My mom and sisters grew up with Bruce, and worked at Federici’s. Met him a few times there, cause he never forgot where he came from. After all the success, he still came back and remembered all their names.
I (foolishly) thought that I had a grip on how astounding Bruce's songwriting really was.... Then I stumbled upon this jewel... The man is one of the greatest...
This album is part of my life. It was my favourite album when my mother died, so it mingles in my mind. This and Bobby Jean are my favourites. I'll die loving these songs.
"Now I swing a sledgehammer on a railroad gang, knocking down them cross-ties working in the rain." Damn what a good story of the hardworking lonely man whose wife left him by seconds.
When i was a senior in high school, he revived a lot of buzz to a newer audience with the release of the live 75-85 box sets. It was 1999, we would cut class at the end of senior year and listen to this music in the sun. At the beach or a buddy's backyard I could cry at the joy this music has brought me over the years Jersey shore...a beautiful place to grow up
@Joseph Merkling He works 3 jobs in this song. First he works for the lumber yard, but he gets laid off. He starts working at the Car Wash and his wife leaves him, presumably due to his depression. He then has his hallucination/dream episode where he thinks she wants him back, only to hear that lonely whistle again like when she left the first time. By the end of the song he's working a menial labor job at the Railroad (a call back to the whistle heard when his wife left). He's working there because his depression is now such that he can't even hold the Car Wash job. He feels like his life is a "downbound train", as in, a downward spiral of depression that has caused him to lose everything. In the greater theme of the Born in the USA album this song illustrates the disillusionment with the "American Dream" for the average citizen.
polygon the railroad job is better paying than car wash, probably not a clear cut gig like the lumberyard. You have no idea what you are talking about, you are stupid
Last night I heard your voice You were crying, crying, you were so alone You said your love had never died You were waiting for me at home Put on my jacket, I ran through the woods I ran till I thought my chest would explode There in the clearing, beyond the highway In the moonlight, our wedding house shone I rushed through the yard, I burst through the front door My head pounding hard, up the stairs I climbed
I agree. Very underrated song. I appreciate the last verse offers no redemption for "Joe". It goes from bad to worse and the character ends up breaking the law and working on a chain gang. That's how i see hear it anyway
by far my favorite singer of all time.. my damn idol got every cd every live show, greatest of all time, live shit is amazing all round the best... we love you bruce
i wish i could have been there to see him in the 80's.....i mean iv been going to his concerts like 3 or 4 times a year since the reunion tour in 1999.....im 19 years old and i am the biggest bruce fan u will ever meet.
i am a lifelong bruce springsteen fan,and fellow bruce fans i am certain you will agree,we are running out of words to describe his brilliance.what can we say?excellent?brilliant?exceptional?world class?magnificent?is there a word in english that can do him justice?i dont think so.can somebody cleverer than me put there label on him?
There is no word. I wonder if he knows how unique and special he is and thanks God every night . So much talent, so much empathy, so much sex appeal, effortlessly wonderful voice, lyrics that make you want to cry or die..My father said he spoke for the common man. I think he makes you fall in love. Just call him what he is. He is The Boss xx😎🌹
Eu sou fã número 01 de Bruce. Ouco as canções desde os 14 anos. Gostaria muito de ir em um show dele. E conhecê-lo pessoalmente, esse Grande Cidadão do Mundo
The young voice of Springsteen... I have a dream, I will pick up my Tele to his concert and I will play the first chords of this song, then I will call: 'come on band!!' and Rock 'n Roll...

its a song about losing a person you love,i think that has or will happen to us all at some point in our lifes, hope it will never happen to all the people here, god bless
My mom ant my aunts grew up with Bruce, they all worked at Federici’s. I met him a few times, and he not only came back to his hometown, but always remembered my mom and friends from back then. Great guy. He just needs to keep his mouth shut when it comes to politics.
