Ever wondered where and how the Rotax engines are made? In October 2022 we got to take a look inside the BRP Rotax Factory that annually build thousands of engines for all types of applications: Snowmobiles, watercraft, all-terrain vehicles, karts and of course aircraft engines. Learn more about the origins of BRP Rotax, the different assembly lines, the attention to detail, thorough checks and inspections and see how the different parts and components are created within the factory walls.

And that is what an educated, dedicated, and motivated workforce with a passion for precision looks like. I didn’t see one purple haired, multi-pierced 400 lb waddler in the entire factory. Having owned a Rotax 582 I can vouch for these engines being durable, dependable, and economical to run. Great work. 😁

i know this is for airplanes but here is a little story about a little 12hp rotax 1971 elan skidoo,my mom fell greatly ill at our camp in 1977.and the only way out was with the little elan 12hp.took mom out put her in the sleigh laid her down there and dad and me and my little brother drove her out to the hospital...it was minus 30 below zero..we made it mom was safe.the elan skidoo is long gone but the rotax motor i still have on a shelf...thank you for making a good little engine. without it mom would not be hear,

I have seen another tour, but mainly it focused on the oval assembly table for AC engines. This was WAY more comprehensive and really showed the incredible amount of automation and special details like induction hardening only parts of the crankshaft. Good view into the amount of engineering and commitment to infrastructure to build these engines. Thank you for the tour.

Excellent example of precision engineering and I would like to take a tour myself at some point. I can see why these power units last and wear so well. The testing and final assembly stages combined with robotic inputs and tolerance checking are amazing. I was wondering who constructs the frames and body parts for the engines to be fitted for the Can Am bikes which is also a great quality product. A big thank you to the team at Rotex. 👍

I am paranoid about Rotax engines after a friend was killed piloting his small copter that had that engine in it. He was one of the best pilots of those machines around. It failed shortly after take-off and he wasn't able to clear some power lines at the altitude. Almost made it. So sad. He was a great guy. Lots of stories out there if anybody does a search for Allen Barklage. Adventure filled life he had. Kind of like you Bambi.

On a positive note, I own a Spyder RT Limited with the 1330cc engine, but I wish the engine was 1500cc matched to a 6 or 7 speed automatic transmission. On a negative note, I hate the extensive process that must be accomplished in order to check the oil. There should be a simpler process to accomplish that. Other than that, I love my Spyder and hope to be able to ride it daily over the late spring and summer.

As a Canadian I have believed in supporting BRP by purchasing their products over the years being a Canadian company. However I became hesitant back some 15 years ago when I found out that the Engines where being manufactured by Rotax a division of BRP, with plastic parts for oil delivery systems within them, which over time fail and destroy the engines. These products are not cheap and to have what I referred to as Engineered adolescence, is not what I consider good Corporate ethics.

The Rotax engines are simply the best little engine on the market right now. But I don’t like the monopoly that Rotax are giving Franz Aircraft Engines…. When the dealership went from Lycon to Franz prices went up 30% And when we as a part 145 work shop or Part-M sends a E-mail to Rotax with a specific question to the type certificate holder we get the answer from Franz that is not following the EASA rules! Part-M should always have direct Contact to the type certificate holder and that contact should not be interfered with by a seller! the seller haves economic interest in the outcome of the question!!!!

Excellent. Problem is, everything aviation is price-jacked. Please allow me to be clear: If ROTAX was a bit more safety-customer-safe… they would reduce their aircraft products price, and continue to advance all of their product’s technology. What I mean is… “prove your company products, that may simply meet aviation specs/reliability. just requesting. BRP needs to hire me on a limited short-term basis. They will not be disappointed.
@davidc5027
@davidc5027 4 месяца назад
IMHO Rotax engines are way over-priced. I'm not saying they aren't good engines, I'm saying they are over-priced, and there's a reason other than the engine is designed for airplanes/gyroplanes. Limited competition in this segment of the market. If there was competition in the market, prices wouldn't be so high. For those who might not know.. 140hp engine is 40,000 dollars US. Their new 160 hp engine is 50,000 dollars US. That is for the engine by itself which comes in a crate. Still, they make good reliable engines and that isn't something you can't take away from Rotax.
@danielpomeroy
@danielpomeroy 6 месяцев назад
Very disappointing brp discontinued Evinrude outboard engines. They could have had rotax develop new 4 strokes instead of abandoning the market
@DanFrederiksen
@DanFrederiksen Год назад
Interesting but their prices have grown from greedy to just ridiculous. The 916 which is just the same small engine with a turbo is now 50k$. The simple 912 at 19k$ is also way overpriced. I'm guessing they don't use any different metal, it's the exact same technology they use in all their engines, they are no more reliable, they don't pay for your plane when the engine fails, they just massively overcharge for their small simple engines. Rotax is not a small niche manufacturer of extreme custom engines, they are quite conventional low tech engines in great volume. For comparison VW's quite advanced turbo diesel 4 cylinder engines are around 2k€, a Nissan Versa 4 door sedan with aircon and of course an engine with a more complex gearbox costs 15k$ for the entire car. There is just zero justification for 50k for these engines. If Rotax doesn't change their greedy policy I sincerely hope someone outcompetes them. They are such a hindrance for aviation. GA is a disgrace because of obtuse greedy players like Rotax.
@Captndarty
@Captndarty Год назад
Doesn’t matter what you are I agree on with regards to pricing value. They keep selling them because people keep buying them and if you don’t like get a better job. And for God sake, nobody cares about your opinion you keep trolling Rotax videos to spew your negativity. Sounds like you’re just jealous.
@BrilliantDesignOnline
@BrilliantDesignOnline Год назад
Sadly, I am inclined to agree. The problem is no competition of scale for the most part. But, this tour gave me more overall confidence in the engineering, but the prices are astronomical, especially for the average homebuilder.
@DanFrederiksen
@DanFrederiksen Год назад
@@BrilliantDesignOnline yeah. we can use their own prices against them, they have a rotax 900 engine series for jet skis that's comparable to the 912-915 series. The version with similar power to 912 seems to cost under 3000$. Seadoo jetskis seem to retail in the 7-8k$ with a rotax 900 engine. Imagine if planes with a 912 cost 8k. There is also a turbo version of the 900 with similar power to 915, I couldn't find a direct price but from the jetski price I'd estimate 5-6k$ from Rotax. Roughly 10x cheaper than 916. sigh
