Man walks along the railroad track
He's goin' some place, there's no turnin' back
The Highway Patrol chopper comin' up over the ridge
Man sleeps by a campfire under the bridge
The shelter line stretchin' around the corner
Welcome to the New World Order
Families sleepin' in their cars out in the Southwest
No job, no home, no peace, no rest, no rest
And the highway is alive tonight
Nobody's foolin' nobody is to where it goes
I'm sitting down here in the campfire light
Searchin' for the ghost of Tom Joad
He pulls his prayer book out of a sleepin' bag
The preacher lights up a butt and takes a drag
He's waitin' for the time when the last shall be first and the first shall be last
In a cardboard box 'neath the underpass
With a one way ticket to the promised land
With a hole in your belly and a gun in your hand
Lookin' for a pillow of solid rock
Bathin' in the cities' aqueducts
And the highway is alive tonight
Nobody's foolin' nobody is to where it goes
I'm sittin' down here in the campfire light
With the ghost of old Tom Joad
Solo
Now Tom Said; "Ma, whenever ya see a cop beatin' a guy
Wherever a hungry new born baby cries
Wherever there's a fight against the blood and hatred in the air
Look for me ma
I'll be there
Wherever somebody's srtugglin' for a place to stand
For a decent job or a helpin' hand
Wherever somebody is strugglin' to be free
Look in their eyes ma,
You'll see me
And the highway is alive tonight
Nobody's foolin' nobody is to where it goes
I'm sittin' down here in the campfire light
With the ghost of Tom Joad

And like yours, he also showed this to all of his friends. But crazy thing is....my dad ALSO passed away on the 31st of August, the same exact date! Except it was in 2011, just 4 years before yours. RIP to your father, I'm sure our fathers would have been amazing friends and bonded over their similar interests.

The original version of this song was okay... certainly the lyrics. Then I heard RATM's version and absolutely loved it. They added so much energy and passion to the song. But then Tom Morello joined Bruce on this song and something magic happened. I keep playing this over and over. From the beginning to end, I don't want to miss a single word or note, and Morello's guitar solo is one of the best I have ever seen and heard. This should be required listening for everyone, everywhere.

Random dude on the internet about RATM: "Another successful musician instantly becomes a political expert" Tom Morello responding: "One does not have to be an honors grad in political science from Harvard University to recognize the unethical and inhumane nature of this administration but well, I happen to be an honors grad in political science from Harvard University so I can confirm that for you." Yup... Summer after my freshman year of college. The energy was off the roof for Limp Bizkit, which kind of sucked because everyone was beat by the time Rage came on... Another thing that sucked was having 2 MAIN stages with headliners performing on both at very same time... Made for some tough decisions. For example, I think Rage and Chemical Brothers were both on at the same time. Overall, the 3 acts that tore the place up were: Limp Bizkit, Korn, and Kid Rock. Watch the video of Korn playing "Blind" and look at the crowd... Absolute MAYHEM!!! Was the best.

I love how even though Tom blows Bruce out of the water on guitar, Bruce just loves it. And this song is based on Steinbeck's 1939 depression era novel "The Grapes of Wrath" for those that don't know. And Woody Guthrie, a huge influence on both Bruce and Tom ("arm the homeless" on his guitar is a tribute to Woody) also did songs about this novel. If you can't be bothered reading the book, Tom Joad is the protagonist (main character, for morons). Watch the film if you're too lazy to read, it'll be worth your while.

Aside from the amazing musical talent... This song means a lot to me. I lived it. Quite literally. I mean we all take music and we make it our own one way or another. But this song is relatively literal. I was a strung out homeless needle using shitbag junkie. Speaking of which by the way today is my 2-year mark. To the day. Anyway... This song still brings me to tears when I hear it. It speaks volumes. I love the guitar work. The first time I ever heard this I wasn't watching the video I was aware that it was Bruce Springsteen and Tom Morello but as I said I wasn't watching the video I was just listening to the audio in the guitar work I did not know that they were going back and forth. I thought it was just Tom Morello. I mean he does have a very very distinct sound. Which brings me to my last point... He hits a couple notes in the second solo that he does.. Tom Morello that is.. It's very nostalgic. Listen for it. Even the crowd gets louder when he hits those notes. It's very very very nostalgic of the raging against the machine days I recognize those notes the moment I heard it. I love it when artists take a handful of notes from another song and they incorporate it into something different decades later. At any rate.. Happy new year to all of you. Stay safe and God bless. ❤️

Someone help me understand this. How did this arrangement of this song come about? It is nothing like Bruce's original recording. It is nothing like the RATM version. Who put this arrangement together? It seems like the collaboration of Bruce and Tom Morello produced an entirely different version of the song. In my opinion it is vastly better than the other two versions. I loved the other 2 versions but this one is magic.

Tom took up an offer to play with Boss. Boss had earlier mentioned that he should sometime join a gig - so he called one random day and Boss said OK. Then he practiced all the songs and he was somewhat out of key. Anyways, the day of the concert - Boss gave him a key and he took it from there (there is an interview of him somewhere on youtube, see if you can find it..he tells the story)

@@pgaquigz1125 Eric Clapton is a great guitar player, absolutely. But what Tom Morello does in this solo, is pretty unique. He manages to use the guitar itself as an extension of the sounds, he not only uses the strings. The way he mimics sounds (like helicopters), the political statements on his guitar, his strings not cut of... that just makes it bad ass. I'm not saying he's the best guitar player ever, of that this is the beste solo ever. But it definitely is one of the most bas ass solo's.
