One of the best quotes I ever heard was from Jimmie. "I know he was a great musician, and I know people love his music and think about him that way, but I miss my little brother"
@plasticoflamingo2952
@plasticoflamingo2952 5 лет назад
Side note, Fil. I was DJing in a bar the night SRV died. When I heard the news, I announced it to the crowd. I then told them that I was playing his music for the rest of the night. No one complained, and no one left. There was a sort of communal commiseration. Lots of things I don't remember from those days, but I'll never forget that.

I recall an interview with Stevie back in the late 1980’s from MTV. Stevie was asked who was the best rhythm guitarists ever had ever seen. Stevie replied simply “My brother Jimmy”. 👍 🎸

I think it was Robert Cray who said the same about Jimmy Vaughan. Jimmy was so sharp and persistant that you could tune a metronome after his rhythm guitar playing.

Sad this is, that no one ever gives Jimmy the credit he deserves as a guitarist! So underrated!!

Doesn't know quality so must call people underrated since you don't hear a person on FM radio 20 song rotation.
@35diamondgirl

Someone asked Texas Flood co-authors Alan Paul and Andy Aledort about this in a book chat, and while they agreed that Jimmie doesn’t get the credit he deserves, they pointed out that other musicians love him-among contemporary blues guitarists that list includes Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Ronnie Earl, Gary Clark, Jr., Joe Bonamasso, Doyle Bramhall II, Sue Foley…among his peers, Bonnie Raitt, Clapton, Billy Gibbons, Carlos Santana have huge respect for JV…originators like Muddy Waters and Freddie King were big fans and helped the Fabulous Thunderbirds get gigs in the late 70s…and Buddy Guy has invited him on tour in recent years. Blues music is considered too niche for the mainstream (if there is even such a thing as “mainstream” music anymore), so high profile recognition among the casual listening public isn’t there, but those in the know, know about JLV.
@randywissler9923
@randywissler9923 Год назад
@@35diamondgirl oh he definitely is well known and respected in the music community, I should have been more specific as far as your normal music fan. If you were to ask for their top guitarists list, 99% wouldn't name Jimmy Vaughan.

Given the Vaughan boys' relationship growing up as musicians it's an unlikely but wonderful thing, as brother embraces brother as they both play. Great one Fil! We are so fortunate that this got to happen before Stevie's loss. You can't help but smile when you see this. I still remember hearing the news about Stevie, 27 AUG 1990. Thank God he was in the TV and videotape age; we have many performances to look back on and listen to.

The Fabulous Thunderbirds were never the same after Jimmie Vaughan left the group. The album Family Style is one of my favorite albums. The Vaughan brothers have won 20 Grammy awards between then. Such a shame Stevie died just after he got off the drugs and started making music with his brother. Powerful Stuff went Diamond, then Jimmie left the band to join his brother. TFT had a very significant success, while together.

I was privileged to see SRV in Sioux Falls, SD just a few weeks before his death. I was amazed at his right hand movement. For most of his playing, his eyes were rolled back and he was totally into it. A good friend who worked at a local pawn shop got a private concert (from 5 feet away) when he came in and raided their secret stash of vintage instruments.

Brothers in family, technique, soul and expression. Great to see them get on so well. They both are certainly talented guitarists. Stevie thought no one was better than Jimmy. In the end Jimmy states, he learned from Stevie as well..humanity and sobriety. If you haven't already, catch Jimmy's heartfelt speech at Steve's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. It's here on RU-vid. Genuine, personal and touching. R.I.P. Stevie. Thanks for all the Love you passed our way. ❤

Oct 30, 1985 saw SRV at the Orpheum in Memphis...Jason and the Scorchers opened. Stevie walked out playing Scuttle Buttin. I knew of him from working at Record Bar the prev 2 years. He broke 6 strings that night! I was there with some waaay dedicated Deadheads and they were in awe! Ended the show laying down with his head against a monitor, pulled his hat down over his eyes and just jammed his Stevie stuff. Saw him either 1 or 2 times at Memphis In May too. I hope someone who may have been there reads this! Thanks, Fil!!

So glad this was recorded, otherwise, no one would believe it actually happened. This is so brilliant and beautiful. I won't comment about the musical ability, because really, what else could I add??? So I'll just say that as a mother, it warms my heart and breaks it at the same time. I wish these brothers could have grown old together. Yes, we were robbed of a superhuman talent, but oh, his mother!!! It's just not right.

Yes Fil,Stevie's hands were incredibly strong as were Jimmie's for that matter. He has briefly played on & signed 3 of my guitars. Said that he liked them but it felt like they were strung with rubber bands (.09 high E) & I tried to play his & told him that it felt like it was strung with suspension bridge steel cables! He conducted a mojo spell on my Tele Custom & drew a Mexican hex symbol on it after signing it Soul To Soul. When Jimmie saw what Stevie had drawn on it he told me that Stevie was into that Mexican voodoo shit & that he must have really liked you to have put that symbol on. You are correct in that he wasn't a tall man & we were both the same size. I had been dressing similar to him years before I'd ever heard of him & people used to think that I was him at shows & take photos & ask me to sign their show programs. I'd tell them that they have the wrong guy. Stevie thought it was funny & said that I was a good interference runner for him & said "You be UV Ray" He was such a funny guy & he genuinely cared for people who were struggling with addiction troubles. I take consolation in knowing that he left this world a happy man. He used to check in to hotels as Isa Newman after he cleaned up. Before he would sign in as Otto Moretone inspired by Jimmie saying "there oughtta be more tone." I hope that this lengthy response isn't deterring you from posting more informative analyze this & analyze that videos. Please do look up Fabulous Thunderbirds Full Time Lover to see Jimmie in superb blues form!! Cheers!

As a Vaughan brothers admirer and non-musician, I appreciate your thoughtful and knowledgeable reactions to SRV’s playing. Fil, I have a real treasure you will love. Its a video of Stevie simply called “Sound check”. Yep, Stevie comes “strolling” in, cowboy hat, full length fur coat (in Texas) and cowboy boots. It’s obvious he’s just woke up. IT’S AMAZING. there are a few out there, the best one is about :23 minutes long. It’s a mini-concert and flawless, perfection. You would love it, whomever is videotaping it focuses a lot on his hands.

I went to a John Prine concert in 1980 and the Fabulous Thunderbirds opened for him. They blew my socks off. I have been a fan of Jimmy ever since.

Great Fil. You are so good at this! I’ve seen Jimmie at a live performance but I never got a chance to see Stevie at a concert. Darn. Unbelievable brothers!!!

Often when I see video of SRV, I get a tear in my eye. I was at Alpine Valley Wisc. the night he died, so it is very sad to watch sometimes. I got to see Jimmy and the Fabulous thunderbirds twice when he was touring as the opening act for Double trouble. He was good, but was so overshadowed by the genius of SRV that I never appreciated his more traditional blues playing. A very talented family!

Thanks for another Great Vaughan analysis Fil. Weird seeing Jimmie Ray in the title lol... Stevie has so much incredible live footage out there. One of my favs is the second solo on Couldn't Stand the Weather at ACL!

Or... Leave My Girl Alone! That's some scary good stuff. Or, Mary Had a Little Lamb, or... Superstition, or... ok I'll stop.

There is a Chet Atkins video where he plays a nylon string and performs Stars and Stripes Forever (a marching band tune) and at one point Chet is playing 3 melodies at once!

Hey Fil. I love going through your older videos. I got to see Jimmie and Stevie do this at several shows. They would start with different songs, but always end with Pipeline. Got to see The Fabulous Thunderbirds open for ZZ Top and the Rolling Stones. Great show. ROCK!!

I love this video and what a great LP ("Family Style", with Nile Rodgers) with the two of them ! If you look thru RU-vid you'll find Tom Bresh and is father, Merle Travis back in the 70's playing on the same single neck guitar and they're playing on a big Gibson jumbo Super 400

I can not believe that I have never seen this before! What a gem! This would be difficult enough on six strings per neck...

I always liked this guy, Phil. He is sharp as hell and knows his guitar. I like how much respect he has for the brothers. Kudos, my man.

What a fantastic storyline with this presentation !!!! Thanks to you, Fil, I have a whole new feeling for BOTH Vaughn’s---so sad we lost one of the brothers, Stevie due to a helicopter crash !!!! But older brother, Jimmie still rocks !!!!
