This is the best view of the actual storm coming in and hitting, not footage of the aftermath. We headed up to our rooftop, facing south/southwest, not knowing about the Tornado Warning, and saw menacing clouds coming from the south, south west. There was constant thunder, and we have heard people describe tornados as sounding like a train coming, and thats what we heard.... The thunder and lightening was constant, and there was an eerie feeling all around us. Once the rain came, we fled to our apartment and filmed out the window. 80 mph gusts rip through the trees. It was awesome and the true sense of the word. Check out my new website: www.kabelis.com/wp

The one thing I've noticed all my life is during a thunderstorm, if the sky turns an ominous shade of green take immediate cover. This is not always a sign of a tornado but is a strong indicator of damaging winds. Hail stones about size of dime is normal during severe thunderstorm but if they reach size of quarter or larger during severe storm, the potential of tornado is great. Out in the country we don't have the weather channel or tornado sirens. You look at cloud type, color of sky, and size of hail to determine whether to get inside storm shelter. Last year I got hit by micro-burst of 125-mph or greater winds with no warning and could not get to the shelter. I hugged a wooden utility pole and held on tightly until danger passed. That was scary as hell.

James Barrow youre right if the sky goes green get inside immediately. microbursts can form within minutes they just come without no warning sometimes can be more dangerous than a small tornado since they can reach higher speeds and blow in a straight line.

Michael Jagger the scary green color normally happens when large hail mixes with heavy rain and the sun shining through it in the background. The color is more common in storms in the afternoon because of the angle of the sun
@kingjames8283
@kingjames8283 9 лет назад
Jack Samual that is very true and is fact. I have also noticed that when this "ominous green" color appears which means "heavy hail" that the potential of severe weather with damaging winds and a possible tornado is soon to follow. For that reason I always tell people that when you see a green sky during a thunderstorm, run for cover or immediately get inside your storm shelter.

The green color can only be seen in a certain distance. When its close enough, the color disappears, so its not always hail

It's the hallmark of tornadic activity, dude. Sometimes just hail, sure, but if you live in the midwest you know it likely means a twister is coming.

That's how I knew to seek shelter during this storm! I'm from Texas/Missouri, and was walking home from work when it got green and I knew (even though I was in Brooklyn) that there had to be a tornado or really severe storm coming. I ran the whole way home and BARELY made it off the street. The door was hard to open. There were trees down all over my neighborhood, so I can't imagine how terrifying it would've been if I didn't make it in!
@gseric4721

Same, I remember when my family and I lived in the city and saw the green tint in the sky. There was a strange calm in the air, and then the hail started falling, and then came the swirling wind. After that the clouds cleared and a double rainbow spread across the sky. I was 13 but I still remember that. One of the most surreal things I've ever witnessed...

NYC people, I love ya so I'm going to help you if at all possible. I'm in northeast Texas where this happens often. I know y'all (you guys) don't get this type of weather all the time, but it happens and it bothers me that so many of you are walking around outside because of the way you commute. If you see this greenish hue approaching, get the fuck into a strong structure. These things can suck the face right off of store fronts, so don't stand near the front. If you see the leaves on trees look like they're curling upward and the bottom side looks brighter than normal, get the fuck outta there. If you feel the barometric pressure changing throughout your body as the storm approaches, get the fuck outta there. If the hair on your body begins to lift or feel a static charge, maybe the hair on your neck tingles the skin, run immediately and stay away from metal or pole type structures and trees. They say don't go under overpasses, but if you're near the subway or a tunnel, get in it.
@gbshaw107
@gbshaw107 7 лет назад
mallarysangel you're right on that. I saw this coming in on the expressway outside of Brooklyn, and it looked intense. I do electrical work in and around the city, and have had to repair plenty due to these. But us New Yorkers aren't hit by much of this sort of severe weather, so when we are, were mesmerized..lol
@mallarysangel
@mallarysangel 7 лет назад
gbshaw107 -- That's kind of what I figured, that you're mesmerized. I've been through so many of them, and I've experienced direct contact with three. Lost part of a roof to one. Feeling your house move is a wild experience. One of the tornados occurred when I was in a rice field at night and had nowhere to go. I was younger and poaching at the time. I've since grown more compassionate towards animals. I finally made my way to some trees hundreds of yards away just as it began lifting me off the ground. The lightning allowed us to see it, and then we saw it rip up a bunch of signs, like the tall McDonald's sign in the distance. Seeing it approaching probably saved our lives. I was very, very scared I was about to die, but I held onto that tree with all I had, and the tree survived. Then the hail came in blowing sideways. That was the worst part actually as it hurt badly and caused bruising and lumps all over one side of my body and my hands because I was covering my head with them. I had two friends with me that found a ditch, but we were all beat to shit. It used to seem like NYC had become a safe place to live as the late 90s approached, but then TWA 800, 9/11, the plane crash in Queens, the Hudson River crash, Sandy, etc... Y'all needed the Hudson River thing though. I would imagine it gave people hope. I have never been there but I plan to visit. I fully expect my accent and customs to scream "tourist", but I can adapt quickly. I'd like to see if I could find a place to buy outside the metropolitan area, but first I need to visit and see if I'm still motivated afterwards. I'm Native American, so I enjoy communicating with nature. I imagine if I'm ever able, I'd still want some spacious living. It seems like Great Neck has homes with a couple or few acres, but I doubt I'll ever feel like spending that much money on a vacation space. I can't afford it now anyway, but I intend to have that ability.

Dear mallarysangel, Fortunately NYC has more than 400 INDIVIDUAL subway entrances in 4 boroughs. I'm talking the stairwells down into the system (not the number of platforms that are underground). Some of the platforms are more than 50 feet below ground and can fit more than 300 people each platform. If a Cat 5 hurricane was to hit NYC many buildings would be damaged beyond repairability. Most of the subway platforms more than 30 feet below ground would still be intact and livable for weeks at a time (that is if they don't get flooded out with water). I remember Superstorm Sandy was only a cat 3 storm and a few of the tunnels that travel under the rivers between one borough and another were flooded for a number of hours. Many of the platforms that were more than 300 yards away from any river were still fine 12 hours after it passed.
@eastmanediting7027
@eastmanediting7027 5 лет назад
Yes! I had just come up out of the subway and was walking home when the sky turned green. Being from tornado alley, I KNEW what that meant. And then the hair stood up on my neck and the air just had a heavy feeling. It's a feeling you can't forget, and luckily, I had experienced it enough times to know that this was no joke. I sprinted home and barely made it. (All the buildings I passed were not open or were super shallow storefronts with no protection, so I had no choice but to try to make it into my basement apartment a block away...) It was one of the most terrifying moments of my life, but would've been much worse if I didn't know to GTFO!

We get this type of weather fairly often actually (not sure why that other guy said we don’t); people just don’t really record it. For whatever reason, we’re also more likely to get microbursts in the late spring to early fall. Tornadoes are rare but we are accustomed to weaker hurricane force winds due to the many tropical storms that make their way up here from the Atlantic and Florida. Sandy in particular did a real number on us.

I am a professional storm spotter anytime you see a greenish tint to the sky like you filmed here that usually means a severe microburst or tornado quite rare to see in Brooklyn but as you seen it can happen.
@Saiune

While this could've been a Microburst, there was a tornado warning, because I was there when it happened. but last time I had a Microburst, there was no tornado warning I believe just a severe thunderstorm warning. But since the National Weather Service confirmed this as a tornado, I remember it being a rainwrapped tornado.(they didn't say that exactly, but I had another experience with a rainwrapped tornado and it was a bit identical) but this was still terrifying.

I remember this. I will never forget it. I was looking out the window into all of the backyards and everything was oddly still. I started to see clouds moving in fast. Then boom a thick layer of what I thought was a green cloud all the way down to the ground. I was spooked! I then realized it was similar to a tornado. Looking at the reports from that day and they showed it was a huge C shape storm that comes in fast and extremely strong. Crazy stuff lol

I remember this so well. I left work @ 5pm & remember how unusually warm & humid it was outside, & I remember the green sky that was also very unusual. I was on the B52 bus on my way home when it hit! The bus driver had to slow down & you could hear the tree branches hitting the top of the bus. When the bus made a turn I saw the garage door of a house bent in. When the B52 bus tried to make a turn onto Gates Ave, the driver had to detour because trees were all over the road. Just as fast as the storm came it left just as fast. It did so much damage in such a short amount of time. When the report came on the news they said it was a F0 Gale tornado that hit Brooklyn and a micro burst that hit in Queens.

Im a storm spotter with NOAA this was a severe microburst from a very intense supercell thunderstorm which one like this is rare to this area, wind gusts of 75-90 mph was reported even reports of rain wrapped small tornadoes EF0-EF1 were present with this storm as evident of the green colored sky as storm approached, and again quite rare for this area more likely in Midwestern states.

Same. Grew up in Herrin, was living right there in Brooklyn NY when this one hit. I could tell quicky afterward that it was a tornado because there were roads where the top 1/3 of trees were broken off and you could see they'd been twisted, then it was perfect in the next yard, no damage at all.

Watching all of these storm and tornado videos I realized that if the sky turns greenish or blue-ish there's either a tornado going to happen soon or the storm will be really severe and it's best to take shelter. Anyone can confirm? These kinds of storms don't happen in my town, so I'm not sure, all the information I've gotten is from videos and research, not personal experience

I've seen that green cloud before here in Indiana. My girlfriend at the time nicknamed it "green sky." It's so strange when you see it, because it moves at you lower and much faster than the clouds above. And then when it hits BAM! just a wall of wind. I actually witnessed the furniture on my front porch basically levitate, spin around on the rug they were sitting on and hit the side of the porch. Took siding off of houses and trees down, just a crazy amount of damage. That was probably 8 years ago when it happened, but watching this video and seeing that menacing green color brought it back.

That's definitely a tornado! In the first part of the video as the tornado is moving across to the right you can see the rotation around the edge of the moving mass. Just an observation, but this looks like a macroburst rather than a microburst. Microbursts are usually much smaller (look at videos of rain bombs). This takes up nearly the entire cell which would be a macroburst. Once established that outflow starts literally dragging the storm with it. These storm cells can reach forward speeds of up to 80 mph with winds of up to 150 mph. This not only gives these storms (including even down to individual cells) a bow shape, but the forward speed gives you very little time to reach shelter (or at least the lee side of a building). Yes they usually do look like a wall coming in, because they literally are. It's an extremely dense and intense wall of rain and hail driving these storms. Overall an extremely dangerous yet very impressive display of nature's power.

I have lived in Kansas since 1988 and here we would call that storm: Rain. lol In a real tornado nobody stays outside unless they don't want to live. Hell, its even terrifying hiding in a finished basement especially when the power goes out during tornado warnings. Lightning can travel at least 10 miles, and this guy is in a prime spot to become a crispy critter acting as a lightning rod.

Really good footage! The green indicates a hail 'core' within the storm. Most storms with hail don't produce tornadoes, although some do.. A supercell is a type of thunderstorm, not a tornado, just to clarify. (I live in Kansas City)

It looks like a huge wedge tornado. What was it rated? F4 or 5? Because if it was a tornado, it was massive!

I'm from Chicago, and green skies always mean big trouble coming in fast. Lake Michigan gives some protection, but that might be changing with climate change.

Just a normal big summer thunderstorm here in New Orleans. We get ones like this every few weeks here. Last Saturday coming home from work, (on foot), I got caught by one. 8" of water in the street, sheets pouring off buildings... just put the poncho, open the umbrella and aim it into the wind, walk down the middle of the street (the high ground), and slog on home carrying the groceries.

That green hue is always a tell tale sign of a severe storm approaching. No evidence of a tornado in this video though. Just typical high winds from a squall line micro burst.

@Purple558 green clouds typically means a heavy hail producing storm. the same physic's that produce hail, can also form tornadoes. however just because there is green tinted clouds, and hail. does not mean there will always be a tornado. honestly i'm just surprised that everyone that has posted a video of themselves filming this storm on their roof did not get struck by lightning.

@mysuperliam Hail shafts or very heavy rain accompanied with hail tinges the sky color to give that greenish appearance

Great place to stand during heavy winds and a potential incoming tornado...on the ROOF! But it was worth risking your life and limb for my 6 minutes of entertainment. Could you film oncoming trains next?

Being a native of Boston and the East Coast, thunderstorms like this are VERY rare in the Northeast. Living in Texas now not everyone Grew up in tenbucktwo Texas or Kansas where this happens frequently. Those slabs of conrete next to the streets are sidewalks. Not ditches.

Matyme is right, hail at times is a sign of a possible tornado from what I've heard. But the green sky, is a huge sign of a tornado.

I was outside in a ditch for the Andover Ks tornado over 20 years ago. Didn't have a choice, lived in 2nd story apartment so we had to go under bridge in runoff ditch as it moved passed us just having hit the Air Force Base 1/4 mile down on rock road in Wichita, KS. Not fun times.

The greenish "wall" wasn't the funnel proper, it was the rain wrapped around the funnel. Looks like it was at the lower end of the scale, EF1 or 2, fast-moving, and short lived. Doesn't make it any less of a "real" tornado, especially hitting a place that doesn't get many tornadoes.

No matter how 'cool' it may be, a green hue to the sky = get your ass to a secure area, preferably in a basement, tornado shelter, or the strongest room in the building you're in away from windows and doors.
