HP Umpire Shane Livensparger ejected Reds 1B Joey Votto from the dugout for arguing a strike call from the top of the 1st inning against St Louis. It would've been incredible if he got thrown out, then shook hands with the umps and thanked them with a littke wink, and then as soon as the game was over he announced his retirement.

Votto is such a smart, creative, and calculating person that this honestly very well could have been a pre-meditated move. He might have coordinated with the umpires that if there’s anything that happens that he could potentially bark about, he will and they’d throw him out quickly. That wink and a smile, while seemingly either patting or shaking hands w the umpires kind of gives it away. This seems like something that would be highly amusing and entertaining to Votto on his last game

I'm a soccer referee, and I've had 2 college players approach me before a game and ask me to show them a yellow card (5 accumulated yellow card in college soccer results in a 1-game suspension) because their next game was a fluff game while the game after the fluff game was a conference or playoff game. They wanted to sit out the fluff game and have their accumulation cleared rather than risk a suspension happening in a game that mattered.

@Linsey: another, perhaps more interesting, rules development in another farewell game. The Giant's final game of the season was all about celebrating Brandon Crawford, who is likely done as a Giant, and may be retiring. Before his first AB at the start of the bottom of the first, there was a delay as Crawford received a lengthy ovation before stepping into the box. At the top of the ninth, Crawford took the field, and after the Giant's pitcher warmed up, the Giants interim manager came out to the mound to remove Crawford from the game so he could receive one more ovation. There was a lengthy delay (at least a couple minutes) has Crawford got a hug from nearly every teammate on the mound and then the dugout before tipping his cap to the crowd. The game didn't resume until he exited dugout via the tunnel. The takeaway here is that, for at least this one game, the umpires ignored the game clock for an on-field in-game celebration.

If I remember correctly, there was a similar issue with Cody Bellinger. Except that, in Bellinger's case, the ump struck him for the delay. I believe CCS noted it in one of its videos.

I think there’s a rule that the club has to notify the league in advance of any such celebrations, then the pitch clock can be stopped. In Bellinger‘s case neither Cubs or Dodgers did that before the game.

I agree this looks so like an intentional getting oneself ejected… and I also agree with the announcer… tablets need to be removed from the dugouts… nice tool when used correctly.. but too much are used to judge the umpires…

Umpires should be judged. They get paid a lot of money and are TERRIBLY bad.

@@aaroncandella2881 Actually, MLB umpires are not paid that much.. Joe west was the highest paid umpire in MLB when he retired... He was still only 2/3rds of the MLB minimum player wage... No, MLB umpires are not paid enough to put up with the spoiled brats. Sadly, the players should be judged harsher.. 1 because they are in violation of the rules.. and 2.. They are being paid MILLIONS where umpires get thousands... People seem to think umpires should be perfect... but on the votto K.. the umpire MIssed 1 pitch.. Votto MISSED 2...

@@bowdocarat Are you perfect? Do you NEVER make a mistake…First.. if you answer yes to either of those… we know you’re lying.. it’s part of being human.. WTF do you think an umpire is not human and can be perfect? It’s easy to call perfect games with instant replay… Try it at full speed.. 1 viewing only… Believe me.. You and all of the UMPIRES (well, maybe not Angel) want to be perfect and right.. but we and they are all human… don’t expect them to be other worldly.. The reason why we still use human umpires is simply.. Tech can help.. but it’s not up to speed with the game… I personally believe that instant replay and that stupid box are hurting the game.. ratings are down (ALOT)… Bud and Rob have made changes to help and I think most of them have hurt the game… replay and that box are two of them. Interleague play was cool… for 2-3 seasons.. but the loss of the league separation.. really takes away from the game.. now with no DH… there is not NL or AL.. they are conferences now.. and complaining about the umps.. yes, they make mistakes (sadly, less often than the players do), but they are trying and they are human.. and if you’ve never worked as one… looking on from the TV it looks easy.. I’ve done the job.. even for LL.. it’s NOT.. (and LL is harder than older age groups.). Never judge until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes.. I have.. it’s not easy.

I believe that, in between innings, the home plate umpire should consult with a "review and rectify" crew. It can be one person in the video room that watches over the home plate umpire. He or she can take notes and, as suggested, inform the umpire about his calls. Umpires should be able to make adjustments in the moment, with the assistance of technical support. They are doing it for play calls. Why not for the pitch calls? Of course, that means putting another person on the payroll. I get it. But it's the MLB. They can afford it.

Not enough time between innings (2:15), plus it's a further distraction. Additionally, the crew is supposed to make sure that the dugouts aren't talking about throwing at batters or trying to cleat infielders.

@@SimonFoster23111971 I'm not referring to the crew. Just the home plate ump. Calls are questioned with play reviews, so the base umps don't have to be a part of the pitching review. So if the home plate ump can quickly get a review of his calls, it could help him to make better calls. It's very possible. "You were off on this pitch. You were off on that pitch." A quick explanation of how he was off, and that should do it. It's a correction in the moment.

@@llwc9435 By being reviewed during games, the Home Plate umpire is then prone to second-guessing themself on the close ones - which then further erodes relationships. Anyway, it wouldn't affect the game - as a call can't be changed.

@@SimonFoster23111971 Baseball is a game of adjustments. Every player in each dugout reviews their at-bat and fielding in order to make adjustments. That's what all those tablets are for. The coaching staff does it. Everyone does it. Also, what do you think the play reviews are for? How do you think it makes an umpire feel when they receive a decision from NY that deems their call to be wrong? They adjust. It would be no different for the home plate ump. Everyone is adjusting to the new rules. Doing the same for pitch calls would be great. In between innings, the home plate ump gets a briefing. From that, he makes his adjustments. When pitchers think they've thrown a strike, but the umpire called it a ball--why do you think they ask the umpire where the pitch was? It's so they can make the adjustment. Same thing needs to happen for the home plate ump. You're really making it a bigger deal than it would be for the home plate ump. They make adjustments just like the players do.

Here's one that came up while watching the 1990 world series. Game 3, Top of the fifth, Duncan on First with one out and Larkin batting, they pitch out and Steinbach steps into the left hand batters box to take the pitch and throw to second. Larkin swings and hits Steinbach's arm. Larkin is called out.

Votto didn't need a tablet. He was standing right there. If it was close enough that he couldn't tell standing there then it's close enough not to get too upset about just because of a toy tablet.

So the ball is 1/2 a ball off of the strike zone. Plenty of umpires call that a strike. Whoever came up with this box idea on tv and letting the players and managers and coaches watch it in the dugout should be fired. Now, or sooner.
