Today's video covers a really cool project called Browservice. It lets you browse modern websites on an old computer running an old web browser. It does this by creating a proxy server on a Linux machine, which can be connected to by the old computer.

You could probably run a 3.5mm to 3.5mm audio cable from the Pi's output to the line-in port of the Win98SE PC to play the audio natively on that PC.

@thetechconspiracy2
@thetechconspiracy2 3 года назад
You could, but you would still have the audio latency issue, and it requires the machines to be fairly close to each other (probably not that big of a concern)
@MaskedGEEK
@MaskedGEEK 3 года назад
@@thetechconspiracy2 I don't think so. When I play with my friends online, I use a Mac to talk to them on Discord while my Windows PC runs the audio through a 3.5mm audio cable to the Mac's line-in port. I then use a free app, funnily enough, called LineIn to pass through the line-in audio to my headphones so I can hear the game and my friends. I do this kind of setup so that if my game crashes, or Windows wonderfully decides it needs to reboot without telling me it's installed "needed" updates, I can still chat to my friends without interruption. If there is lag, it's unperceivable to me. I could be wrong though, audiophiles may notice something I don't. 🤷‍♂️
@thetechconspiracy2
@thetechconspiracy2 3 года назад
@@MaskedGEEK The latency comes from the Pi rendering the video onto a picture, sending it over the network to the computer, and the computer rendering the image. The audio still plays in real time, weather it comes out the speakers attached to the Pi or over a Line In cable, and the video is delayed by potentially several seconds. You would need some way to delay the audio (could probably be done on the Pi with a bit of work) to account for this overhead.

I half expected it to be doing some strange streaming in the background somehow but I didn't imagine it'd be through straight up images on a constant basis. That's a really neat project that helps bring old browsers to life, even if it's more or less emulating what it'd be like natively.

now for my thoughts: i think this one of the most interesting things I've seen done with old browsers! going in, I thought it might've been a compressed video stream being sent over and waiting for mouse button input to be received from a certain pixel, but a set of constantly recieved images does make more sense. still, im surprised at how well it seems to work. great video!

Some of us had our first exposure to the Internet on (among other things) Windows 3.1, which had more than its share of browsers. It would be fun to run good old 16-bit versions of Netscape Navigator Gold 3.04, Communicator 4.08, Opera 3.62, or IE3.03 or IE5 this way for nostalgia sake. I even used telnet software on dial-up to remote into libraries that had Lynx browsers, just so I could capitalize on their higher speed connections, at the expense of the minor latency it took to draw the screen on my end.

@@fotografotimido The way Pihole works is by creating a large domain list and redirect them to a non-existence IP address to block them. So if you really want to automatically redirect to it, you would have to create a large list of the domain name to be redirected to the Browservice. This is assuming that we are able to set a custom DNS server on windows 95/98 because if you configure the DNS redirect on the router then the Browservice will also be using that DNS server thus when you type in the domain name, ill redirect to itself. tl;dr it really impractical to do such a thing and unless you got lots of older systems, it would be best to just set it as the default home page.
