Jim is a funny guy, but he does exaggerate a bit, firearms have never been banned in Australia. I’ll go into more details below, but here’s some USA stats from last year: * There were approx 640 mass shootings in the USA in 2023 (mass shooting = 4 or more people shot, either killed or wounded). *Those approx 640 mass shootings in 2023 average out to 1.75 per day * There were 40,000+ firearm related death in the USA in 2023. * In the USA there are MORE firearms than people! Being an Aussie, guess which country I’m going to be safer in? And it ain’t Merica!! Back to Jim, firearms are not banned in Australia, actually there are more registered firearms here today compared to back in 1996. But..... Since 1996 we have introduced stricter licensing and registration. Any Australian can apply for a firearm licence (except for those with a criminal record or a history of mental illness), but you have to have a ‘valid’ reason, such as: sport shooter, hunting, collector, farmer, pest control, etc. Licensing is also strict regarding the ‘type’ of firearm, eg, semi-auto rifles are restricted to people such as professional pest controllers, you can’t have ‘any’ firearm you want, it has to match the type of licence you have. The average idiot in the suburbs can’t own a semi-auto firearm, or any firearm, without a valid reason, for obvious reasons! Self defence is not a valid reason in Australia, we don’t live in fear. Yes we do have firearms in Australia, but linked to sensible rules and laws, unlike Merica. Cheers,
armed security in schools in America, Parkland Florida is a good excuse as to why that won't work look at the police that turned up at the school, they stayed in the corridor for an hour while the gunman kept shooting kids and teachers. the gun control reaction here in Australia was a mix between Port Arthur in Tasmania and Dunblane in Scotland as to why our government reacted so quickly with new gun controls. You can still get guns over here but they are licensed meaning you have to apply for a license which is usually from your local police station, if you said to the police officers applying for the license "I want it for protection" you are more likely to get a "reject" stamped on the application.
Wow, 28 years, I can’t believe it’s that long ago. The memory never goes through. Walter Mikac was my local chemist a bit before it happened. I remember his wife coming into the pharmacy with Alanna and Madeline. The locals in the shop wanted to meet the girls, I remember one was in a stroller. I only remember Nanette smiling with pride. Yeah, when Port Arthur is mentioned I remember the tiny smiling girls and their mum I met for only a few minutes 💞😂😮
yes. The roommate he was with at the time is Steve Hughes, also a comedian and a death metal drummer. He's Australian but based in Manchester where the attack happened
Port Arthur was the biggest, but Las Vegas shooting has beaten it! The yanks couldn't let us Aussies have that title! Its actually quite sad the gun culture in the US.
Sad is definitely right. It’s so darn big a problem and they quote their constitution, I always had hope it would improve for them and the tragic loss of thousands over the years due to guns. But sadly I can’t see it happening. I often think, if James Madison knew what he wrote would kill so many including innocent children , he would never have written it, or read it worded it. Just pondering here, if he could come back now, which he can’t - what would he say?
