At the beginning of the video, the team in white had to call a time out right away because of the crowd noise... Time outs are valuable, and best saved for time management purposes.

Yes. Communication is very key in American football. If the other teams offense can’t communicate a call they will often have to take a timeout rather then try to continue the play. The fans know this and will try to drown out the opposition’s communication when they have the ball.
@2point153
@2point153 Год назад
To build on this each play that only have a certain amount of time to hike the ball. The countdown is usually displayed right under the time limit for the game. So as it got closer to “0” and Michigan’s coach could see the weren’t going to hike the ball in time he called a timeout because it wouldn’t be a penalty for “delay of game” on the offense which is a 5 yard penalty.
@CheesiestCheesehead
@CheesiestCheesehead Год назад
And also imagine being a visiting team which that was, trying to hear when your qb says hike to snap the ball. And as the above commenter said the clock is ticking down. And the closer to 0 it gets the louder the crowd gets making it even more impossibly hard to listen for the snap lol gotta love football the crowd noise definitely makes a difference. If u watch you will see the players on the sidelines telling the crowd to get loud when it’s time for the visitors to snap the football. There’s a video of players talking about what it’s like playing in the loudest nfl stadiums lol funny how they explain the experience

Yeah this is the Penn State whiteout game and has the loudest decibels in all of college football. Other teams hate playing in the whiteout because they can’t hear to communicate with each other. False start penalties are also common in this game bc of the noise. Also Penn State is one of the best teams in the BIG 10 after Michigan and Ohio State. The only team to regularly beat this team is Ohio State. Also, the biggest and best rivalry in all of sports is Michigan and Ohio State. There is a huge history of that rivalry, including the 10 year war. They’ve made documentaries in this rivalry!

This is the Penn State (Nittany Lions) vs the Michigan (Wolverines). The Penn State stadium holds @ 105,000. The reason the referees blew a whistle is for 'Delay of Game'. Michigan couldn't hear themselves so took too long to snap the ball. It is possible they blew a whistle because Michigan called a time out for the same reason. The crowd roared because they caused Michigan to draw a penalty or use a time out. Michigan-Penn State has become a pretty big rivalry. PSU wasn't in the same conference before 1993.

@@DNReacts Down in the bottom right of your screen, there is a tiny little clock counting back from 40 seconds. Each team gets 40 seconds in between downs. If you don't snap the ball before the clock runs out, it's a penalty called "Delay of Game". That's what happened here. The Penn State fans caused so much noise, the Wolverines couldn't snap the ball.... so they caused more noise :)

It's especially loud near the endzones, since the players are surrounded on three sides by screaming fans. If you're the visiting team and you're having to start from the 20 yard line, it's very difficult to communicate the intended play, even in the huddle, and nearly impossible at the line of scrimmage. Michigan had to use one of their timeouts because the quarterback couldn't call an audible over all the noise.

The number next to the team's name on the scoreboard shows their ranking amongst all other college teams. Only the top 4 teams in the US make it to the playoffs/championship (soon to be 6, 8 or 12). Generally, the top 4 teams have gone undefeated or only lost 1 game, while also beating several other highly ranked teams. So this PSU/Michigan game was a big deal because both teams were in the top 15 and trying to work their way up the standings. But most games are wild regardless of their chances to win a championship because home-town loyalty/bias is very big.

The reason it was intense was because they had to call a timeout on the very 1st play. You only get 3 timeouts per half, and they’re extremely valuable. When you saw them line up and prepare to run a play the quarterback has to communicate to the team any adjustments. But it was so loud that no one could hear so they had to burn a timeout to avoid miscommunication and have something bad happen

One thing to note is that when the home crowd's team is on defense they will try to get louder on purpose to disrupt the opposing team's communication on offense. That's why it sounds more like an 'OOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHH' than an actual cheer. That's why in the NFL you'll sometimes see quarterbacks using their arms to tell their home crowd to 'quiet down' so they can hear their plays.
@Terrell070
@Terrell070 Год назад
You only get 3 time outs per half, it's bad to waste a timeout. It would be even worse if it was in the 2nd half. One of the things that I think is one of the most enraging is when a team I'm rooting for uses a time out in the 3rd quarter. Worse if it's a home game. The timeout later is probably going to be more valuable than the 5 yards now. Timeouts are most valuable towards the end of the game if you're trailing & the other team has the ball. The other team can run off 40 seconds between plays provided there isn't some other clock stoppage, such as an incomplete pass. Most fans know to be loud when the defense is on the field, and quiet when the offense is on the field.

They are both ranked in the top ten in the nation, but more importantly, they are in the same conference ("The Big Ten" conference--a well-renowned, old conference with typically several teams in the top 10 to 20 ranked including Ohio State U., Wisconsin, Michigan State, Iowa, Penn State and Michigan. This one is not a top rivalry as such---for MIchigan the top rival is Ohio State--but it is a big game between highly ranked teams--and in college football even one loss can put you out of the running to make the playoff for the national championship--EVERY game is big.

Some people confuse a hundred thousand people getting pumped up before a game starts as "electric" against a hundred thousand or so people already being pumped up by a game being on the line against your hated rival, and the football gods answering a 12 year old kid's prayer with a miracle play that actually effects victory, the most notable in this context when this same Michigan team played their rivals Michigan State and lost the game when leading by four I believe and their punter muffed the snap, fumbled the ball and Michigan State ran the fumble into the end zone for a touchdown giving them a two point victory...while the clock went to 00:00. Now THAT was electric.

The opposing team (Michigan) is on offense and the crowd is so loud the offense can’t hear the communications needed to get in formation or snap the ball which resulted in Michigan needing to burn a timeout to figure out what they were doing to avoid a penalty. This is how the crowd can actually effect the game in football. Actually in big games like this, one of the away teams first objectives is to try to either get a big play or string together a bunch of successful little plays to try to settle the crowd down. This is known as “taking the crowd out of it” or “silencing the crowd” because if you don’t the crowd will just grow louder and louder on the thought they are hurting the opposing team’s offense.

Extremely loud fan noise is sometimes called "the twelfth man" because there are 11 men on the fireld for each team making the loud fans the twelfth team member. In addition to making the visiting team waste timeouts, it's soo deafening that the players can't hear the quarterback & they move before the quarterback tells the center to snap (give) him the ball. That's called a "False Start" & is penalized by moving the offense back 5 yards. During the week leading up to an away game like this the visiting team's coach usually makes them practice to extremely loud noise. And teams even have "silent counts" where they use hand signals and/or foot movements. This is very common in the NFL as well.

Beginning of video was "delay of game" penalty. Team has 30 seconds to huddle and snap the ball or they get this 5-yard penalty making it now 4 downs to get 15 instead of 4 downs to get 10 yards. One can call a timeout before the 30 second clock runs out but then you have essentially wasted a valuable time out just because your team could not get the ball snapped in time--you only get 3 time outs/half.

They were scheduled to play post season against Southern Methodist University in the Cotton Bowl. SMU requested a meeting to discuss players, and it was rumored they would refuse to play if the black players took the field. A player on the Penn State team, Steve Suhey, responded to the request "We are Penn State. There will be no meetings." It has since become a slogan to indicate solidarity, tenacity, and commitment. Ask any alumni, and they will gladly tell you: We ARE Penn State!

To answer your question on Michigan vs PSU being a rivalry. Short answer is yes long answer is no. The two schools since Jim Harbaugh (UofM's HC) and James Franklin (PSU HC) have made this match up a much more intense one over the last 10yrs. The coaches dont like each other very well, the fans dont like each and the players dont like each other. They arent a traditional rival like OSU, ND, and MSU teams who have been our most hated rivals for 120+ yrs. However over the last 15yrs especially in the last 10 PSU vs UofM has become something more of a rivalry game. PSU has been a member of the B1G ten conference since 1993 so the years of matching up against each other has only been really going on for 30yrs. Its only the last 15yrs or so that the rivalry has really picked up steam!

This is a good rivalry but the biggest n best in college football is Michigan vs ohio state. The atmosphere at both stadiums is incredible the last two years.

So I was there as a Penn State fan. Your ears actually hurt after that game when there are 110,000 people screaming. I don't think it was the most electric moment in college football. I think the whole thing is the crowd was so loud that Michigan could not get the first play going because they could not hear the quarterback due to the crowd noise. The best part of a whiteout game is when they are at night everyone is tailgating and drinking all day!

LSU (and a few other colleges) have set off the scales as an earthquake more than once. This video isn’t that well done so it’s not explained why it’s considered electric. It’s better in compilation videos so y’all know what you’re looking at. Schools practice playing schools like LSU by cranking up their speakers until they can’t hear because you can’t during the game. The fans are insane loud.

@@jamie-ou8xv Sorry man. Ive been to a white out game in Happy Valley as well as a number of other locations. To each their own but as far as in stadium experience Kyle Field is probably the best followed by the big house. As far as game day atmosphere I would have to say the grove at Ole Miss. For context I am an Auburn fan.

The fans were so loud that the team quarterback could not be heard. The refs will stop the game and tell the team making the noise to settle down. They can be penalized if they don't.

Got a suggestion, react to "Biggest Hockey Hits Ever" by The Highlight Factory. Another North American sport, most popular in Canada. These players are faster and hit harder on average than football players. Would be interesting to see you two check it out. :D

Michigan can't call a play because they can't hear. Not a huge rivalry; except for being in the same conference and both being highly ranked at the time. It's also Penn State's famous "white out". This clip doesn't really convey the most electric moment -- many other videos about this game, other white out games and other teams are equally if not more electric than this particular clip. Attendance 106,000+.

A not so fun fact that kind of ruins the video... Penn state fucked up, because they shiuld not have been playing any music while the play clock was running. It's an absolutely electric moment... But one that should have never existed.

The best explanation of what happened here is that the title of this video was completely overhyped by a Penn State grad. This wouldn't make the top 100 'electric' moments in college football history let along the best of all time.
