Thank you for sharing. I get my stitches out Wednesday. I was in a roll over accident and ended up with a compound fracture of my wrist. I have rod in my hand and arm that will require another surgery in a couple of months to be removed . I feel for every one of you going through this right now. It’s nice to know that your not alone.
thanks for sharing, I also broke my distal radius and threw out my back, its been very difficult to position myself and get a good nights rest. Best of luck to us both. 😊
My wrist SX was due to Severe Arthritis. 3 bones removed, the next row was fused. It's been 5 days since my cast was removed. I'm my own PT. YOU, sir, have been (by far) the Greatest video I came across ~ (so much information you explained what happen, A to Z), because, You actually went through this experience. Every area you mentioned, was ME!!! I MAY make bread dough to squeeze/knead (then make buns). But I wanted to tell you, "Thank You".... virtual hug ((❤️)). I am now 1/8 way w/movement... looking forward to 100% Full Motion. EXCELLENT VIDEO! I hope you see this. 👍😊👍😊👍
I'm so happy this video was helpful. I love your idea of making dough to squeeze and kneed. That will really strengthen your hands and wrist. You'll get through this and get stronger and stronger.
Thank you Mike, your story has helped me after I broke my wrist. When you said that the pain was burning I really could recognize that feeling. I took my stitches yesterday and now only have a bandage. Pain an the burning feeling is still there. Can't move my thumb much. I have been doing the exercises you described in the video sins having the surgery. On Thuesday I start with the FT. Tina from Sweden
Yes, I know exactly what you mean. My thumb wouldn't move at all. I was grateful my PT shared exercises to help force my thumb to move and eventually got all my mobility back. It just took time and I practiced my exercises as often as I could -- especially when watching television. I wish you a quick recovery. You will get stronger.
I fractured my distal radius and ulna styloid. Had ORIF on DR. No pain during daytime. At night all the witches come out and that ulna hurts like a !$#!. Not taking any pain killers. Worked hard on moving those fingers and they are moving normal now.
Thank you for sharing. I just had distal radius surgery last month July. I'm eager to get my full range of motion so I can do push ups again. Looking forward to your follow up video.
I'll post an update next week with the exercises that my PT had me do. I began doing wall pushups about two months after surgery. I had to wait for approval from my doctor. I'm now able to do pushups when my knees are on the ground -- and can do assisted bar dips. I'm getting stronger, but it's still painful. We'll get through this.
@@R_Drizzle Yeah, my fingers were very swollen in the beginning. My doctor encouraged me to keep moving my fingers (and trying to make a fist). I kept practicing moving all my fingers over-and-over again. I don't see any swelling now. I'll show you what I've been doing and progress in the next video.
Thanks for sharing your story. I fractured my left and right radius. I was trimming a large tree and a large branch knocked me off the ladder, about 8 feet high. Its been two months since surgery on my left arm (July 20). Im going to physical therapy and the swelling is finally beginning to diminish on my left hand. I cannot make a fist though but that is also improving. It has been a slower process than I thought would be. Hopefully return to work on light duty status.
Thanks for this video. I go for surgery in two days for the same surgery. Knowing what to expect is helpful. I fell 10 days ago. Will watch part two after Monday.
I believe not getting cast sweaty is a key to not itching.. it was, for me. During very hot summer. Looking forward to more videos on hand and wrist. But I can see by part 2, you're moving much better.
Yeah, I was trying to be very careful not to sweat especially when riding a stationary bike. If I started to feel warm in my cast, I would stop to cool off and then start riding again slowly. I was so excited to move to a splint that I could take off when exercising.
@@MichaelDelgado I can only take my spint off, four times a day, for physio. Or sitting on couch and not walking. Or bath, shower. It is good to put it in water 😁
I just had almost the same surgery on July 1st… I fell on a mountain and broke my radius, ulna, carpals, and my pinky. A plate and 9 screws to put the pieces of my radius back together…it’s definitely the most painful experience I’ve ever endured
Oh, I'm so sorry to hear this. That sounds like a brutal crash. These fractures are super painful and recovery takes a while. I've been walking every day and just started using a stationary bike at the gym. Feels so good to start exercising again. I start physical therapy in a few weeks. I hope you start feeling better soon. I'm feeling so much better (5 weeks later).
After physical therapy and the healing process I’m able to bear about 75% of my weight on it so that is definitely a good sign, I find now that it’s only an issue if I overuse that hand or if there is really heavy rain coming.
@@kateguillemette5948 That's fantastic news. 75% is a huge milestone. Sounds like you've been doing a lot of wrist exercises for mobility and strengthening. Awesome work.
Just discovered you channel. My wrist is one of three different breaks on my body from a car pulling out in front of me on my motorcycle. I’m 5 weeks post surgery, the stiffness is insane, can’t make a fist yet but working on PT 🤙🏻
I recently had wrist surgery for a fractured displaced scaphoid. My fingers were just like yours. Swollen and hard to bend and painful down into the wrist to move my fingers. Well, i found out that there are no muscles in your fingers. Finger movement is all controlled by muscles in your wrist and forearm. No wonder its hard after a wrist injury! As far as sweating under the cast, it was in the triple digits when i had mine. My arm sweated sitting still!
Micheal when did you start using a silicone scar sheet on your surgical wound? Is it normal to feel some stinging around the wound. It has been over 2 weeks post op. The scar is dry and clean with no signs of infection but it's just this sensitivity that I feel there every now and then.
I had a lot of sensitivity at the beginning and it would hurt sometimes (especially if my dog was licking my wrist). The sensitivity eventually went away -- but it lasted about a year or so.
I currently have a fractured, scaphoid and distal radius in my right hand and a fractured scaphoid in my left hand I had the surgery about a week and a half ago currently have a external fixator and two screws. I have my two week appointment in about four days.
I'm so sorry. It's extremely painful (even with pain meds). It's also very difficult to sleep. I think I only slept an hour here and there during the first week. Please take care of yourself and try to get as relaxed as possible. I put ice packs around my fingers and cast to cool down my wrist, which helped me feel a bit better in the beginning. My arm felt like it was on fire. Once I was able, I went to my local gym to soak in a jacuzzi and pool with my arm resting outside on a towel. It helped me relax a lot. You'll get through this and the pain will subside. Keep your doctor updated on pain levels. The first days after surgery are the most painful.
@@superpoacher6711 I spent a lot of time on the stationary bike during my recovery. I also did a variety of leg exercises, but I was mainly focused on cardio. My doctor just told me to avoid sweating while my wound was healing to avoid infection. Once I got the stitches removed (and removable brace), I got the okay to sweat. So happy to hear the pain is reducing. Take care. :)
Hi .. as you are talking about working out.. I need your opinion please.. I'm 6 months since my surgery . Able to perform all the regular chores, which doesn't involve strong reflex. The flexion and extension is not as earlier. Still can't lift weights, not able to perform push-ups too. Am just worried, if I would be able to ever do them. When should I try hitting the gym. Any of your learnings would be helpful. Thanks in advance..
actually there is a way to heal broken or distorted or wrongly placed wrist easily and perfectly without surgery , if within even 2-3 months after wrist break. affiliated hospital of inner mongolia university for nationalies in Tongliao city , Inner Mongolia heals it miraculously . they rebreak and put the bones in right place without problems, they use special technique to do that and it works fantastically and unbelievably . it is sad ppl dont know abt it and go to have horrible wrist surgeries, when still casting can work . only few ppl know abt this hospital and only few lucky ppl can benefit it
Nice video. I’m just a little worse off then you. I broke both wrist and fractured my pelvis on 9/19/21 (BMX accident) needed distal radius surgery just like yours on the right. Plate screws the same as yours. Left, just basic fracture no surgery needed. Same for pelvis. My swelling was bad for the first 12 hours. Elevating the wrist helped that. I’m going into my 4th week. Already got my cast replaced with shorter half casts. The surgery wrist actually has a Exos hard brace cast that is removable. Check it out on RU-vid it’s amazing. I’m off to watch your part 2 video. 👍👍💪💪
I just schedule surgery for open reduction internal fixation of scaphoid non-union with distal radiation bone graft. I am feeling very depressed and anxious after reading up on the surgery. I just had foot surgery in January and I thought that was tough but not being able to use my left foot but not being able to use my right hand is going to be very very difficult for me. I am so nervous about the pain and never being able to use my hand again. I am a computer programmer. I type 130 words per minute. I feel like my whole life just got ripped up.
So sorry to hear about what you're going through. I don't know what's involved in your surgery, but it sounds like recovery will be painful. I was in a ton of pain during the first month and couldn't sleep much. I tried to walk as much as I could just to be somewhat active. Walking outside also helps me feel better. The nights were the most painful for some reason. As you know, it's tough to get comfortable when you're in so much pain and can't get into a comfortable sleeping position. I had to sleep with my arm in foam block to keep it upright after surgery to help reduce swelling. My doctor wanted me to practice moving my fingers and making a fist after surgery to reduce inflammation. I couldn't move my fingers after surgery. I had to use my other hand to force my fingers to move. I started getting some movement a few days after surgery. I was finally able to move all my fingers and make a fist after two months. I was practicing every few hours. It was too painful for me to attempt typing until after the cast came off. Please know that it takes time for the body to recover and to focus on the small wins along the way. I was celebrating when I got my pinky to move and was finally able to hold a tennis ball. I'm going to record an updated video to show you what exercises I've been doing.
@@webscrapeco I had this same operation in July. I've been for several hospital checkups since which haven't shown the bone healing which has been hugely frustrating. I've got another checkup tomorrow morning so am extremely anxious and nervous for what the latest update brings 😬
@@tomsmith9966 Did your doctor give you the ultrasound bone healing system? How old are you? How long ago was the accident? I am using ultrasound, i'm 27, and my accident was 8 years ago.
You got me scared for how much pain I’ll be post surgery. At least you saying as it is. I am waiting for the call to confirm the surgery date that was to be scheduled for tomorrow and I am scared as can be for the surgery and the post op pain. I had my injury almost 2 weeks ago now and the bone apparently moved out of place thus the needed surgery to put a plate at the distal radius wrist area. How are you doing now, what seems to be 9 months? Thanks for posting your comments I feel less alone. I will follow your other videos to know what to do post op.
Thankyou for sharing,I broke my wrist April 1 it was my distal Radius I hope I can get out off soon and get a Removel brace.I could not sleep either the first few days it was terrible and it’s my dominant hand it’s hard.I hope you’re doing well.🙂
I broke my dominant hand scaphoid in half 17 years ago surgery 15 years ago. Now 32 and dealt with pain and discomfort my entire adult life. Have 90% mobility back on good days. Good luck on your recovery journey just make sure you're doing everything the doctor says or you WILL regret it down the road. Mine is still non union just held together by a screw. Such a bullshit bone.
@@user-dd1bb4tw4r Thankyou so much I be hard headed but he says don’t do anything with that hand only move my fingers, no lifting no nothing I feel a lot better after 2 weeks and tried to see if I could do something with it but I’m done, thankyou so much for the warning,I got 2 more weeks to go to see if I can get out the cast and get in a removeable cast.I’m so sorry you’re wrist is non union s hope that maybe something else can be done.Did you do things you shouldn’t did that the told you not too?
@@rebekahpowers1595 you're fortunate they saw the break. I was not as lucky. After nearly 2 years the doctor told me "I hate to tell you this being so young but your wrist will never be normal again." Shit happens. I don't want anyone else going through what I have.
I've had surgery. I'm a violinist. It's my job. A very bad break. I'm full of pins and plates. I had the nerve block and it was a horrific experience. Dead arm.

@@kerriekeller943 They operated on it within 2 days. Though it looks normal it's not the same. Took a year to adjust. It was like retraining. It's the luck of the draw but I'm sure you'll be alright in time. Sorry to hear of your accident Take care.
Hi Mike, thanks for sharing your recovery experience .hopefully you're doing well now. I sustained the same injury- diastal radius bone fracture and gone through the similar surgery. One question: How long did it take for you to sleep comfortably and get back to work?
It took about a month before I could start to sleep through the night. As you know, it's difficult to sleep with a swollen arm that needs to be upright all night. I went back to work a week after surgery, but could only type with my right hand. I was a bit slow typing and moving my mouse with my left hand because I'm right handed.
I have a distal radius fracture also . I had surgery on Valentine’s Day 2/14/22. I’m 6 days post op. I can’t sleep and I have so much pain today . I feel for all of us ? How are you now?
Yes, the pain is brutal for the first month. I couldn't sleep much for the first two weeks. The pain will pass and you'll start feeling better. I'm pain free now and grateful to have full mobility back (even though I have arthritis). My doctor and PT told me to keep exercising to improve blood flow in my hands and fingers, which will help reduce any arthritis pain in the future. You'll get through this and the pain will reduce.
Hi. To get a better understanding and to be able to compare your experience with mine a little bit I'd be really happy if you could share these detail with me 🙏 Was your fracture intra-articular AND/OR comminuted?
@@MichaelDelgado intra-articular means that the fracture line/lines itself extended up into the joint/cartilage area of the wrist, basicslly into the head surface of the radius where it meets the lunate and scaphoid bones, also, comminuted means there were multiple bone fragments, more than one pieces
How much pain medication did you take? I am being mistreated it’s unfair I’m in a lot of pain and they’re literally belittling me and making me beg for more. It’s making me angry
I wish my worthless doctor had told me I should be trying to make a fist every waking hour. After three weeks of therapy I can finally hold a ball. I really appreciated your video.
Same thing happened with me...had surgery like 5 weeks ago...but i can't move my hand sideways... did you also have this problem? And do you have any solution for this
You mentioned that you had some burning pain like it was on fire. Others have written comments that they developed nerve pain nerve symptoms nerve damage. Did yours go away and how long did the burning on fire feeling last. I am two weeks after the surgery the same type of surgery as yours plate and screws thank you
I've managed to break both of these bones (scaphoid and distal radius) at the same time which is apparently very rare. Not sure yet what will be done to fix it, I'm in a cast right now. Very little pain with either fracture.
Have you seen a physical therapist to help you get movement back? In the beginning, my fingers were very stiff and I had to manually use my other hand to get my fingers to move. I had to be patient. Once I started physical therapy, they would wrap my hand, fingers, and wrist in a big moist heating pad for 20 minutes to warm up my hand. That helped reduce pain and made my hand more relaxed. I would sometimes soak my hand in a hot bowl of water or wrap it in a heating pad before practicing my exercises. Stay positive and keep focusing on getting some movement back. Focus on small wins each week.
I'm very sorry to hear. Healing takes time for each of us -- and depends on the injury and type of surgery. Has your doctor given you any advice yet? My doctor had me move my fingers with my other hand to get movement going. My fingers and hand were very swollen in the beginning and that limited my mobility. It also took a few months before i could move all my fingers like before.
Did you recover full wrist movement after the scaphoid fracture? I had a crash on my motorcycle which left me with both hands broken -right hand scaphoid being the worst as it requires surgery- and tomorrow is my appointment to see when it'll be. I don't know if local anesthesia will be enough, recovery time, if I'll have to use a cast on both hands and how long recovery will be. I just hope that by the time summer holidays are over, I'll get to go back to work.
I'm so sorry to hear about your crash and breaking both hands. That's brutal. Yes, I had a cast on for about 8 weeks after surgery. I was able to start moving my fingers almost immediately after that surgery and regained strength a few months after the cast came off. I did have pain whenever I went to the gym and used weights, but the pain eventually went away. I'm grateful for a smooth recovery. It just takes time and patience to get through the pain and rebuild strength again. I spent a lot of time in the gym using the stationary bike to keep active. It helped me feel better. I wish you a quick recovery. Take care of yourself. You'll get through this.
@@MichaelDelgado thank you!! From what I've talked with the doc, it should be an overall quick surgery (subcutaneous, so minimal incision). Let's hope I can get this over with quickly. I'm glad you are doing well too!
