Brother J’s distinct voice tone was definitely one of the elements that made X Clan so special, and it’s an often overlooked feature of successful MC’s. His father was a Freemason, and he was only 19 when he wrote that first album. It opened my awareness as a white kid, just as much as NWA, and Ice Cubes early records.

X Clan was that deal back in the late 80's early 90's. Don't hear much homage paid to that crew but it definitely should be. As I always say, Tupac and Biggie are great and much loved but when they hit their prime in mid 90's it signalled the end of the diverse golden years of Hip Hop. Much respect Brother J and "heed the word of the brother, with a key......"

Ironic that the labels went and supported the more gangster rap style....it left a huge hole in rap to other expressions. But knowing black history and the days of minstrel show, elements of white America are comfortable with seeing rappers and by extension black folk in a negative light, almost dehumanizing tbh. It helps provide justification for supporting the status quo and anyone against thar movement must be silenced or simply not mentioned 🤔
@mumm-ratheeverliving2288
@mumm-ratheeverliving2288 2 года назад
@@jman1562001 no doubt. The age of the intelligent black man was shut down quick. It continues today with the dumbing down and push to the conversion of Hip Hop into Pop music. It ain't nothing Hip Hop about a black man in a wedding dress or black men in booty shorts giving Satan a lap dance. Hip Hop is our urban culture, youngsters need to be taught this mess ain't okay and need not to be allowed to happen. Off my soapbox now brotha, LoL. Yeah, gangster rap (though it does have it place) was promoted to dumb down our intelligent cultural expression, imo.

@@mumm-ratheeverliving2288 no brother we building....if people can troll online all day we can build lol....rap is the new hustle and I accept that it's become that. It's not hiphop imo...and the leaders accepted the influx of other influences...I just make a clear distinction between it being a part of black culture and not the totality. The irony now is watching popular rappers now how have to denounce hedonistic ways when they have seeds but not fully owing up to being a part of the self destruction

@@EELLISON2012, I barely understand your comment. I think it is obvious he was not talking about what you typed so why did you need to point that out? Are you deflecting the conversation for a narrative against gangster rap? Even in conscience rap message content, rappers have talked about drugs, guns, materialism, and violence. Brother J has had raps about violence, for example, about slapping the rap group, 3rd Base.
