Hi. Traditional banana pudding has vanilla pudding made from scratch on the stove top. When you layer, you normally put a layer of banana and then cover with pudding, repeat with wafers. One more banana layer and cover with pudding. Decorate with the round vanilla wafers. Some people put meringue on top.

Def cooked and have to use real whipped cream. One of my stepmom’s would cook the banana in the pudding, then strain it before it got to thick, before finishing up the pudding. This infused the flavor without your banana turning black. Then when you served you put fresh cut banana on top. It’s my fav banana pudding.

For the cold version, I recommend putting Nila wafers at every layer...so bottom - wafers, 2 bananas, and enough pudding mix to cover. Then add a layer of wafers, 2 more bananas and mixture. Keep going and do the end with the whipped cream and crushed wafers like you did. Refrigerate overnight. It helps the wafers to soften a little. I use about 1-1/2 boxes of wafers in my banana pudding to give you an idea. It's hard to beat a good banana pudding! I have loved watching your adventures. I'm from Tennessee, in Appalachia country, so good southern food is what we do!

A little tip my Mom taught me: If you want to keep sliced bananas from going brown, sprinkle a little lemon juice on top of the bananas after you slice them. The lemon juice will keep the bananas from turning brown or getting mushy, and you shouldn’t be able to taste the lemon flavor in the final product. Enjoy your videos so much!

First of all, great job, Mrs. H! And really, there are tons of ways to make banana pudding. Different regions do it differently. I do have a few pro tips for ya: - #1 in importance! Get yourselves a rubber spatula! I call it the flavor saver, because all the stuff that gets left behind in the pan or the bowl is all the super tasty bits. And it doesn't take 20 swipes to empty out the bowl. Trust me, a rubber spatula is one of the most important tools a cook can have! 👍 - From my experience, the bananas you used for the baked version were spot on, just on the other side of perfect ripeness, so they mush up nice. For me, you want perfectly snack ripe bananas for the chilled version, but slice them a bit thinner. - Add one or two drops of lemon juice as you start whipping the cream. Literally one or two drops. Not only will it give the whipped cream a teeny tiny pop of flavor that you won't hardly notice but will definitely enjoy, it also actually helps the cream thicken. - A lot of people get hung up on Nilla Wafers, and they are nice in banana pudding, but they are not really essential. You can make a simple biscuit base crust and crumble. I've made it with chocolate biscuit base, peanut butter cookie base, I've seen others use Oreos, all sort of ways to do basically every element in banana pudding. - Lastly, it looked like you could even take that meringue top a little bit further. Maybe it was just the video perspective, but it looked like there was a bit more runway there. So don't be afraid to experiment with it and custom tune it your taste. And get that rubber spatula! :D

Mostly we just mix up the Jello stuff, and maybe put some bananas in it and whipped cream on top. It's just a quick dessert. But Mom's banana cream pie is from scratch and is a whole other level of delicious. Miracle Whip is a tangy salad dressing which people use as a sandwich spread. It even comes in a mayonnaise jar (I've never seen anyone use it on salads. I think they even took the words "salad dressing" off the label). You're probably thinking of Cool Whip. But Reddi Wip is much better. Cool Whip is made with mostly oil but Reddi Wip is actually real whipped cream, made with cream. Or you can get heavy cream and sugar and whip it up yourself.

Jello Banana Pudding is an abomination. Eat the real banana pudding, and throw out that tripe you got out of a box. BTW, you don't normally eat banana pudding hot. You let it sit for a day to allow the flavors to meld together. Plus, many people do not bake it at all. They don't use a meringue topping. They just crumble a few wafers on top, wrap it in Saran Wrap, and pop it into the refrigerator overnight.

I'm sorry, but the key to a good Southern Banana Pudding (the cold one anyway) is giving the Nilla Wafers enough **Time** to soke up some of the liquid from the puddin so they become soft like cake and it makes the puddin more dense!! So it needs to sit in the fridge "At Least" over night (12hrs)...otherwise you are just eating the cold raw ingredients. And you really should use the big ones...the little ones are more dense and take Way Too Long to get soft..if they ever do..LoL!! But it was fun watching you go at it!! LoL!! Cheers!

Mrs. Haitch, I am like you, not a fan of bananas but I love banana pudding, and I prefer the warm version, because it's made from "scratch" (translated: not made with instant mixes). Some kitchen advice, try to use just ripe, not quite green bananas. If the bananas are too ripe, they have a tendency to turn brown and look unpleasant to eat. edit: another tip, you can sprinkle a little fresh lemon juice on your sliced bananas to keep them from turning brown. The mini Nilla wafers are fine, the big ones just fill in the spaces between the layers better and doesn't take as many wafers to layer. You'll find the recipe for the meringue banana pudding on the Nilla wafer box, that's the common recipe used where I come from (Texas).

I've only had the non-baked version, but we made it differently. First off we don't crush a banana into the pudding. If we want the pudding itself to have a banana flavor we use banana pudding instead of vanilla. Some of your bananas were kind of ripe, we wouldn't use those, only bananas that are bright yellow, no hint of browning. We just use straight milk in the pudding. We slice up the bananas into thin slices then mix it into the pudding, no layering of the bananas. Layer the dish or pan with the Nilla Wafers, bottom and sides, then pour in the pudding with the bananas. Then chill to set, then serve. Our banana pudding won't keep for more than a day or two, so plan to eat it quickly. Adding whipped cream on top is optional and can be added when served. For a twist make the banana pudding using chocolate pudding instead of the vanilla.

We never mashed the banana up and mixed it into the pudding. We slice the bananas into little round pieces. Graham cracker crust or vanilla wafers lined up on the bottom of the bottom of the pan. Then layer of pudding, layer of banans, layer of banana, repeated until all pudding and bananas are gone. Ending with layer of cookies (we always used regular sized Nilla Wafers) on top. You make it a day ahead because the flavors need to meld together to make it really good. When you ate ready to experiment, use chocolate pudding instead of vanilla. Bananas and chocolate are wonderful.

First of all, let me say your daughter is terminally CUTE! Your recipes for banana pudding are different from the simpler one I had as a child in Alabama, but variations are to be expected. My early recollection of the dish is noe where just straight vanilla pudding was used and the bananas were just moderately ripe. Furthermore there were two layers of regular vanilla wafers and bananas. The top was another layer of wafers with pudding over the top and NO meringue. However it is made, the general nature of this dish always seems superb to be enjoyed.
