The box on the screen was wrong as it showed the top of the zone at Bryce's BELT LINE. Here is MLB's official definition of the strike zone: "The official strike zone is the area over home plate from the midpoint between a batter's shoulders and the top of the uniform pants -- when the batter is in his stance and prepared to swing at a pitched ball -- and a point just below the kneecap." According to the official MLB strike zone definition that was a strike. Never trust the boxes that are used on the screen, because they are almost always NOT accurate.

@@Joe_Okey Exactly, look at :29, the box is at his belt line. Even at :30, the bottom of the box is at his shin, the top of the box should be at about the umps chin guard. The top of the box should be between Harper's shoulders (plural). Harper is a baby.

Jomboy says of that high strike, "Data say's it's out of the zone." That is correct. But close call sports did an analysis of this play and pointed out the problem with the computer strike zone. The tv system says the expected call is a ball. But both savant illustrator, savant 3d, and if you actually look at the tv gameday graphic, it's a strike. And this is something that close call sports has been harping on all season. The TV computer ball/strike system consistently misses high strikes in the vertical. While the left and right are very accurate, the bottom is a generally accurate, the top of the strike zone often struggles with being accurate. It's caused a lot of conflicts this season between umps, players, and managers. because they see the replay and they see the ball graphic on the screen, but if you look at the actual pitch, it's a strike. But they don't do that, just just look at the graphic.

Thank you for this. I commented after the vid went up that I disagreed with the placement of the box. As he's standing before and after the pitch the top of the unofficial zone is at his belt or below. It's way too low. But the pitch was a strike for 2 reasons....which people can't comprehend....because they're always focused on that box. The first reason is it's in the real actual strike zone. The second reason it's a strike....because the ump called it a strike.

@joshuawhelan9358 7 месяцев назад
@@jbones2121 I mean, it could get ridiculous with just timing in F1. There's 3 sectors in a lap and the shortest race of the season is Spa, at 44 laps. That's already 132 data points, but then teams also use minisectors, which breaks down each sector into smaller sections for more precise timing, basically to see where they gain and lose time vs other teams. So there could be as many as 10-20x minisectors in a single sector which now puts the "shortest" race (ie on laps) at somewhere between 1320-2640 data points just in terms of lap/sector times. You can then expand that out to the entire weekend, across the whole field of cars, across the whole season and also include any testing done by teams. With some quick guesstimates that could be something like 2-3 MILLION data points just in terms of timing...
@TheHeadincharge

@@R.J._LewisMillions of data points over time yes, but how many statistics are being tracked in total? Thats just not how the zone works bro 😂😂😂. The zone size is entirely based on the players listed height. They can squat as much as they like, or stand up completely straight and its the exact same size. It does not shift with how much the player lowers themself when getting ready to swing.

@@Rytoast99 I know I’m just saying it’s dotted. It’s a hard pitch to take with two strikes, and it’s all about blue. Couple things, the Statbox is not accurate, it is approximate. One of the issues is due to the fact the camera sits higher than ground level, so the angle is distorted. The MLB strike zone is officially "area over home plate from the midpoint between a batter's shoulders and the top of the uniform pants -- when the batter is in his stance and prepared to swing at a pitched ball -- and a point just below the kneecap." Again, angles are distorted, but watch Harper as the Pitcher starts to deliver (roughly 0:29)... he lowers his shoulders.. so the top of the strike zone is higher and the statbox is belt high. You will also notice, the size of the statbox doesn't adjust player by player, because it is an "approx". It does not account their height versus their torso height... and, yes, you can have two guys the exact same height and different measurements of legs, neck and torso... that is why the rules give a more obscure point of half-way between the shoulders and belt (for top of strike zone).

I see a lot of people don't understand the strike zone and say this projected strike zone is off. The top of the strike zone is the midpoint between the top of the shoulders and the belt. BUT it isn't determined during their pre pitch stance like many assume. The top of the strike zone is determined when the player is in their normal/natural stance, ready to swing. This is usually after their load. Pause it when Bryce's foot lands and you'll see the projected zone lines up with his midpoint. Watch other breakdowns if you are not convinced because Jomboy usually includes live feed of regular at bats. You'll see lots of players standing straight before pre pitch and the box will be at their belt. But after their load, it'll be at the midpoint. Some boxes may be slightly off but most of the time they are accurate. On pc or laptop you can use comma and period to go frame by frame if needed.

The top of Bryce's strike zone while in stance is 3.30 (with ball radius) (3 feet, 3 3/5 inches). The ball crossed the plate at 3.45 (3' 5 2/5"). The margin of error is so close at 3.38 (3' 4 1/2"). We are talking 1 to 1.8 inches. Ump is positioned right in the middle of the strike zone with a clear view. I think the thing that messes him up is simple. First, the catcher did an excellent job of framing. He pulled the ball into the strike zone quickly and not too far. But also, Brice lowers himself so much in his stance that it probably screwed him up as well. Balls and strikes get missed, umpires are not fallible. Robo umps will be much the same, or even worse, as anyone who's seen them in action can attest. But Bryce has 39 errors over his career. While that's pretty good for an outfielder, they are still errors. Who gets in Bryce's face when these happen? Who tells him he's soft? We are all humans with imperfections, so until there is a perfect athlete that doesn't make an error, or swing and miss on strike three, etc. they need to sit down, and shut up. Because two wrongs don't make a right.
@Alexander_Grant
@Alexander_Grant 7 месяцев назад
Who gets in his face? You serious? Let's see, the coach can bench him, the GM can trade him, the ump can throw him out of the game, the fans can and will yell at him, the other team can call him soft, he could get sent back down to the minors, should I continue? What happens when an ump makes a bad call, or is consistently awful like Angel Hernandez? Absolutely nothing besides players or managers yelling at them. They don't go back to the minors, they aren't in danger of losing their job to the next best talent, hell even the MLB said they know Hernandez is too bad to ump the World Series. Come on man, I know you aren't saying umpires have it tougher than players. Sports is one of the few things left in life that is a true meritocracy and referees and umpires are the only part of it that aren't part of that meritocracy.

@@Alexander_Grant The coach can bench him, true. But a good coach isn't getting in his face, he wants him to perform. An ump won't throw him out of the game for an error, he'll throw him out for breaking a rule. Fans don't get in his face, the ones who do get thrown out of the stadium and can't come back. I will agree with you on Angel Hernandez... that's the saddest story of umpiring. He needs to go, he won't because of unions. But, there is one thing he won't do. He won't ump a world series, something he has sued the MLB to try and get. And while Angel gets paid max, as do all long time umps, they all don't get paid anywhere near an MLB player on the top of his game will. They are in a position of authority on the field. Alex Tossi's scorecard has him missing 9 pitches that game... out of 200. Not many players are 96% accurate... Bryce probably swings and misses more than 4% of the time. Tossi has a 95% accuracy this year, putting him 10th on the year. Angel is 94th (last) with 91.1% accuracy, by the way. Tossi is a good ump. Even good umps make bad calls every once in a while. What I was trying to say before, players and coaches need to stop being babies about it when it happens.
@Alexander_Grant
@Alexander_Grant 7 месяцев назад
@@PapaVanTwee5 Ah yes, the fan in the stands that yelled at him to throw more stuff definitely got thrown out of that game, no coach has ever had any confrontations with players, and umps have never thrown any player out for trivial reasons. Come on man, don't argue in bad faith and be nitpicky. The point is that most players are under far more scrutiny with far bigger consequences than any umpire. You're judging apples and oranges when you're using percentages. College kickers on football teams aren't better than Steph Curry at their respective sport because they score field goals at a higher percentage of their attempts than Steph does 3s. You can't measure success of two different activities by using absolute percentages. The point I'm ultimately making is that when umps mess up, there's no accountability beyond players and coaches yelling at them. Give the players and coaches a legitimate way to file complaints that the league will look at seriously. They can't even publicly criticize the umps right now without getting hit with a fine. Implement a system that puts the best umpires on the field and regulates the terrible ones to the minors and I promise a lot of the behavior stops if they see that have any other recourse than to yell at the umpire. I'm also sick of this "they're acting like babies" idea. I imagine with the arguments you're making, you've never played sports at a serious level before, which is fine, I think Jomboy is doing a great job of explaining a lot of the intricacies of the sport. I grew up in a baseball household, my dad played college ball, and me and my two brothers all played at least at the varsity high school level with my youngest brother playing college ball right now. One of the quickest ways to lose your team is to not show that you're on the player's side. Along with the only way to show displeasure and attempt to right the wrongs of the umpires, a coach going out there and sticking up for his players is a way to light a fire under a team. It's not solely in baseball that this happens either, it happens in basketball too. There's been plenty of examples of coaches going out there to get rung for that reason. It's such an immature way of thinking that doesn't account for the entire mental aspect of sports to describe it as "acting like babies." Imagine if in your work life you had a manager that was willing to do that to his superiors to get you a raise. It may not be a cultural norm in the workplace culture you have, but you'd respect the hell out of him and fight for him if that was the case wouldn't you?

A bat slam can be an immediate ejection, if you throw a bat/helmet, etc. and the umpire makes note of it and points, that's an equipment violation and a fine. The second equipment violation is also an ejection on top of the fine. It's surprising he didn't get rung for throwing his helmet. But since he didn't, what he really got tossed for was arguing balls and strikes. Usually an umpire will throw up a stop sign to let them know they need to stop, but my guess is with the equipment violations, he had less tolerance for arguing. Any lingering and arguing balls and strikes is ejection worthy, no warning is needed.
