Another Manchester vid now with plenty of EMU action. This one features ex Network SouthEast 305 & 309 'Clacton' EMU's, they had the red NSE stripe painted blue and put straight into traffic. Also seen are 304's and class 101 Met Cam DMU's along with 47, 86 & 87's on Inter-City workings. If you liked the video please subscribe to my channel, there are lots more transport & quirky vids to upload!

Strange how I now find myself liking what I see here. Plenty of loco-hauled and slam door stock, no stupid different coloured doors, no hideous units with uncomfortable seating (like voyagers), and the weather’s nice!

All those EMU's take me back to the days l travelled from Chadwell Heath into Liverpool Street. The Clacton units were great trains. Speedy and comfortable. Travelled on them a lot as a kid to the seaside. Used to look great in BR colours.

My favourite emu, i was fortunate to ride them between Crewe and Stafford (after dropping off the 37s on the North Wales Coast) they could certainly shift, not a unit to stick your head out i was 16 at the time great days.. 😊

They were always good for a thrash down the Great Eastern main line. Some of the drivers told me they have been run at 100mph plus on occasions!

@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus 5 лет назад
The Clactons kept to four cars but the 305's were indeed reduced by one car to blend in with the 304's which they were replacing (i assume due to 304's being due a works visit while the ex NSE units still had some time left before they were due).
@AndreiTupolev

What a fascinating collection of second-hand rolling stock; I wonder how BR spun the 305s as being wonderful NEW! trains. The 309s, though, were certainly a radical advance on what went before. I love the Met-Cam DMUS filling the place with a fug of fumes.
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus 5 лет назад
BR didn't spin anything. The 305's were just introduced as they were basically the same as a 304 unit so the ordinary passengers didn't see any change. I imagine the 304s were due a works visit so were withdrawn and ex NSE units with time left on the clock were drafted in-result! Made for some good filming. The 309s were always a quality unit, basically MkI stock (indeed a fleet reformation in the early 80s actually added loco hauled MkI's into the units!

The 309s used to turn up on the short lived Euston Manchester Airport service, axed when Virgin made a fuss about it, (the real reason it was axed!). Platforms 1 to 4 used to entertain the Manchester Sheffield DC electrics. Axing that and the Woodhead route was a big mistake. It would be well used by passengers now, including walkers going into the Peak district.

Sat in the cab of the class 86 vulcan heritage between colchester to ipswich at about 100mph in the late early 90's. 309's were the best units b.r. made bar none. Used to be on them a lot as my dad worked on b.r. on the clacton branch from mid 70's until mid 90's. It's such a shame they are not used in a heritage capacity on the Thorpe-le-Soken to Walton Branch as 2 sets are still around on hertiage lines. Greater Anglia are missing a trick!

No, sadly not. Their use in Manchester only came about because NSE had finished with them. And i'm sure some 'crank' type managers put a good case forward for their use in the north west, training costs being cheaper than a works visit for 304's that were due attention possibly???

@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus 5 лет назад
@@grahamroffey1566 Yes, my older footage pre 2006 was all filmed on VHS (i had done a bit of cine before that, VHS was soo much better + had sound as well!). I first copied it over to DVD in short play mode to keep the quality up (the VHS tapes i filmed onto were full sized so no loss of quality unlike vid8 where they had to be cpoied onto full sized tapes) and then used a free programme (x-media recode) to converted them to MP4. The VHS tapes have now degraded and have been disposed of but i still have the DVD's and several hard drives of them in MP4.

The 309s had a diagram working the 17:16 SX Piccadilly to Birmingham NS via Crewe. They also did an overnight Birmingham International via Manchester Airport. Good days.
@limeyfox
@limeyfox 4 года назад
Think they were predominantly for an hourly Man Picc-Man Air express shuttle but also turned up on local diagrams to Crewe and Stoke, plus the aforementioned peak and overnight Birmingham workings. On Saturday mornings there was a semi-fast 07xx Stafford-Man Picc via Stoke they worked that I remember. When North Western Trains won the franchise they briefly had express diagrams to Euston!
