If we had to leave our tractors outside on cold winter nights/days we would plug in the block heaters if possible and throw a couple of moving blankets over the engine/hood to help hold in the heat. With that setup I’ve been able to start them at -25*F w/o too many problems.

Thanks Luc! It’s sure did kinda sound like them! Haha. It’s so cold out, I decided to not mess with it anymore today. By tomorrow evening we’ll start warming up to “normal cold” and I’ll probably fill it with winter blend diesel and get it setup for snow attachments. Merry Christmas to you and your family as well! Stay warm!

Also you want to push the clutch in if it’s a manual transmission, Otherwise it’s turning the main shaft in the transmission which is running in very thick oil and it makes the starter work so much harder and the engine is under a load starting. If you start the tractor and let it warm up 10 seconds or so then let the clutch out you will notice how much the tractor will lug down.

When I got my nice 1984, John Deere 750 6 years ago I changed all the fluids. While changing themostat and adding diesel antifreeze I did install a block heater and love it. Plugged in for a couple hours it starts right up like it was summertime. I did get the Thermo-Start working again with a new element but never need it. Near Battle Creek, Mi.

Up in Loveland I woke up to -19 and realized I didn't plug in my 12 valve... it didn't start and im 80% sure i burnt out my grid heater trying to. First time its let me down. That was the only thing I dared to start, if the cummins won't start I am not going to get an old ford diesel tractor started to move snow, and certainly not my 1066... the 1066 at least has the built in Cosby can and a block heater, the ford has marginal glow plugs at best.

-17 is brutal! I don't know if I would survive being in that cold of weather as a Florida native 😂 How are your tractors at the ranch holding up? I bet they are getting some sub zero frigid weather too. Supposed to dip down into upper teens here in North Florida tonight and tomorrow night. Have you thought about saving a tractor or two from Crazy D's Equipment video? I hate to see vintage tractors go to scrap. Stay warm and Merry Christmas! 🇺🇲🚜👍
@TractorHoarders
@TractorHoarders Год назад
The other tractors are holding up fine. I think batteries are their weak point in the cold, but they almost always start! Can’t beat old iron! I hope folks can save some of those tractors but I don’t think I’ll be in the group. I feel the old tractor market is way down and you can buy some really decent machines for $1000. Any basket cases will need way more than that.

I'm going out on a limb here., your tractor may be different than mine ... (I have a 06 4720) But to my knowledge turning the key switch or just cycling the key switch is not activating the glows or intake heater. Have you tried pushing in on the key (like choking a boat engine)the dash glow indicator should light when you do this.. And if I'm right on this you should hold it in 10-20 seconds.... then try starting it.. And more than likely you DON'T have glow plugs.... I speculate with as new as that looks, you would have intake heater. Cheers. Now lets see how bad I get beat up. **Man throw a Tarp over Her PLEASE** [EDIT] (glad to hear she stays in building most time) So much easier to have a cleaner of snow/rain if you tarp and bungee to keep the hateful wind from blowing it off. Your tractor I know... My Excavator has set out for 10 years so I can't knock you too much..
@TractorHoarders
@TractorHoarders 9 месяцев назад
Hello and thank you for the detailed comment. This little 1025R has a Yanmar engine, I assume like the 4720, and it does have glow plugs. This tractor has stayed outside for two nights in total; both for these cold start videos. It’s got a pretty easy life. 😊 I’d compare my tractor to those who use their equipment to do work to earn money. Mine is kind of the same; I just make videos instead of doing hard work. Have a great New Year!
@jesseamaya4594
@jesseamaya4594 Год назад
One trick you can use if you HAVE to get a diesel engine running when it's cold is get a propane torch, remove the air cleaner elements and CAREFULLY! aim the lit torch in the air cleaner WHILE CRANKING. DO NOT apply torch unless the engine is actively turning over and be careful not to melt the air cleaner housing and obviously don't use this method with starting fluid.

Much easier and safer to use the Wifes hair dryer which works great. But you must keep it an inch or so away from the manifold or you'll burn up her hair dryer and she won't be very happy. Easy to find used ones for a couple bucks. I always use the block heater for about 2 hrs and the old John Deere 750 starts like summertime.

Great video. So I won’t buy one of those !!!! Hehe. Just kidding Hans. The black truck there you have. I think you started it the last time you did the test on the tractor. And I believe it started fine. So I guess I’m wondering what the difference in the diesel truck, if it’s diesel, and the diesel JD tractor. ? Have a good holiday Hans.
@TractorHoarders
@TractorHoarders Год назад
Yes, you’re right. And the truck started with no issue this morning. Both are diesel. I think the difference lies in the fuel injection systems. My tractor has indirect injection (common for older styles diesels) and the truck has direct injection. It’s my understanding that indirect injection engines start with more difficulty in the cold. We don’t have enough of these really cold days for me to test like like to. I feel like if I could try a battery with more cranking amps, it may start easier in the cold. Not sure though. If we have another cold snap, I may test that theory.
@noelstractors-firewood57
@noelstractors-firewood57 Год назад
@@TractorHoarders thanks Hans. Be interesting to find out that if you had a new battery would that make the difference. Or, you have to have it plugged in to 120 power to start. So, if you lived in Canada, northern, and the tractor sat outside all winter. And you had no way of plugging it in, how would you get it started.
