average American income. MOST people do not have all that. Screens are standard on any opening window, but the other stuff? That is rich people shit. I have one vehicle that I hope I can keep running, computer is my only TV, no in-sink disposal, fridge half that size with ice trays to empty, and no electric reclining couch. If I want to "recline" after work, I have to shower because I'll be in bed. Millions of Americans live in 14 x 80 ft (4.26 x 24.38 m) "Mobile Homes" (trailers). That's the maximum size "single vehicle" you can have on American roads without special permits. A "Double-Wide Mobile Home" is 2 halves bolted together. My second home was a "28 x 60".

Mailboxes: I can only speak about California, but growing up we had a mailbox in front of our house. Now a lot of new housing developments have community mail boxes. Not as 'intimate" as having regular mail person deliver the mail to your property. Also depends on what party of the country you live in, how old the neighborhood is and if your in a city or other environment. Garbage disposals: I've had one in every apartment or house I've lived since the 70s. Older homes probably do not have them. A/C: a must where I live. Summers can have weeks of triple digit temperatures and in the Southern and Eastern states the heat and high humidity can kill you. Window screens: Also a must. I lived in Europe for about 7 years and really missed being able to open the windows without having to chase around killing mosquitos. The difference is probably that in Europe most of the windows open outwards, so a screen would have to be removed in order to open or close the windows. TV's and Ice makers: We only have one ice maker (inside the freezer) and as far as TV's I know a lot of folks have one in the living room or den and in each bedroom but we only have one in the living room.

I'm in the US, been living in Utah for 8 years. No rental homes I've rented here have central AC, nor do they have window screens. Currently I have 2 window AC units. No ice makers or garbage disposals. I've lived in the Deep South (had central AC and definitely had screens), and grew up in New England (no AC, but had screens). Newer homes typically have the things she described, but there's still millions of older homes that don't have all the 'bells and whistles'. As for TVs, it depends on the family. I've never had more than one, and I haven't had one for ten years (and I don't really miss it). Never had more than one car per person.

I don't remember screens in the houses we lived in the SF suburbs in the 60's and there were always flies in the house. When we moved to NYC in the 70's that is the first time I saw screens in the windows. And the windows opened up to the outside with a crank like English houses so the screens were on the inside. And garbage disposals are illegal in NYC - the sewer system would not be able to handle all that food waste. But you see them all the time in less densely populated areas.

Almost every home has a garbage disposal is not accurate. I don't know anyone who actually has one. It is a typical American thing for sure but that can be a personal preference not a normal kitchen addition. Our waste/water system is designed to deal with food waste which I don't think is remotely the same in other countries. Yes having multiple tvs is common because who wants to constantly have to "take turns" watching your favorite shows. Even living alone, I had two. One for the living room and one in my bedroom. Currently I live with my aging mother and we had 3 tvs. One died and hasn't been replaced so of the 2 we have, we never even watch one but it's an option. We only have the one car. Mom doesn't drive but maybe once a week now but when my father was alive and they had two. While they worked different shifts that overlapped, in the event that one broke down, they were still fine. Multiple cars is completely normal. My younger nephew has one for himself, one for his wife, one for their eldest daughter plus he still has a small pickup truck which has come in handy for when family needs help moving something.

They say that Neccesity is the Mother of All Invention. We have these things, like AC and Window Screens because without them, it would be impossible to live. Take just the window screens thing. If you didn't have them, and you opened a window, everything in the world would come in, including birds, and even bats in some cases. I just can't fathom that screens aren't a thing in Europe. They're like a century's old technology at this point as another poster said. But you gotta have vertical slide windows for them to work and y'all have the crank out windows, and they wouldn't work in that case. And then you turn to AC. In most places in the lower 48 states, it gets over 75°F during the Summer. And upwards to 90 or 100 in some areas. Even Chicago gets into the 90s for extended periods of time. A human being just can live in an enclosed dwelling at pretty much anything over 80. The air gets stale and sweltering. Gotta have AC...there's just no way around it.
