I agree with another comment here, BTS's views on political and social issues are one of the main reasons why other kpop acts (specifically SM acts) never make it in the west. They don't have the artistic merit nor do they typically have the freedom to speak on these issues. The way BTS is marketed as not only a pop group who are cute, funny and make good music but also as introspective, aware and have substance in their music have really helped them suceed in the west, a market where ethics and the social climate often directly corrolate with what artists put in their music and openly address.

Regarding the BLM tweet by BTS that made the K-diamonds (Korean ARMY's nickname) began to understand and accept it reminds me of that time when Yoongi said something about influence. *We haven’t directly helped anyone. Giving them an opportunity to take a step forward through us.* - Yoongi, Bring The Soul: Docu-series Ep.4 Influence Ever since that day I heard Yoongi said this, it never leaves my mind, not even a single time. That's a powerful statement coming from no other than Min Yoongi. And it hits harder at times like this. BTS and BigHit donated $1 Million to Black Lives Matter and ARMY began to donate with the hashtag MatchAMillion which now crosses over $1 Million today. That's what influence means. Goosebumps.

Saying "Black Lives Matters" is not only an America specific statement. It's a world wide problem. Look at the way Black people are being treated in countries around the world (including Korea). Kpop groups making a statement in support can show solidarity with the movement and against racism. I saw so many racist posts on weverse before the statement. Afterwards? I didn't see a single one. It's not just about being relevant but also about being a role model. Edit: Wow okay. So, I didn't see this had turned into a whole discourse. My point is that SAYING Black lives matters is something that should be taken into account world wide. Black lives matter whether you are in the US or in Russia. I'm Dominican and there is racism in my country too. Therefore, there is a need for awareness on racism. THAT is what I mean by saying Black lives matters is not only something that needs to be said in America. Of course, one band making a comment isn't going to change the world, but it can start a discussion. Just like the one going on here. It can open conversations about racism in your own life and in your own country. I am also not disregarding the existence of racism against Asian people. That is something that needs to be discussed as well. However, at the moment I am talking about the racism that Black people face worldwide.

So...basiclly the "Big 3", aren't speaking out because they are concerned with their profits? For me, that means they don't care about BLM! This is one of the reasons I LOVE BTS! They know how to put people before profit. For everyone that's upset about the rioting, you have no idea what's really going on. Educate yourself before you make judgments. You don't have to teach your son what to do if a police officer pulls him over.

As an American I respect BTS for speaking up. They aren't just a frog in a well. Black lives matter isn't political it is a human issue. Staying silent is why things continue here.

Like Jay Park said, if you do not want to support black lives matter, then STAY AWAY FROM OUR CULTURE. Do not wear dreads and other "ethnic hip" styles, don't make rap, and don't ask for our help if you are ever in need. You do not deserve to profit from our culture and history. Those idols need to remember that the next time they want to make a "hip hop style" video or song. I am ashamed of thos artists as a black kpop fan.

BLM is a human rights movement and like Danny said, these artists should be using their platform to help. Another reason I think it is important for K-Pop artists to speak on it is due to how much of Kpop is influenced by Black culture / music and the person that spoke the best about that influence was CL on her instagram post (go see it if you haven't already). You can't ignore the struggle of an entire group of people while also taking whatever you like from that same people. The donation BTS made is incredibly commendable and the fact that ARMY's decided to match their donation shows why it is important for people with big platforms to at least speak up or take a stance. That however does not mean it's okay to harass or bully people for not speaking up. At the end of the day, it's the persons own choice as well as how much control they even have in their own life to be able to do what they want.

Idols do deserve the right to speak on matters that are important to them. However, I do understand that it can feel not as simple as just speaking out for Idols, especially those with international fans. We can all agree that BLM is an important movement but there also are many other countries and cultures facing similar issues of oppression violence and human rights violations, so how do they decide which issues are important to speak on and which aren't? Are we equally condemning western artists for not speaking on global issues, or is it ok for *them* to only care and speak out on issues that effect their own countries? I sometimes question whether some people truly care about whether idols speak on the issues, or if they only care about whether idols speak out about the issues that *THEY* want them to? It can be a slippery slope of complaining that idols are puppets for their companies, without the autonomy to act humanely, while also (as fans and consumers) treating them like dolls that we can force to act and speak in the way that *WE* want them to. We tell them to eat well and take time to rest, unless they gain weight or aren't putting out as much content as we'd like. We tell them we just want them to be happy, unless happiness comes in the form of outside friends or (god forbid) dating. We want them to speak, unless it's not what we want them to say... without taking into account they are human beings with their own feelings and viewpoints. Basically, I just think that the hypocritical way the *some* people within fandoms behave towards idols has some effect on the freedom that even socially conscious artists feel about speaking out on subjects that could be considered controversial. Someone will always be upset by what they said, when they said it, or what they didn't say about something else.

I kind of feel two ways about idols speaking out about BLM. On one hand, I don't really expect them to talk about BLM because they don't even talk about politics in Korea (which I think is a huge problem in general). But on the other hand, we we need to acknowledge how much kpop is influenced by Black culture and music. CL put out an amazing post on instagram about the Black artists that influenced her, from fashion to dance to expressions. So it feels wrong to have an industry that incorporates these aspects into kpop without acknowledging where they come from and the struggle that the people who created these things are going through. Also, people should use this current moment to think about how BLM applies to their environment. There are Black people living in Korea and I know they face discrimination. Is Korea talking about this. And outside of Black populations, there are minority populations in every country, whether it's racial minorities, religious minorities or sexual minorities. Use this moment to think about others around you are treated and what you can do to try to make things better, even if it is simply just creating a post to raise awareness.

I know a lot of older people listen to kpop too, but if kpop idols were more open in talking about world problems, it would completely change the way outsider see kpop too. They'll think it less and less as just a teens and kids music genre.

It's worth mentioning in your argument for kpop idols to support causes, *just why they should have specifically shown support or respect for Black America already*. (* edited after comment) If they are rappers, R&B singers, B-boys, beatboxers, krumpers etc then this is the time to make an offering of their solidarity for the communities where these art forms were birthed. David made a good point about kpop music bringing happiness to folks (I can't agree that they cure depression as that's not how that works but) and I'm sure a lot of korean artists felt that same happiness after hearing certain black artists too. isn't that how black culture was embraced by Koreans? Wasn't Seo Taeji inspired by the outspokenness of american rappers? Enough so to make the artform relatable to other Koreans? Aren't hip hop dance moves common when artists express themselves? I wouldn't say black americans are "owed" anything from South Korea, our own country owes us much already, but I personally think korean entertainment would be all the better if they acknowledge where some of their inspiration comes from. If individual idols don't do this, then for sure the big companies like SM, JYP etc should make a stand as they are the ones capitalizing the most from black artistic expression. It’s great that BTS made a statement on the matter, but I didn’t like how some fans and antis were badgering them about it. Real fans would know their character and trust where they stood on the issue of BLM. Really though at the end of the day they are celebrities. You shouldn’t need a celebrity to be your moral compass.

I’m proud of BTS and BigHit because they’ve always been outspoken about everything. From politics to loving yourself. BTS are changing the world and I’m glad they have the courage to speak about important issues. Danny is right, kpop idols need to grow some balls. Regarding should idols speak out about BLM; - First of all, I think they should. They have a platform so they should use it. They can't just use elements of black culture and thrive using these elements and completely disregard the injustices happening to those who created that culture. That just gives the entirety of kpop an even worse name than it already does - BUT I don't think its fair to out right insult and harrass the idols if they don't either. (Ex) Like what some people were doing with BTS before they spoke out. There were people making discussions as to how they were supposedly anti black and deemed them as terrible humans only for it to later be revealed that they had been in the process of donating even before they spoke up. And no I'm not talking about those who were rightfully disappointed or frustrated at their silence) - Kinda sad how speaking up about racial discrimination is considered controversial tbh but I guess that's reality.

Danny is asking for idols to be more genuine and empathetic to the average person in their message, which I agree. I also think if you borrow or use aspects from a particular culture/community then you should be sensitive to the troubles that the community or culture that you're borrowing from is facing.

I agree that speaking up about it would be great but forcing them to do so is not the right way. Spamming idols on instagram or twitter to "open their purses" and similar stuff just seems really rude to me. If they want to speak up or donate it should be their own choice and that would be meaningful and genuine. They shouldn't do it because they are forced to do so. Some fans should calm down and maybe trust their idols a little bit. So many people were throwing BTS under the bus for not talking about it. They did but there were still so many posts saying that "this doesn't mean anything if you don't spend your money or sign petitions." Now it's revealed that they donated 1M dollars. I mean, try to chill a bit with your accusations and spamming. Many US fans compare idols to how american celebrities show their activism and just expect them to do and be the same.

And that's why BTS is a whole different breed of artists and on the top. And them being up there is why many kpop fans are hating on them becoz their idols tend to be looked down upon when compared to BTS. BTS also have a lot to lose by talking about their truth, but atleast they have the balls. They are authentic and people see through it that's why theyre more appreciated globally (aside from more obvious set of talents of course)

Because we know just how much Black culture has influenced the K Pop industry it's understandable that fans would want to know where their favourite idols/groups stand. Myself included. That being said,I don't condone pressuring them because we should also keep in mind that MOST of the agencies that manage these artists are very strict and would limit/screen what they (idols)post on their accounts so please don't pressure them. I understand that we're all very sensitive during this time but please keep in mind that during this time persons still have their own concerns/worries to deal with.

To add another nuance to the discussion. While I agree that it is important that idols speak (and CAN speak) about some social issues I see a lot of comments about how the artists art saves someone's life and gave them an escape from reality. I think balance is important. Society should allow idols to speak up, but not pressure them into it. Because in the end, how genuine is something said under pressure?

BLM isn’t politics. It’s basic humanity. There is a wrong or a right. No grey areas. Many of these idols use hip hop/rap/r&b in their music. Where do you think these influences come from? The BLACK COMMUNITY. So it’s not good enough to use them as influences for your music then turn around and not support them when they need it the most. Idols need to use their platform for good. I’m not going to lie, I was waiting on BTS to make a statement of some sort because their music is sooooooooooo heavily influenced by Black culture that I almost felt they were required to show support and like the Kings that they are they went above and beyond the call! One of the biggest problems of idols not speaking up about BLM is that so many idols have built their entire careers off of black culture. So many kpop groups would not be here without black people and culture. I mean look at YG. If it weren’t for black culture the entire company would cease to exist. Bigbang would not exist. Blackpink would not exist. Winner, Ikon, 2ne1 etc. All the millions in their bank accounts is thanks to black people and their culture. They all wanna enjoy and profit off black people when it comes to music, dancing, clothes, hairstyles and all the fun stuff but want to ignore all the bad stuff that comes along with it. Nah you can’t pick and choose what you want to engage with when you’re profiting off of a culture built on oppression and struggle. The hypocrisy is insane with some of these artists. And to add my 2 cents; I’m not going to be angry at my idols for not saying anything to support BLM, but saying something against police brutality is something I’d expect from idols that claim to love their fans. I know they have business aspects to think about and aren’t required to risk their career. But fairly, I’m not required to keep supporting them. Silence feels like a slap in the face to be honest.

I was actually surprised that Big Hit and BTS actually came out in support of BLM. Delighted they did, but i have to admit, given the cautious nature of Korean entertainment companies to commit politically, I did not expect it. I think you make a great point about Seo Taji though. Having balls and making statements IS the way to garner international respect. But sometimes you just want something to cheer you up. So yeah, arguments both sides. If any company and artist in S Korea are in a position where they can afford that risk, then it is Big Hit and BTS.

I love what CL posted on her Instagram. It was eloquent, heartfelt and most of all impactful. Paying tribute to the artists that have been inspirations to her, acknowledging that kpop are inspired by black culture whether they acknowledge it or not.

I’ve been trying to get one of my black friends to listen to BTS, he produces music, but he wouldn’t give them a chance bc he accused them of cultural appropriation. I talked to him last night, and he was so thankful for their support, that he will now give them a chance.

I want to see the man's face who hid the camera. After everything that went down from Burning Sun scandal and Jung Joon Young's chat group, you would think that people would be more fearful, especially someone from KBS! It's crazy that Amazon sells these clocks, and they even have the smallest cam that weighs less than an ounce. Pretty sad that when you use a public restroom, that you need to check everywhere to make sure you are not being watched, but this also pertains to hotels/motels. This doesn't just happen in South Korea!

This movement is a stepping stone to change systemic racism. This happens to us Natives (Native "americans") all the time as well with the cops. At a higher percentage rate given our population than even African-americans (the percentages are close). But our voices in our own homeland are never heard. In fact in 2006 the cop who killed Floyd was involved in the shooting death of a Native man, they fired 40 rounds in 4 seconds at his stopped truck, killing him, destroying the truck and leaving the facade of a building with over 42 bullet holes that still remain today. Then lied saying he pulled a shotgun on them, the footage shows him only exiting his vehicle after they shot him up, he died bleeding out on the concrete. There's stories like this all throughout our 200+ Native Nations here in the United States, and we're never heard. That's why we stand in solidarity with this movement.✊🏽 If this movement is successful at the law making and societal level it may benefit Natives and all other minority groups as well.

If the statement "I think the people who are meant to protect us shouldn't kill us" is political, then the problem is so big that anyone with any degree of influence should talk about it.

I don't think kpop idols NEED to speak about something because they're forced to but because they want and they believe in the cause. Their lack of support can also be a consequence of their strict contracts and agency. But I can't lie and say that,if they don't speak about these kind of topics,my support for their future activities will remain the same. In my opinion, they should also be able to talk about Korea's problems. There's this idea that American problems(I know racism doesn't take place only in the us,but the protests started there) are global and everyone should talk about them. I love your different point of views. Its contradictory but you both are on the same path of wanting to put an emphasis and that should represent each and every kpop fans regarding the BLM movement. Every Kpop fan wants to protect their idols, so I think the safest way for them is to mind their own business and not talk about it to keep their image, but on the bigger picture, BTS is a big group and we ARMYs get alot of hates anyway, supporting a good cost especially if we have our boys on our side, we will stand together with them. That's why I am proud I am an Army.

When BTS chose to speak out and use their platform to deliver important message to the people that is because they believe what really matters.. LIFE Whether the other groups will choose to do the same thing or not, it’s up to them..

These Kpop idols and their entrainment labels that did not speak about BLM movement chose the side of the oppressor. This is a human right issue not politics. BLM is not a political issue but rather a human rights issue all over the world. Black people are always treated as less then human and seeing all the Kpop and Khiphop idols speak out has me thinking I stanned the right people and groups. The others that were silent will not be receiving any support of any way from me.

I know that everyone should be educated on BLM, however I don’t feel comfortable pressuring your favs to speak out. There are many Korean artists who organically supported BLM without being told to do so. If your fav is being silent then that’s me assuming their stance on the situation. Why must we beg them after 2 weeks of worldwide protests to now support the cause.

When you were talking about Idols having to talk more about all these issues to be relevant and be the next Seo Taiji, I was thinking about BTS and why they are so relevant/loved and it is basically because they do talk about it. Sometimes not directly by making a statement as they did with the BLM movement but including it on their song or making songs about it. That is one of the many things I love about them, that they "have the balls" to call out injustice, social norms/hierarchy etc... Songs like Dope, silver spoon etc....

I do think that if Kpop artists want to be taken seriously, they have to step it up to talk about serious matters. I admire and respect BTS for stepping up and saying something (and donating). They have worked with African American artists, producers and dancers etc (it shows that they respect their co workers and their fans).. them doing that, everyone is talking about them and ARMY. Internationally, Kpop isn't being taken seriously. But, BTS has been taken seriously and they are not a trend.

First, I’d like to say, Danny, I admire you and I love you. I may cuss you out sometimes but my admiration for the things you say is higher than my irritation at you sometimes, lol. As for #BLM, it is more than just respect for black lives. We’ve been living this way for over 400 years, but what this movement mainly highlights… is POLICE BRUTALITY on everyone. As you saw in the news, it didn’t matter what color the person was when they stood in the way of the police. I want everyone to stand, in order for this to end. Yes, it hits the black community harder, but this affects everyone. There is a poem by a German pastor, Friedrich Gustav Emil Martin Niemöller: “First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out- Because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out- Because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out- Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me-and there was no one left to speak for me.” If the police, their unions, and people who back this behavior are able to continue, what do you think happens, happened, and will happen to people from different countries come to visit? Yes, it would be great to have K-pop artists and their companies speak up. It’s their prerogative not to, but it does send a message that they are more concerned about politics. But get this, the lives of black people or anyone of color being snuffed out prematurely by out-of-control police officers is not politics… it’s a precious life, it’s people, it’s your mom, dad, brother, sister, uncle, aunt, son, or daughter. These are real human lives being taken away from this earth for no other reason than another human being’s reckless behavior. In order for all of us to win, WE have to break and change the system and we can't do that if we don’t all stand together.

i agree with danny, kpop can reach a whole new level if idols were able to speak freely about their views etc. and explore it in their music even. this would help create more individuality which is always more interesting.

I’ve been saying this for years. As an international fan I don’t expect the idols to assimilate to all the countries their music is popular in. Like David said, I’ve always had in my mind that the Korean market is their top priority, international fans get barely anything in comparison. So when things happen that create a conflict in me, like cultural appropriation for example, I simply choose not to engage with it anymore. I’m not here trying to educate an idol so they can be what I want them to be or use their platform, which is focussed in Korea. Will anyone except kpop fans care that this idol donated or that idol posted about it? I appreciate that groups like Monsta X and Ateez, both of whom promote a lot in America, posted to show where they stand on the matter, it was moving to see them be so bold. I’m a black woman before I am a kpop fan. Bottom line is, we should be encouraging our own countries and governments to look at the systematic racism they have created and focus on the people that want to add their voices to the cause, because this issue is further reaching than America and racism is everywhere. Give if you want, talk about it if you want, that’s up to you. You make your choices and I’ll make mine.

I agree with Danny 100% If Kpop remains shallow I honestly don't think it will last long because eventually people will get sick of it. And the thing that attracted me to BTS back in the day was that they actually talked about stuff that was affecting my life at the time with school and not knowing what to do with my life after all that studying. So yeah kpop needs to change.

For me, the most important thing is that BTS tweeted about it after donating! They waited for the money to be checked to tweet and open mouth!!! They took this issue seriously at hand and I value that a lot!!! Also, all those black square with a hashtag is just bullshit! Like that's not activism or that's not supporting! That's just getting sth out of your head! Making yourself feel yeah I did sth!!! I also saw that SM did not pay a black woman producer and I feel very angry about this!!! I really did not like that at all!!! To me, their credibility went down even further than they were! Another thing I wanna say is that it's not only idols that don't talk about Korea or the world's political or societal issues, it's all the celebrities in Korea!!! I do not see actors or actresses taking part or siding with anyone or even comedians unless there's a natural disaster happening. So blaming idols only I don't think it's right. I believe that all the celebrities need to have stence!!! But, Korea compared to the west is very different! We've witnessed in the past they can get a lot of backlash from the general public for opening their mouths.

I feel that kpop idols should speak out on this matter...it is a good influence on the public. Following BTS...army decided to raise a million dollars for the same cause. And I also think we should respect it when idols decide not to. It is their wish in the end their are a lot of issue around the world like in my country muslims are being mistreated I cannot be angry or disappointed at them for not speaking about it.....we should respect idols decision.

New to your channel and wow… all the hard work you do! I’m a simple newish American BTS fan, but I enjoy and respect the hell out of K-pop, the entire industry is interesting from all the good to all the bad. I really really REALLY appreciate both sides you are providing, not is that only amazing, but in my eyes, makes you authentic and trustworthy as all get out. As a black BTS fan, I was not expecting, nor did I need them to say or do anything, so the fact that they did was phenomenal, and that we ARMY matched it is beyond words. That’s power. Personally, for me, I was not looking for support from other ethnicities, I was looking for white people to recognize they have been the long-standing benefactor of the systematic injustices towards black people. Other ethnicities have their struggles and burdens, who am I to say “fight with me” when they have been marginalized as well. Now, this comes from a single, personal, and therefore narrow viewpoint. I do see the big picture and agree that everyone needs to step up, but for me personally, I was looking elsewhere. Do I think that those who have a platform should speak out? Fo sho! Do I see those with a platform still being discriminated against in the US? Fo sho. Is BTS discriminated in America? Sadly, fo sho. Sometimes the comments about me being a BTS fan are shaded in bias and racist views and I fo sho don’t hear them played on mainstream radio. BLM is fighting to end police brutality towards black Americans. When we are healed, we can help heal others, but we do need to heal to begin with. I truly believe that this will open the door for other movements that are long long overdue. Others who are marginalized, whether that is in the united states, or in their own respective countries, hopefully, can access the support of humanity as BLM currently is. We all come from different views, motives, and ideas. We are all having a unique experience with this. What may be more impactful is we are all are taking a long hard look at those views, motives and ideas and making more conscious choices as well as being held accountable. The fact that kpop idols and companies use black culture and don’t feel the need to say something is extremely frustrating. Especially SM they always use black people to make their music and black styles so it’s incredible delusional to think that silence is okay.

I think Bighit's tweet on BLM also counters the arguement the haters come up with that it's always Bighit who apologizes not the Artist. I am happy to see that it's also Bighit and the whole group who support BLM, not an individual, without leaving a chance of saying that "it was Artist's personal opinion", if anything goes wrong. Wow this conversation was amazing. Like legitimately love the perspective of what you guys were saying about the K-pop industry and idols speaking and not speaking on issues. As a poc I thought that’s why idols weren’t speaking. I am glad it’s confirmed to me. And just to add that quiet idols and company’s aren’t fooling any poc or black fans. It’s actually so sad how kpop artists have to silenced mostly bc of the companies. Look at the difference between American artists and kpop artists.
