Carp is great. My grandfather use to cook it. super tasty. As soon as he got one, still alive, he'd commandeer the bathtub and swim it in fresh water for 24hrs before butchering it, in order to help remove the muddy water taste. big flakes of flesh, made fantastic fish cakes and soup.
You must have some Polish in your family! Obligatory bathtub (or in our case, rain barrel) swim before the carp was prepped for Christmas Eve dinner! I still remember the year we had a frost (in England), and the rain barrel had a thick layer of ice on top...took my Grandad and Dad 30 minutes to break through the ice!
I had to laugh a little bit at seeing the boys go to Sonny's BBQ. It's a fairly large chain and while the food isn't outstanding, it's not bad either. It's consistent, and along with Cracker Barrell, I do look for it because it's a safe place to eat when I'm on a road trip. But definitely wouldn't class it as a "local" place.
Since these trips are pretty well planned and financed, i wonder if maybe this was kind of a sponsorship type deal, where this was one of the places that offered to have them for the video.
I felt this way when they went to Agave and Rye last video! I live in Cincinnati and I was like "I mean, I personally like A&R but it's not indicative of KY food AT ALL".
Jamie making a TLC joke at the waterfall is exactly what I needed. Also him changing clothes after the horse ranch was too good!! 😭😭 Jamie continues to be my favorite lad haha
Unlike so many of our British friends, you take the time and effort to visit other than NYC and LA. There's just so much more to our nation. Best wishes from Texas!
I was pretty bummed I didn’t get to see you guys live, but man it’s kinda surreal seeing you all practically in my back yard. Loving the series! Cheers! 🥂
This channel pulls in over $60,000/mo from its views alone. They also have sponsors and sell merchandise and other products. It’s always good to see people donating to the less fortunate. These guys didn’t even have the courtesy to recognize your comment and donation.
I only just discovered the Sorted channel last Fall, but I am soooo happy to see the boys touring the USA and trying out some of our foods! I love the old episodes of your visits to New Orleans (I'm partial since I live there), but truly great to watch you experience Southern food for the first time. Keep up the great content!
If you want really outstanding food hit the back roads across America. You will find small mom and pop places that don't look like much, but have the best meals you've ever eaten.
Speaking as an American with southern family, I've absolutely been known to break out the plaid depending on the crowd, nothing wrong with making the right impression Jamie!
@Clarissa Gafoor this actually got me wondering if there is any difference between the two, and though all tartans are plaids, not all plaids are tartans. Plaid is the pattern but tartan refers specifically to the use of a pattern to associate with a family, name, or history. I'm sure you knew this already, but it's very interesting!
@Clarissa Gafoor also a fun fact, a lot of Americans tend to call those kinds of shirts "flannels" because that's the fabric they tend to made of. I didn't use that word because I know it means something different elsewhere 😁
If you’re on a road trip, through rural areas, unfamiliar with the regions weather, and the activities you’ll be experiencing, an change of clothes, in the car, seems smart. Jamie’s action were a good idea. Good call.
OMG finally I've actually eaten at a restaurant that you guys have gone to! Freight House does a great job of highlight a really critical problem in the US -- invasive species. We should all be eating more carp!
I live right on the border of Indiana and Kentucky (Rising Sun and Rabbit Hash are only separated by the Ohio River), and so many of these places I've never heard of, but some of them I have, and it's just so nice to see other people enjoy the beauty of Kentucky. I've said this before, but I stopped watching Sorted many years ago, and have only recently started watching again, but damn did I pick a good time to start back up again! Good job boys!
This series has been SO enjoyable to watch! If you ever make your way to Western New York, I would love to show you boys around to some of our AMAZING food places we have here!!
It's so refreshing to see these guys sharing a single serving instead of each taking a few bites of an entire meal, only to toss the remainder in the trash as soon as the cameras turn off.
Quick wording note for Chef Ben: homely doesn't mean what you think it does in the USA. It has nothing to do with warm hints of home. It means ugly. So to call something homely is an insult, which is clearly not what you meant. I'm glad you gentlemen seem to enjoy your USA trip. Hopefully we'll get to see you again soon.
I hope with this experience that you understand the term "southern cooking" means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. The food in Kentucky is going to be wildly different from the food in South Carolina but both are considered southern cooking. Anyway, I look forward to your continued exploration of great food in America. Don't close the book on BBQ until you taste Memphis sweet though. There's just SO MUCH more for you to experience. Maybe set a longterm soft goal of sampling the food from all 50 states? Enjoy it!
The only way to understand and dispel the stereotypes of the South, is to visit. Thank you guys! We are happy to have open minded people come and learn about us as we are rich with history, both good and bad, and are trying to keep our heritage while moving forward.
@Imelda EVERYONE is the same amount of safe here. It's all the same. You have jerks everywhere, but you also have some really great people too. There are lots of biracial people where I live and I live in a pretty small area. You get what you give. Give kindness and respect and that's most of the time what you get.
Western Kentucky is where the uniquely Kentucky style bbq is, because it's where you find mutton and vinegar dip style sauce. Patti's in Kentucky Lake is one of the most Kentucky restaurants in the state, and a unique place to stop in that Jackson purchase region around Paducah.
i like that as sorted has gone on, while the banter has been very funny, they feel more friendly & open towards each other n overall like a great bunch of friends :]
Everyone has their own standards. I love Bush's baked beans. Captain Ken's is also great. I'd prefer homemade, but my brother doesn't like them so I don't make them.
I live right by the Cumberland Falls! My family has lived there since I was born and it's a great place to take a hike in the warm weather. Wished the boys had seen the Moonbow too!
Love 2:45am when there’s a sorted vid! Especially when it’s a travel episode. Like having a midnight snack with old friends. Jay definitely about time you got the 10minutes time bonus!
It's always interesting to see people being new to eating carp. I think in some European countries it's pretty common. I know in Germany at least, it's a traditional Christmas dish.
Hey, if y'all come back to the USA you should stop by Illinois and try Portillos! You won't be disappointed! I recommend the cheese fries and beef and cheddar croissant! Also of course you have to try a Chicago style hot dog!
I'm a Paducah native and so glad you enjoyed a stop here. Too bad you didn't try Kirchhoff bakery, they have been in business since the 1870s and have fantastic baked goods. Did you know our town was actually named by Clark of Lewis and Clark fame? Lot's of history here and great food.
Kirchhoff was established in 1873 so even if they were closed up for 40 years they were still in business for over 100 years! Plus it doesn't change the fact they are an amazing bakery!
If only you guys could have heard the gasp that just came out of my mouth!Paducah is my hometown, and I live in East Hertfordshire now! Sarah is such an amazing chef! I'm so happy you showed off freight house!
Eating at Sonny's for BBQ is like getting a hamburger at McDonalds. We all eat there, but don't like to admit it. My husband is from Kentucky and we've thought about moving back, I really love that state.
@@trulyjupiter, there isn't one near. But I have. There is a good barbeque place where I live, but when you travel you don't always know where places are, how they will be. Sonny's isn't outstanding but you know exactly what to expect. Same thing applies at McDonalds, I know it will be bad.
I'm incredibly thankful for this series of videos. I just moved down to central Kentucky in November, and have had no idea where to start exploring the state (other than the bourbon trail, but that one is kind of obvious). You all have given me a great ideas for weekend trips to make, and I greatly appreciate it.
@Sorted Food - do you know what kind of carp you ate? (Bighead, Silver, Black, Common?) If you get a chance to come out to Missouri or Illinois you should try to find a place that will take you carp jumping! Silver carp (and to a lesser extent, bighead carp) will jump (HIGH) out of the water at the sound of a boat motor. You can shoot them out of the air with a bow and arrow or catch them out of the air in large landing nets. It's SUPER fun and they are delicious!
I've eaten BBQ from other cultures, but i think i would have to say US BBQ is the best in the world. Close second would be Korean BBQ. But, i have to say, i don't remember ever having bad BBQ. That is, i have had food CALLED BBQ, that was in no way shape or form BBQ. I don't count those. It has to be recognizably BBQ.
News too me that a carp is a top feeder...only time that happens is when it is farmed.......ps..raised koi for almost. 30 years....and yes they feed the same as carp.
Ben's got sexy gams! 😍 Other commenters have said, there is a lot better BBQ out there than Sonny's, but they are ok. If you come through Houston I know some great places here and in Austin
i hope the rest of the tourist boards sponsor a tour of their state i mean, when was the last time we had that much fun watching an ad? Some other channels should really make some notes for their sponsored content
Lmao can't believe they went to Sonny's instead of the numerous other smaller mom n pop joints that easily have better BBQ. Sonny's is super generic with their food, it's a chain restaurant. You want a real feel for southern BBQ you gotta go to the smaller locations, get into the deep south.
My question is - how the hell is Ben keeping his shorts such a bright red??? Is it the same shorts? Or is he buying a new pair instead of washing them?? Wtf
Happy you guys enjoyed our state and food. You went to practically every city I have frequented except my hometown. Old hickory BBQ is definitely a must visit. Sadly you missed Moonlite Bar-B-Q Inn in Owensboro. Mutton and burgoo are absolutely wonderful. I was wondering if you would visit the castle LOL! I remember being fascinated by it when I was a kid but since I moved to Lexington... Oh that old thing haha!
I am absolutely chuffed, as the British would say, to see you guys at Sonny’s BBQ, even if it isn’t the original. Sonny’s started in Gainesville, Florida, my hometown. We still have two locations here and are so proud that people elsewhere are celebrating the same traditions.
This show is so fun, you guys really know how to enjoy yourselves and good food. And proof that all those videos going on about how poor the people living in the UK are is nonsense!
So excited to see you end up in my hometown of Bardstown (bourbon capital of the world)! Kentucky really is an awesome place. And how could you go wrong with bourbon? 😁
Went to Kentucky and only went to the Jim Beam distillery? Went to a Florida, IOW awful, BBQ chain restaurant? (Don't take me wrong Old Hickory is a unique treasure and one of very places where you'll get mutton BBQ but why Sonny's?) You guys had done so well in Charleston and Savannah but this was sad.
I really enjoy seeing you guys enjoy the food of my country and my region. There's a reason that Mississippi is #1 in obesity in the US, we have so much great tasting food. From the coast to the Delta, from donut shops to Michelin Star chefs and every little fruit stand and dive bar between, we just know how to make food taste great!
