Britny Fox would be one of the last glam metal groups to emerge out of the scene before it all came crasing down in the 90’s. The band, which hailed from the east coast music scene was made up of half ofCinderella’s original lineup. Last week I did a video on the band Cinderella. I had a number of people in that video and on the request form saying i should do britny fox next. So without further adieu lets do the band Britny Fox.
Brittany Foxx’s origins date back to the east coast music scene - more specifically New Jersey and philadelphia and it begins with guitarist Michael Kelly Smith who was from Reading, Pennsylvania. He would to move to Philadelphia to be closer to the local music scene. One of his first bands he would play in would be called Telepath & they played covers. They would lose their second guitar player and auditioned some people including future Cinderella member Tom Keifer.While a few members of Telepath preferred someone else, Smith was adamant that Keifer was the guy and he got the gig. Smith and Keifer soon became best friends and played in several cover bands together, before forming Cinderella. Prior to naming themselves Cinderella they had floated the idea of using the monicker Creep Show. Cinderella were one of the first bands at the time to do original songs on the east coast since playing covers was super lucrative at the time. The pair soon hooked up with drummer Tony Destra and bassist Eric Brittingham.
The quartet recorded a demo and had their manager shop it around to different record labels. The problem was, virtually every label turned them down claiming they sounded too much like AC/DC and Aerosmith. Smith however, at one point had nearly auditioned for Kiss and still had Gene Simmon’s number. Simmons took a liking to Cinderella and tried to land them a deal with Polygram records. But Gene wanted to sign them to a deal whereby he would write their songs and by the members of Cinderella’s own admission, Simmon’s songs weren’t very good so things didn’t work out at the time
It would be Jon Bon Jovi who was in town in Somerdale (Somerdale), New Jersey working on the band’s second album 7800 degree fahrenheit and he saw Cinderella perform at the galaxy club, a place where the band had a regular residency. Jon loved the band and notified derek schulman of polygram records
Shulman who had previously passed on the band after hearing a demo they cut. But at the insistence of jon he asked schulman to go check the band’s live show out. Schulman still wasn’t sold on the band, but he recognized Keifer and Brittingham’s talent. He would tell Cinderella’s manager a guy named Larry Mazer that he would sign the band to a development deal worth $30K if they got rid of their guitarist and drummer - Michael Kelly Smith and Tony Destra. Keiffer was actually having disagreements with both Smith and Destra over musical ideas, so they were fired from the band. Cinderella would go on to have a good deal of success with their first album 1986’s night songs selling over 3 million copies, making it the biggest debut record since boston’s ten years prior.
Smith was perplexed at the decision telling vwmusicrocks At that point, with MTV and the image and the songs, it didn’t matter if you had a great drummer or an adequate drummer. Same with [guitarist] Jeff LaBar

Brings back memories... Smith taught guitar at a music store near me in a suburb of Philly. This was after grunge had put most of the glam bands out of work. Michael was always cordial to me although I never took lessons from him. The music business was so strange back then. You could see guys on MTV and think they had "made it" but in reality were barely scraping by.

@patquinn4772

That's so much like today's country music. The only difference is for the most part the hair metal bands wrote their own music. Country music has music row,where writers write music, and artist,and record labels pic the songs. They have a money maker going, right now and there's nothing, on the horizon that's gonna change that.

My band did a gig with them about 12 years ago or so, and as far as we knew Billy was the only original member. I do believe Paris was the frontman at the time as well. We played a relatively small rock club in the Dayton, Ohio area, and there was literally 30-40 people there, including my bands wives/girlfriends and friends. I’m not saying this as an insult to the band, I thought they sounded great actually, but it was sorta sad. I still have the shirt I wore onstage that night, that Mr. Childs kindly signed for me 😎

@@jeffhenry7749 I've been saying that since I was a kid/teenager back in the 90's. It got especially worse during the mid-90's up to the late 90's. I hated all that shit...I hated and still hate Rap and hip hop with a fucking passion, that too killed and is continuing to murder real music. I stick to music from 1955-1992. Old rock and roll from the 50's, the British invasion, the British blues boom, psychedelic pop/rock, progressive, early to mid 70's proto metal, N.W.O.B.H.M., glam metal, speed/thrash metal, power metal, old school blues and most forms of jazz from 1966-1979. The only music genre I listen to that's somewhat current is Indie/dreampop and some of the shoegaze stuff, but other than that real music is in a very sad state these days.

Long Way to Love is a legit great song, Girlschool is a classic trashy (in a good way) 80's hair metal rocker. I recall thinking Dream On (seeing the video on MTV) would be a huge hit, but somehow didn't gain traction, and you really didn't hear from them again. That said, a good trip down memory lane, especially since their self titled album was probably the 2nd album I ever owned (on cassette), as I was 12.

I was granted the opportunity of having a guitar lesson with Micheal Kelly Smith last year...He was the coolest, nicest guy ever. Not to mention super down to earth and extremely generous. Britny Fox deserves so much more than they ever received.🤘🏼

Saw them at the Stone in SF, remember Michael Smith was there. Cool to hear about these guys. Back in early 90's when I suppose glam was still in but going out. No DD there 😮 but I have one of his guitar picks

Their song Louder from Bite Down Hard is fantastic. That whole lp is amazing. I also saw Cinderella a couple times at The Galaxy. Britny Fox too. And always the bridesmaid band The Dead End Kidz ( those dudes were old then lol )

Britny Fox was a great band and the first 2 albums were awesome. I haven’t had a chance to listen to any other of their albums yet. Black eye Susan was great also. It sucks that they didn’t last long. Great songs and playing on all 3 records. Hopefully they can get back together for a reunion.

It was a band like many that only had success with a single album: T.SiSTER, Dangerous Toys, Kix, Damn Yankees, Slaughter among others... And they only left losses and debts to the label. It's not fair that they sell half a million copies and the label keeps 90% of the profits.

Great vid! I’ve always loved Britny Fox and felt like they were just a little too late to the party. Hopefully they can get back together for another album and some festivals like many bands from that era have done. Too much talent being wasted by not doing something

Dizzy Dean was actually pretty active around Philadelphia after the Blackeyed Susan album. He actually put together another version of Blackeyed Susan that included Black Cowes guitarist Jeff Cease and recorded a demo called Just A Taste…..as in just a taste of what’s to come. But that only lasted a few months. He recorded another album under the band name Love Saves The Day, Then for whatever reason he recorded a demo under the name Jarod Dean that was pretty much only heard of in the Philly area…..it was god awful if I’m being honest. He finally released a solo album called Drive My Karma that I think you can still find of iTunes. Then about 10 years ago or more he said he was working on a country album, was somewhat active on social media, and even made a full blown video for a country song. Then out of nowhere removed it all and vanished into musical obscurity. His friend recorded a lot of the stuff on video in the 90’s. There is a great hour plus video on RU-vid of some of those musical projects.

his story is one i would love to hear, told by him. he was crazy talented, and his deal for blackeyed susan, at the time, was one of the biggest the label had ever given.
@rkline65
@rkline65 4 месяца назад
@@patrickreeves4650 You're right. They were so behind it that I remember stories how they even had to pay another band off to use the name because it was already trademarked. The Black Crowes first album was huge at the time, as a gap between hair metal and grunge, and it got a lot of comparison to that. He had the look, the band, the songs, and everything, but listening to that album all these years later, I think it's just an over produced album. It would have been a lot better as a more guitar oriented album and not so many keyboards, horns, backing vocals, and all that. Do a RU-vid search of "Dean Davison 403 Liberty Lane' and you'll see a full video of all he did thru the 90's, it's pretty cool.
@patrickreeves4650
@patrickreeves4650 4 месяца назад
@@rkline65 the 403 liberty lane stuff is super cool. the era of blackeyed susan was always my favorite, and the record was great, but i totally agree...it was over-produced, and the single chosen to lead the record was a terrible choice. i would have run with she's so fine, or the ballad that wound up on harley davidson and the marlboro man.
