My car is 22 years old now and most of the things that are breaking now are simply due to age (rather than mileage)...and it's STILL cheaper than buying a new vehicle!

I mean, yeah, obviously lol. Cause at the end of the day the 22 year old car is worth only 3500.00. Even an engine replacement would be cheaper than spending 35k on a new car. Seems like a moot point.

At 221k miles I had to replace the door lock switches of my 2004 Ford Ranger. At $75 a pop just for a stinking switch, I wanted to swear. But I bit the bullet. Now it isn't bugging me so much because the Ranger is in great condition and has been paid for since 34,000 miles on the odometer. Drive it until the wheels fall off. Then jack it up and put new ones on. 😉

I think there’s a lot of built up anger out there towards car manufacturers. People didn’t appreciate the way auto companies outright tried to bend customers over with these prices over the last few years. Personally I’d be happy if I never had to buy another vehicle again just to avoid giving another cent to a car company. I for one would not mind an old car like a 1964 impala or something basic like that for instance. I do most of my own mechanics and can work on a car like that easy. Have we grown so " entitled", dependant on more and more 'Luxury and ease" and have a coveting mindset for more greedy things? I would have to say that CQA vehicles are a rational, reasonable choice. - low insurance - no massive depreciation loss - affordable But not $100,000+ vehicles. It's not clear how stubbornly wrong-headed these folks are, regarding pricing. $15,000 cars, $20,000 cars, fine. If you live in a city, you don't even need a car anyway. I know, right??! Insane! I’d been driving my ‘02 Honda Civic LX for 18 years and desperately needed a new car since it was on its last legs. I was set on buying another Civic and thought about waiting a bit longer to see if prices would come down a bit. After doing some research, I decided they probably wouldn’t. At least, not enough to justify waiting any longer. Honda and Toyota had the lowest inventory and tightest days’ supply of all brands. AND they had the highest demand. So I bought a brand new ’23 Civic in January 2023. Nearly two years later and the price hasn’t come down at all! 😳 At least the price didn’t drop like a rock AFTER I bought! And yes, vehicle prices have fundamentally changed since before the pandemic. If you need a new vehicle, just buy it. Shop without expecting any significant price drops or “return to normal.” This IS our new normal. Good luck!

I'm afraid your probably right on the prices not coming down and we can blame the car buying idiots out there spending and buying trucks and SUV's they can't afford, I sold cars for a feew years in 2017-18 and I knew there was going to be $100,000 dollar trucks then cause my boss said thats what Ford had planned, I never thought I'd see the day when so many morons would spend that kind of money on a truck but they are out there, my wife works at a Polaris dealer and they just sold a Ranger for $72,000 and the most popular question she is asked "when are the prices coming down" she says when you stop paying it and there's too many guys that won't

I have been driving the same Ford E-250 Van for over 20 years now. It has 305,000 miles on it. Rebuilt the Transmission 10 years ago for $400. This is the Third Motor in it now. I bought the used motor off of Facebook Market place for $150. Had it installed for $900. Added $300 for new parts on it. Bought new tires for less than $ 400. It still runs good. I might end up having the motor rebuilt in the future and keep it going still. My yearly cost is so low. I bought the truck used for like $ 2,400 with 80,000 miles. I do most of work on it myself.

I don't think car prices will drop, the reason is with the inflation, its raising the commodity prices. We got the BRICS countries going to announce their own money, it will mean more inflation for America as they start dumping the dollar, thus you will pay more for cars long term.

I've been following the whole BRICS thing it is mostly related to agricultural commodities than anything else but it certainly can apply to other things like automobiles as well which defects will be able to potentially put a dent in the USA global financial pocket. One for sure, a certain former US President should have never started an unprovoked tariff war with China and caused USA farmers to lose business to Brazil and Argentina fir which both of those are part of BRICS.

The best time to buy any car, new or used is the last day the dealer is open before Christmas. I've done it many times. For example, in '84 at a GM dealer I bought a 2-year-old Dodge U.S. conversion van, loaded & like new. At the time the Dodge dealer had the same but new less running boards & crosswire mag wheels for over $23K. I bought the '82 for a little under $9K & to seal the deal, they gave me a GMAC 2 year/24K warranty. I was the only customer in the dealership. In '09 just before Christmas bought a used '09 Impala loaded with 12K miles for under $14K. MSRP new was over $27K. It boils down to how bad do they want to sell it to how bad do I want to buy it?

The trick is to buy three or four different class $3,000 vehicles. Keep your eyes open for a well-aging car, stay brand agnostic. I couldn't imagine sitting in a penalty nox Civic for 20 years straight. Sure save money - I'd love to have one in the wolf pack. Sometimes you just want to roll in the panther platform, but you still need something for the dump. Cheap truck fun.

Brandon a quick word about rates. Lower rates don’t matter unless the 10 treasury rates also go down, since those are what folks use to set the benchmark for things like home and auto loans. Ever since the Fed has lowered rates, the 10 year has only gone up and so have interest rates. The Fed can lower all they want, but the market is calling their spending out.

Trying to time the auto buying market just depends on what the dealer and car OEM is offering, and how much inventory they have on lot. I got a new 2021 car in mid-Feb 2021 for -12.9% under invoice, free all weather mats, 8 miles on the odm, and 0% interest rate for four years (four payments left!). It was a pretty good deal on a new car. I admit, it was just plain luck, since if I tried to buy in March, I would've paid at min MSRP due to the semiconductor shortage. So time of month can be important... but I think what's more important is how desperate the dealership wants to move inventory (and if the OEM is offering direct to customer rebates and financing deals). If buying a new car, I would say Feb is the perfect time to test the waters for a new car... prior model year is being clearanced out (lots of OEM promotions), and tons of current year model coming in daily. They need to move cars.
