The stock Cleveland crank is the strongest part of a Cleveland. You must have been spinning the shit out of it. Hope the rod wasn't hurt too. Keep the great videos coming.

Hi Bros, Steve here in Melb here, i have an old 351 clevo in a 1984 F truck, 4wd lsd front & eaton gen4 lsd rear locker with a split block, damage to No 6 cyl, has a bent intake rod, cylinder split very close to water jacket, though it still drives, with noticible miss, its only ok for moving it around the yard, itle be up for sale soon, ive given up on looking for engines. keep on keepen on.

The same thing with the fel-pro gaskets happened to me. With the 7516 manifold, I could see the gasket sticking out when taking the carb off.

Not cool. Glad for you damage seems minimal. I know you will get it fixed back up with Clevo King attention to detail. I have had the Fel-Pro's do exactly that to me twice very close together and not many miles. Thought at first I was botching the Intake Torque down somehow. About a month ago it did it again. Giving the Edelbrock #7265 Gaskets a try this time. Have a look at them for yourself. Seem to have more material around Ports and the like.

I have never seen a broken Clevo crank. That must have been flawed from the start. Had it ever been cracktested? I have never seen a crank break like that ever. Break through a journal, both main and rod but never through the counterweight. And this is in motoracing as well as heavy trucks. Once saw a grey Holden, Repco head, coasted in running and it sounded real sharp,, it had broken off the flywheel snout. Or about half Chev crank with 3 rods attached at AIR in a Sports Sedan

what more do you want ( apart from a crank that doesn't break) , this engine had cast pistons, stock bottom end, some lovely heavy heads ( who needs alloy??) an as yet unidentified spec cam, and it roasted that r33 like the piece of shit was standing still. It's not that hard to fix this engine, replace crank and go again. You got to wonder about the crank..casting flaw that led to crack that grew? You'd think the bores would split before the crank would fail.
@josephsambrana2211
@josephsambrana2211 3 года назад
OMG, so sorry to hear that. What's the chances of that ever happening. Maybe a bad casting. Do some indept research just to see where things went wrong. I lost a FE block because of oiling issues. I know how you feel to have something like this to happen. But it still ran, that is amazing. Keep up the good work. The thrill lives on. Fords Rock.

Sorry to see this happen. Yeah it’s the first Cleveland crankshaft that I’ve ever seen break. I’ve seen plenty of factory SBC steel and cast crankshafts break, but not a SBF. Have you ordered your new hydraulic roller cam yet? If not, have it custom ground based off of a BBC. Cleveland’s love the fast opening and close rates like a BBC. The Cleveland cylinder heads are basically a BBC design on a 335 series SBF. Good luck on your rebuild. Look forwards to seeing your car back on the road.

Can believe the gasket and I don't know if you have ever tried to use a copper gasket for your intake. But I have never had a issue with one and I have reused the gasket for a few builds. The 4ma crank is the better crank. These motors suffer from poor coolant system flow and pressure. The Windsor motor also suffers from crank breakage at the front snout. This is due to too much temp variation between the front and rear of the engine. You need to treat the brass ring under the thermostat with a brass welch plug and a bleed hole. The inlet manifold seal is fixed by making sure the manifold and head alignment are consistent with no out of angle due to the head being machined too far. The other problem is the thin casting of the block as in stock format the bores flex 9thou at 2000 rpm. Concrete filling the block is an instant 50ftlbs gain. I used a mixture of high temp epoxy and cast iron shavings from a brake lathe. So much more to these engines when treated correctly.

Mr Fathead, no need to ride home to clearly hear the engine during auto destruct. The games played with the clowns between stoplights was an early audible warning that something was going south in the rotating assembly. The familiar Cleveland snap to attention during the throttle hits was sluggish at best. The overall sound also has a heavy metallic pounding that surely has to be felt by the driver. Not to be confused with another clear riff from Metallica that will surely make us all forget about sanity as it loops through the Milky Way as a shadow of Halleys Comet 💫 every 76 years....for eternity 👀. Take another listen. I might be in a first stage acid flashback. But I’m never that fortunate 😉.

my 351 Cleveland revs very high, I don't know why, it shouldnt, it's not that modified, 400 cam, performance pistons, square bore manifold , 6140 holly carb, etc , apparently it has no more than 300hp no less than 250hp so the engine rebuilders stated, but the engine sounds like it can do 8000 rpm, I've never heard it at full revs because it's too much, I've had the engine reving so high while going for some strait line speed on a long road , the engine reving so high it sounded like the incredible hulk blowing on a referees whistle in the back seat, had to be doing like 250 kph, hauling arse, it shoots off great from 100 kph apply only a little bit of pedal and in a couple seconds be climbing over 140 kph and still only at low revs, it's like once you get the momentum up the revs drop way down and when you give it some throttle it takes off and the revs only go up a bit

seen this a few times both ford and chev not related to over reving the bottom end but associated issues in an area not first expected as the failed engines I saw wouldn't do 6500 rpm down hill in 1st gear. the chev let go from distributor neglect just put that to the side for now but hey we're ford people here. to the clevos 1 stolen 51 auto f 100 tired 'ol girl reved enough to drop valve into #1or #5 jaming crank and punching hole in head didn't pull down and didn't get to see all the bits like valve spring shrapnel very tired timing chain hold the chev in your mind for a minute more had a friend with 302 cleavo stock xc black panel van auto coming to work 60 kph zone the whole way motor stopped wouldn't crank but motor wasn't seized moved a little bit put my hand on the crank pulley to turn it over a bit and it was out of square snapped at the #2/6 web made a great door stop, it was only when the replacement motor was fired up in the dark, spark jumping, I learnt the issue dirty dist cap and leads. preignition caused the break bad/dirty cap and leads will cause engines to fire out off sequence or sparks to cross at leads on the cleave the firing order fires 1then 5 dirty cap can track the spark from #1 to #5 with a piston approaching top dead center with a full charge of air/fuel mix waiting for the next spark a disaster in the making at nearly any rpm this was the same issue with the chev despite the timing differences, strongly suspect this was the cause of the effy as well. Always seperate ign leads! So keep oil and dust off them keep the inside of caps clean[ look at the inside of hi energy ignition brands caps many little "walls"to stop dirt and metalised particles from forming tracks to short circuit.] I would like a look at the leads and cap from this motor my money is an ignition jump and preignition caused the break. if you listen to the engine, on one of the "runs" you can hear 4-6 pops in the exhaust. sounds too small and quick to be carb backfire and the engine in other runs revs clean ie no hesitation. have another look and listen
@thclevoking
@thclevoking 3 года назад
It’s 6 and 5 I see the spark jump on and it’s evident with the head gaskets, thanks for the comment mate. Being 90 out when it jumps it is not jumping far it’s the next one along. I turned it to 9000 plus one time too many I initially thought it was a rod bearing but I did have a starter motor seize up a few days before too.

@@thclevoking , Mr Clevo that’s a good general purpose cam, depending on the intended application. I’m a new subscriber in your Cleveland house of fun and still getting up to speed on your preferred approach to Cleveland building. You already know the fine details unique to Clevelands. But typically you can ask 10 builders a Cleveland specific question and get 10 different answers. Obviously they all can’t be right. That’s why sharing accurate information is so important. Especially online where a touch of bull shit can morph and spread into a raging flood of epic bullshit faster than Covid fueled by 100% nitro. Misinformation can turn a pristine collection of expensive Cleveland components into a oily pile of scrap metal that only a recycler would love. But the finished product is something that most people can agree on. Maximum power production delivered reliably and efficiently a quarter mile at a time by the engine that dominated NHRA Sanctioned-GM Biased “Legal” Competition in the States during the seventies. The official record books are heavy with the history of Small Block Cleveland Ford dominance. The Official Rule Books are tattered and torn by the penciled in “Rule of the day “ then erased to suit GM and Mopar parity. LOL.

@thclevoking

4MA is the first cast cranks made, 4mab was the later revision, 351 ARDIAE was the late Aussie cranks. They are not to be confused with Billet steel cranks ford made a handful of for Lemans and Shelby Race cars. The Aussie cast cranks my pick being the third revision, they used more nickel less iron so it’s closer to a cast steel crank and the earlier 4MA and 4MAB is iron heavy making them closer to a cast iron blend.
