Hamish Willis, one of British Nordic Walking's National Trainers, teaches the benefits of teaching good descending technique to Nordic Walkers at the 2020 British Nordic Walking Annual Instructor Convention.
Effective deceleration is an important part of many sports and, with Nordic Walking being a useful cross-training activity, it is possible to improve your deceleration technique by practising Nordic Walking downhill with good form. The position you take for this, is the same athletic position for deceleration in other contexts. It is also useful for older Nordic Walkers to practise downhill technique as deceleration skills and stability can weaken with age.
Hamish also demonstrates snap downs and one-legged snap downs as exercises that can help improve the ability to decelerate safely and effectively.
