Even though American Hustle Life has cringey moments, I still think this was a good experience for BTS because they got to see the origins of Hip Hop, which did start in America, and they learned a lot and got some really good connections. I do think this was an important learning experience for them and because South Korea does use the Western Hip Hop culture as a significant source of their music, they needed to know about this part of it. I do think Coolio was a bit harsh, but the overall experience was good for them. They also honed some of their skills, acquired some new skills, and got some promotion and connections. They also did an album while they were there, Dark and Wild. I do think they worked super hard, and I wish they could have had a break.

There was some funny moments that made up for it. Definitely some cringe. But they needed the experience at the time.

The kidnapping prank they did on American Hustle Life was no joke and I felt so bad for them. Jungkook and J-Hope looked so scared and Jungkook even said after it happened he was worried he was going to be sold and never see his family again. And keep in mind at this point Jungkook was only 16 years old. One person I do love on American Hustle Life is Miss Iris and her love for V's voice. I'm glad she boosted V's confidence instead of crushing it like Coolio.

Yeah, that prank was NOT funny. Whoever's idea that was, it was a terrible idea.

Exactly. At one point I got annoyed at coolio, reality tv show or not, as the reactor said this could be a culture shock to BTS after learning the real side of hip hop and its culture, I would have appreciated it more if they toned down the rudeness.

the funny thing is that BTS went against everything kpop was supposed to be. That's why it rained down so much hate on them from the beginning. They did things their own way and I think that's the main reason why BTS got all the success they have now.

the clip of them looking at and talking about the fireworks always gets me. they went from being like "I wonder how much that costs" to having them every night at the end of concerts so that army won't be sad when they have to leave. like pls why are they just so pure and wholesome?

In "American Hustle" life Coolio was mad disrespectful to them and there were even cringier parts of the series...hard to watch but it ended up being a good experience for them later in the series. I think it's an important thing to watch to see their earlier journey . While they were shooting this reality show they were also recording their "Dark and Wild" album at night (partially in a garage and partially in a borrowed studio). Iris Stevenson who was working with them while playing the piano, was the inspiration for the movie "Sister Act". She was so good with them. To this day you always hear BTS saying "we will work harder" and I think to myself "how much harder could they possibly work???"
@its_caraina

They also worked with Erik for their Map of the Soul: 7 album. In the "On" Commentary Film, they go behind the scenes for the ON manifesto film and recording other songs on the album.

A lot of people don’t like watching BTS in American Hustle Life because of Coolio with V and a couple of other things in the first few episodes. But once you get past that, they really do have a good time and learn a lot!

Admitting up front that I have only seen these clips from AHL, I’ve pondered about the way Coolio treating them being as much a lack of knowledge in Korean culture as they had about Hip Hop culture. You know with us Americans sometimes you have to that “lay it down” to really drive the point (I love American, but we don’t always immediately respect our elders, or have a deep drive. Just being honest), whereas these guys I think come from a culture that would have respected, listened and learned pretty much with a word. It’s the push ups that get to me a little, but probably wouldn’t bother me near as much if I didn’t know already how hard they would be willing to work to please without extra incentive so to speak. I believe by the end Coolio actually really liked them. He was definitely impressed that they studied and knew the answers to all his questions by the next day. I think they did have fun. Tony and Nate clearly loved working with the guys. Just a random pondering I’ve had on this episode. Edited just to add, I don’t have any problems with Coolio being passionate about what he’s dedicated his life to and, as he said, saved his life. Just want to be clear about that. It’s literally just the push-ups that get me a little but probably aren’t really a big deal in the scheme of life.
@al5923
@al5923 3 года назад
It's interesting you mention the cultural differences, because I have the opposite opinion. Different cultures, but the behavior expectations are the same. V was disrespectful with his "Turn up. Let's go party" comment. The pushups were a response to let the room know that he insists upon respect. Look back at Bangtan's behavior when Bang PD speaks to them. Standing up straight, at full attention. Why are expectations lower when Coolio walks in? He is an elder who has taken his time to mentor them. I honestly don't think V would have been so casual with a Korean mentor. Another thing about the pushups - it could also be a cultural thing, because I've seen men demand push ups from their son's and nephews - but I also grew up on Army bases, so I don't know. It wasn't weird to me. ALSO I fully believe Coolio was putting on a tough act for the cameras, because that's what reality tv was like at the time. You had to have a "mean" judge.
@melissaotto7873
@melissaotto7873 3 года назад
@@al5923 Thank you for your thoughts. That is an interesting way to look at it too. For the push ups I know it is really normal for Americans. I have been volunteering with youth for years and my brother is a coach, so definitely see it as really common, even jokingly, to “give me 25”. I just don’t know how common that might be in Korean culture. Maybe really common there as well. I have no idea. I do think his tone alone would have them straight in an instant. But, like you said, TV and all. And I really did appreciate hearing your thoughts/ perspective.

AHL was a very special experience for BTS. There are moments when they were treated badly but that happens in life too. Some people are rude or nasty but it is how you learn to deal with them that is important , an excellent lesson for BTS. In the series l loved the kidnapping of BTS and the concert at the end the most ,they didn’t show either in this episode, It is well worth watching l think there is about 8 episodes in all.

Watching edited videos like this is the fastest way to get to know BTS. Because there are thousands of contents from pre-debut out there. Yes, everything is uploaded online and many of the early stuffs, including interviews, don't even have subtitles. Those with no subs were translated in txt form on twitter and other platforms, but it's hard to watch everything, really. That's why we're lucky that there are plenty of ARMY editors who compile introduction videos like this. They do a good job in giving us something we can use to make people more interested in BTS. It took me about 3 yrs of watching at least 1hr every night to catch up on all official releases, including all the free contents on Bangtan TV. The music is easy because I could just listen to them while working, including their gold mine in soundcloud. Anyway, i enjoyed watching this again with you. I now watch at least 1 BTS reaction every night before going to sleep. BTS and reactions help me relax because I always smile and laugh. A good condition to be in before going to sleep.

They actually use a private jet when they go on tour now ^^ it's mostly due to the fact that some fans were trying to book the sits next to them to take pictures and all, making the flights very uncomfortable for them 😬

It's sad to see them working so hard on that album knowing that it wasn't well-received by the public and was heavily criticized when it came out, only armys liked it but the fandom was too small to help in its performance. Imagine putting all that work and not getting anything in return. They even had to change their sound and come up with something different after this album because they were unsure if their career would end if they performed poorly again. It was a hard time for them.

In early 2015 I was looking for an episode of a reality show by the group 2PM when I accidentally found American Hustle Life. I sat and watched the whole thing - my introduction to BTS. Back then the episodes were hard to find and were cut up and some were bad quality, but I got through the series. I'm still amazed that I kept following them after AHL. Lol.
@raeavilez9936

I'm probably repeating some of what was already said but idc lol! Coolio was a horrible teacher. As a teacher I feel like he did the opposite of what he should have done every time. Other than the hip-hop quiz. I feel like they expected the members to be like American teens, but BTS has always known how to work hard. Warren G did a great job with the members. He got them out of their comfort zones with a lot of those missions. That had them learning a lot. And their tutors were all really amazing too, especially Iris. Two years later and the boys mentioned Tony and Nate in a vlog, wondering how they were doing and saying how much they missed them. But the part that gets me every time is the trip to skid row. I love the fact that Tony and Nate ask for words of wisedom and advice for the food that was given. That made such an impression on the members. Its why they are so charitable now, or I believe that is when they started. And that is why Army is the same way. That and the fireworks. The guys fell in love with fireworks then and that's why they are included in the concerts now.

I knew you would dig seeing the boys learning and improving with some early signs of how hard they work and like with suga explaining how they were thinking about their music and his mentality about creating music…. And truly how open and willing they were to all of it… I mean beat boxing to the sound of a dog barking? But they did it regardless and actually practiced when they were so busy and tired… seeing how early this was and how devoted and open they were just made me fall in love with them and who they are as people. I would highly recommend watching “American hustle life,” shows more of what they did and kinda how it all worked… I’d say there were like three moments that I was not happy with something happening… but I’d say the majority was great and you could really see them growing… even though they were tired and stuff even from jin and vs logs… they felt like they had a better understanding and were really growing and feeling more confident and that’s just a beautiful thing to see! I watched American hustle life on RU-vid lol I like there’s like 6 episodes and the 7th I had to watch it broken down on a channel but that’s how I saw it and would def say it’s worth watching… it’s super inspiring seeing what they were doing and seeing who they are today… I think you’d like it for sure

I’m really glad you’re doing this series and enjoying it! It’s seriously so well done. (I’m excited, I believe chapter 13 is coming out this week after the series went on a hiatus!) I don’t know where AHL aired - I personally watched it on dailymotion haha! If you do want to watch the whole thing, just a warning the first episode is the worst one in my opinion where they played a pretty cruel and unnecessarily scary prank on them, but all in all I think they had fun and learned a lot, and they’ve said how much of a valuable experience it was. It still seems exhausting since they recorded their first full-length album dark & wild and did all this at the same time! And yes, they were still super young here! JK was 16, Jimin and V were both 18 and RM was 19.

You can add things like bathroom, name of hotel, and such to it. Most people will be so happy they will try to figure out how to help you. When looking at restaurants if the menus outside are in native language only it is likely no one speaks English in the restaurant. If they are printed in both native and English likely someone knows at least basic English. 😊

But you can see more their off-stage activities in their shows such as Bon Voyage (travel/trips), In The Shoop(at vacation house during pandemic), Run BTS (variety show) and some documentaries such as Burn The Stage, Break The Silence. I like how BTS lets us see a glimpse of their lives outside music and they are 101% FUN to watch. It makes us feel like we know them personally.

It was reality TV (AHL) but keep in mind it wasn't for American consumption. I'm not sure they have the same style?

The comments about Suga b-boying always make me so curious as to what he could really do. He unfortunately had to stop after he basically destroyed his shoulder in a car accident which then went untreated for over a month. Luckily he was able to receive a surgery to help fix it late last year so he is now, for the first time since debut, performing without shoulder pain.

The fear you talk about at 52:50 I would say is actually part of why there's so much backlash for AHL, so far the video hasn't shown it (so I can't imagine them doing it in the rest of an extra scenes video,) but imagine that fear of being in a place unfamiliar to you where people speak another language and you get kidnapped... In hindsight they can laugh about it knowing it was fake, but watching the boys scared shitless during the prank isn't fun and didn't teach them anything but fear, it's sad because of that it leaves such a sour taste in ARMY even when we know AHL was an good learning experience for our boys at the time. 💀

I don't know if you'll see this but personally American Hustle life was mostly good. Yes, there were some pretty cringy stuff in it but generally it taught the boys some really really good lessons. However, the episodes with Coolio, I hated. Everyone else was nice and respectful when teaching the boys, Coolio on the other hand was rude and really mean. He could have taught them in a better way. This is just my personal opinion though.

Hi! I watched all of AHL on Patreon now. Besides for the first episode and a half, I actually thought it was a good show. You could tell there clearly were changes made half way through shooting episode 2. The mentors after episode 2 were all fantastic and the boys learned a lot! Thanks for watching!

To further my point, Waren G is also a Hip Hop artist (maybe a different back ground than Coolio i don't know their back stories), but he was really respectful to the boys and it showed that he wanted to teach them. He was able to get across what he wanted without degrading the boys and put up this matcho front of intimidation. I get that coolio wanted to show them how important hip hop was to him, but rather than being a good teacher, to me, he more came off as a sulky baby. It was less of trying to teach them/ help them understand, and more of "why don't you get it? You should know this shit. how dare you" etc. Granted he did eventually teach them some good stuff, it was just hard to see past his initial/ first impression

Can you react to “BTS vs Kpop” by bby gang as well as his three part series titled You’re Wrong About Kpop/The Media Is Wrong About Kpop/Kpop vs Orientalism? His videos are utterly phenomenal, and I’d love it if you could check out his other videos out as well about Kpop & BTS. They are so well-researched and non biased. He does the work that so many western reporters don’t when researching and explaining BTS and Kpop. He encapsulates so well how truly phenomenal BTS is in the Kpop industry, the pop industry, and the music industry as a whole. It helps that with how well he does his research, he shows so much respect for eastern concepts and their impact on the western world. It’s beautiful. One of the best Kpop/BTS videos I have ever seen.

Hi I am back. Good reaction, ty. Yep, American Hustle Life aired. I think you can watch it on Weverse. Even though some parts are cringe I think it was a very valuable experience for them. They really learned a lot and grew as artist's. JK actually got to travel to LA on his own for training I learned in another video. I think that is really cool. They so funny. I love them! Reed Reacts did an interview with Aneesa the Rise of Bangtan creator. Check it out if u have not watched it yet. You learn a lot about her inspiration for this series. Love u. stay safe. --baby ARMY NY USA 💜 #YouAreEnough

@10:00 some of AHL was definitely scripted. Coolio was a bit cringe in the series, but I definitely understand where he was coming from because hiphop and rap is integral part of black culture and his life that he wanted V to take his lessons more seriously. V is my bias and if you watch the whole series he’s hilarious but there were moments he was not taking it seriously and just wanted to have fun. Yes Coolio took it a bit too far, but if you watch Coolio’s interactions w/V he was annoyed by him for playing around too much, but you could tell V was like that class clown student that would get in trouble allot but was secretly the teacher’s favorite. Even when V dressed up like Coolio I prob would have been annoyed too if I was Coolio bc even though V didn’t mean anything by it bc he was just having fun I can understand how it might be perceived as mocking etc. even though Coolio turned around and didn’t want to look at V during that lesson you could tell from Coolio’s expression he was trying to hold in his laugh too. I know allot of ARMY’s are upset with the way they felt V was treated, but Coolio wasn’t evil to the boys either, but definitely a terrible communicator and egomaniac! We could see at the end how much V grew too..and he had beautiful interactions with many of their mentors like teacher Iris, Nate, Tony, Warren G and their moments getting advice from the homeless living on skid row was very moving.

I think one of the reasons V didn't take it too seriously was the fact that he always thought of himself as a singer not a rapper. That and his playful nature made him of course a target for Coolio's more serious approach to rap and hip hop. But yeah that definitely made V my bias as well.

I'm not a fan of Coolio as an artist and I certainly am not a fan of him as a person, after the way he treated the boys for those 2 weeks, especially V. They had advisors to help them with the challenges that Coolio came up with but some of what they did was rude or insulting. The "advisors" didn't stop them from doing it anyway. One of the advisors even hit Jin and left Jin and Suga to figure things out on their own. They really did have some good experiences during those two weeks, but it started out with them being terrified out of their minds. And you can see just how much of an ass Coolio was at times.

The scenes with Coolio always give me high anxiety to watch and I hate the way he treated them and mostly V, you don't have to be an ass to teach that certain lesson/message he was trying to get across. Especially with the language barrier

Every time I see this it just makes me dislike Coolio more. He's acting all offended because they couldn't answer his questions, and I'm over here going, dude, they don't speak English. Look at their faces. They might know the answer if they understood what you were asking. I feel like V tried connecting with Coolio with the limited English phrasing he was familiar with, and Coolio took it as an insult. I can't tell if the guy is just being intentionally dense for the sake of drama, or he's that clueless, but when I look at how humble the boys are (to this day!) compared with American celebrities, I can see why BTS gets the love they do from their fans. I've never seen them try to tear others down, even if they probably deserved it. Even if they're the most talented and famous people in the room, they treat everyone with respect and usually just talk about how they'll try harder or do better and shout out to ARMY for getting them where they are. Coolio thinks he's the smartest person in the room because he could answer a question he made up that seven Korean boys, six of whom barely spoke English, didn't even understand.
