BTS- The Rise of Bangtan Chapter 5 Live Reaction. 

Tonight those boys who were wondering if they would ever be taken seriously as real artists won Artist of the Year at the American Music Awards. Bangtan has come a long way and they’ve earned it.

You were surprised that they already had fans in America but in the clip, they were surprised themselves. Lol. Series had some angering moments but you get to see them being themselves so worth watching. They actually stayed true to the advices from the homeless men.

During their stay in LA they didn't have nice rooms because remember at this point of time there company was still poor, they even recorded the next album In a garage in LA while still there. Oh and the fans at the airport was because bts are more known internationally even back then

“…give them a hotel room!” Dude, I don’t think you realize how much strapped for cash they are at this point in their careers. As mentioned here, they were planning on (and already started to) recording their album in a garage if Bang PD’s friend hadn’t so generously offered his studio. Besides, it’s set up is more like a hip-hop boot camp of sorts for the tv program

So weird to watch them receive rookie awards when tonight they won their first Artist Of The Year in the US. I'm so proud. Keep making history. 💜

About the grocery thing, another instance that I have observed with the boys as a testament to their upstanding character is the “grocery cart test”. I have seen in more than one occasion them returning the carts properly in where they are stationed and also returning cardboard boxes after using temporarily for hauling, cleaning up after themselves and wiping down their tables after eating in fast food restos etc. These little things really endear me to their humble and overall good guy personalities 💜

The first 2 episodes of American Hustle Life are trash, because of Coolio and what the producers of the show did to them. I have always believed that Bang PD stepped in and demanded that the show give them some respect. After that, the show was really pretty good, especially their interactions with their teachers and Nate and Tony. Definitely worth checking out, but be prepared to be really pissed off for the first 2 episodes.

Hi, Jim! Just wanted to comment on Jin using scissors for the vegetables. It's common for Koreans to use kitchen scissors to prepare their food. If you go to a place that serves Korean barbecue, one of the utensils you'll get are kitchen scissors to cut up the meat on the grill. It's just very convenient. I highly recommend trying Korean barbecue if you haven't yet. It's a fun eating experience. 😊

I agree that the first couple of episodes where tough to watch because of how the guys were treated, but the series does help the guys learn and grow as artists. They’ve always been respectful of the hip hop culture and history. The lessons they learned on AHL is part of their growth. So it’s worth watching! Interesting facts: The movie Sister Act 2 was based on the vocal teacher, Iris Stevenson’s life. Aneesa the creator of The Rise of Bangtan, was 207th person in line to try to attend the free BTS concert at the Troubadour which was featured the finale of AHL. She didn’t get in bc the cut off was 200 people. She said BTS really didn’t need to pass out flyers on LA streets for this concert bc it got posted on social media and the early ARMYs got in line! BTS did it anyway to learn what it was like to have to really hustle to promote their show.

ABSOLUTELY!!! I'm so glad to hear that u r deciding to watch American Hustle Life!!! I was just going to say that though it may be cringy for some ppl, if u want to be a "real/true Army", u should still watch it. IDKY some ppl, especially "Grown Armys", would tell "Baby Armys" not to watch this show. Trust me, ur not the only one who was told not to watch this show. I honestly feel that what they did on this show & what they learned on this show help shape who they r nowadays, especially their morals & values in life & society. So YES!!! It’s 3am and I have school, but you should watch: BTS in the soop, BTS Bon voyage, and Run BTS for a more relaxed side of bts

Bts has their own variety show, Run BTS ( it's about them playing, cooking and just enjoying. Also them playing and fighting for snacks😂) Bon voyage ( it's them travelling and just doing what they want) In the soop ( they're just staying in a forest place where they're just showing their everyday lives) Overall it so good and fun to watch. You'll see them being chaotic and crackheads😂

Winning all three awards they were nominated for tonight at the AMAs and they remain just as humble and just as happy about their win. On top of this show (where they had to do a ton of challenges) they were also recording Dark and Wild at night. Yea, I thought Coolio was a dick and there were even cringier parts of the show, but they had some amazing mentors along the way. Yes watch it...it helped shape them...don't be put off by the first 3 episodes...it gets way better. I remember Hitman Bang say that they invested everything they had into this trip and the making of the album at the same time and he had no clue what they would do if the album failed.Yes they have remained humble (and philanthropic) throughout their career no matter how successful they have become.

AHL is cringy but worth it. I actually really love it because it was basically my introduction to BTS. In 2016 I saw a reaction video that was to a bunch of different Kpop. BTS stuck out to me so I decided to look up one of their songs along with the lyrics. It was like they stole a page from my journal. I really liked their lyrics I watched a few more videos checked out some interviews. Back then there used to be compilations of them speaking English which is what I gravitated towards because I had never really consumed content in another language before. Nearly all the clips were from American Hustle life so I decided to watch the show. Literally my first 3 days of discovering BTS I spent binge watch the show plus ever single music video to that date. It’s how I got to know them, their names, their humor, their music and what they stand for really fast. Back then I didn’t know enough about them to find it cringy. except people were being obviously rude and awful to them. But over all there was a lot more good in that show then bad. It’s how I first got to know the boys so it will always have a special place in my heart

Bts were so out of their comfort zone in this show, and everything was so raw. These are the type of content that make people feel like they know bts, and trust who they are behind the scenes. A lot of other groups including bts made reality shows after their success but non raw like this. Btw don't forget how young and unseasoned they were around this time

idk why ppl keep saying its cringey their are some cringey moments and some angering or frustrating moments but majority of it is a great show. it really did help bts understand hip hop better because you need to respect the culture and people in order to then use that culture for your own profit. otherwise its disrespectful to say the least. so many newer rappers especially ones from other cultures that arent black dont truly know anything about hip hop culture but use the genre as a way to make money and thats wrong. even if people dont like the show they need to show respect to hip hop culture. and see it as a huge part of bts success/story.

Their humble apprentice mindset was significant in their growth. It’s very Asian to learn as much as you can from “masters” when given the opportunity. Learning is a privilege. Expect it to be hard! So they were sincere in wanting to immerse themselves in Hiphop culture. They also learned from a soul singing coach, as you saw. (The same guy who let them work in his studio in LA was involved in recording brass band and vocal segments for their 2020 album: Tracks such as ON, and EGO). There is a gem of a documentary on that production project. Old friendships rooted in respect. Out of that bootcamp style of workshopping, came Dark & Wild. A track in this album is Hiphop phile (lover). Do check it out (live version). You’ll see how their love of Hiphop comes off much more convincing and passionate because they understand where it came from. They also wrote their gut-wrenching stories in Born Singer (authentic Hiphop in its character and raw feelings).

Run BTS is the best to see their personalities well . It is a enjoyable show , I love it

I've watched the American Hustle Life with BTS and it turned out it wasn't a bad experience for BTS. The video showed insightful moments of BTS staying in the US learning something :-) Watching BTS content with you has been somehow a better interpretation and more understanding of BTS. Trust me the company was still broke at the time. Remember they almost went bankrupt so they wouldn't see the fruits of their labour just a year in. Even 2 years after they debuted they still had to use their managers as actors in their mvs, also had to use their cars

I think Coolio was so tough on them because Kpop in it's creation took black music such as rap hip hop and rnb to appeal to the west, BTS went to L.A to learn about the roots of Kpop a.k.a black culture and show more appreciation for the artform so Coolio was probably being aggressive because they didn't know the history of hip hop but they eventually studied and learned throughout their stay in L.A. It's also one of the many reasons why BTS are so popular, because they are one of the HANDFUL of artists in Korea that actually understand and show appreciation to black people for basically being the blueprint for Kpop.

American Hustle Life is pretty divisive among the fans, but honestly I truly believe that it was great - they're young boys, putting wannabe hip hop guys in to a hip hop boot camp style trip and honestly I think it helped these guys grow in to who they are today and learned some awesome lessons. Most of all, all of these guys SHINE with their personalities, attitudes, and actually all the people involved seem really cool. Bang truly made sure that these guys grew up good and humble, which means not treating them like spoiled Prince's but teaching life lessons and AHL helped many of the members become confident kids. I love it - can't wait to watch you react to it :D also the beds - that was better conditions than their dorm in Korea at that point tbh lol

They very early on dedicated a lot of efforts into their international presence. They have always had equal if not more fandom internationally

I think AHL was so good for BTS. They leant so much and experienced something totally different from what they were used to. Some people were a bit harsh and at times down right rude to them but that was also a lesson well leant. Not everyone will be nice and love them because they are idols.They actually were doing a reality show and recording an album as well as organise a free show for their fans so they were very busy. Well worth watching in my opinion. So much more in the series than what was shown here.

That is why watching their reality shows like bon voyage, run bts and in the soop makes me so happy just seeing them relaxing, being themselves, showing how funny they can be and them being a family. It at least takes them out from "normal work routines".

Due to the fact it shows what they went through etc. The reason why a lot of ARMY don't like it is because, even though BTS were rookies they didn't get treated with respect. In the beginning they were not that succesfull. The company was poor too and was at one point even bankrupt. This was BTS when the company and BTS were poor and learning everything the hard way. Wtaching American Hustle Life and any of their reality shows is great cause you see the things that have shaped thenm into the men they are today.... some parts of AHL will make you angry, sad, happy, cringy... overall they said they valued the experience.... they always treat others with respect and always thank staff, etc. people love working with them for that reason....some tutors were great - others not.... Iris Stevenson was the woman who inspired the movie Sister Act 2... her words meant a lot to Tae who was struggling at times with confidence in his voice. Can't wait to watch AHL with you... Actually, BTS has ALWAYS been more popular overseas than they have been in Korea. Its really sad but even in 2017-2018, most people in South Korea didnt know them. They knew the name BTS, but most people when asked, couldnt even name a member and hardly a song of theirs. I live in FINLAND, but i managed to find them from RU-vid in 2015. So yeah, the international ARMY has always been a real "hard carry" for BTS. This is one of those things that sets them apart from the other groups. Usually groups establish themselves domestically first and then try to gain international following, but with BTS it was the other way around.

AHL wasn't so bad for me. It was my introduction to the group because I was intrigued by them. Despite certain situations they were always respectful, hardworking, showed good values and they shared a bond I hadn't seen in young men for a long time ( especially in the entertainment industry). I learnt from them. So I looked into them and have been ARMY ever since.

Hey I'm American and I return stuff that I don't need to the proper isle at the grocery 😊 Never crossed my mind but it's just the courteous thing to do. Also, I'm glad you're reacting to AHL. You're right - you get to see a different side to the boys and watch them learn & adapt to the several challenges they had to face while on the show. BTS are such good people, humble and endearing, you can't help but fall more in love with them the more you get to know them.

Scissors are used to cut food in Korea - it’s common practice there and also in Korean restaurants they will leave a pair at your table. Kitchen shears are not used like that here, but I started using them and they are very useful!

If u want to see bts play and have fun like u said u want at the beginning, it's all in the deleted scenes and bonus content! It's really worth watching along the episodes, it gives more context to everything and it's also bts having fun.

People always say it’s cringe but as someone who watched it when it just came out, it was just bad in the beginning but everything else wasn’t that cringe to us back then. Just some small parts, but not bad enough to stop me from watching it 5 more times. It’s such a fundamental piece of who they became after this.

Having spent time in other countries, It's important to understand that Seniors have the right to questions and hold Juniors to a high standard. Right from the start you do not disrespect a Senior Artist. You have to show deference because a Senior has so much to teach you if you are open to what they have to teach. It's not American but in other cultures right from the start one who is the elder is one you do not joke with at least not when you first meet them. One thing I love about BTS is that they respect Black culture and give honor to the roots of some of the music they make. You may not like how Coolio talked to them when they first met him but he is the elder in this relationship and you show respect for a man who knows more then you. ( in short don't dis a back man by how you meet him and talk to him. RM knew that) It does not matter if they are going to be the best in the world much of their music has roots in the music of the black culture. So many white artist don't get that but BTS does and honors that. Look how respectful they were at the AMA's when it came to Legends of the boy groups who performed. I so love these guys for that.

"Dark & Wild" is one of their best albums in my opinion. And I own & love all of their albums! I 100% guarantee you'll love it too! "School love affair " is also great! You're gonna have fun!

You can watch AHL if you want, it really shows a personal side to them. And you were asking about the blankets and i think it was this was in 2014, and back then BigHit was a VERY SMALL company, so their budget was small. It is said that around 2015 bighit was almost bankrupt. And this reality shows was filmed after the release of Skool Luv Affair and their first anniversary.

Whenever someone I know wants to know more about BTS (after watching introductions to BTS, etc) & asks for content recommendations, I always include AHL. It may be cringy at times, but it shouldn't be skipped. That's definitely a no- brainer. It's an integral part of their journey & is just as important to watch as Run BTS, Bon Voyage, In The Soop, etc. I see that you are being very protective of our boys. It's understandable & quite endearing to see. However, I hope you always keep in mind that whatever their work conditions may seem, our boys always have a voice. As ARMY, we live by these words: "TRUST BTS". Whenever things seem questionable, we always remember to trust our boys. I've been following your journey from the get- go & it's been a treat. The show can be a bit cringey, BUT it really showcase their journey and growth as Artists. 💜

The thing about "reality" shows like American Hustle Life is that certain things get played up or even engineered to create drama. There was at least one person on the show that we know of who came out later saying the show's producers told him to purposefully be mean to Jimin. I know nothing about Coolio as a human being, but I wouldn't be surprised if the show told him to act like a jerk to the boys to cause controversy and drama and make the show more "exciting" 😕 In regards to their international fans, they definitely gained more attention from fans outside of Korea through their use of RU-vid and Twitter, but they were by no means a "big deal" at this point. They were still struggling with financial problems, and even though they won several Rookie of the Year type awards, they were not being acknowledged by the industry or the media since they were from a small company.

I don't think you have really grasped how small their company and they were when they started. Big Hit really didn't have a lot of money until at least 2015/2016. This episode was based in 2014 as you saw the beginning of the episode was them celebrating their 1 year anniversary.

They were still a small company then, their first year after debut. Just their company doing its best to give the guys a taste of American Hustle life, some training they can really use and remember so they'll work harder and fulfill their dreams.

They were more famous internationally than in their own country for a while. Numbers wise at least. They were a HUGE hit in KCon in 2014 in LA. HUGE. That’s a show with a bunch of idols in the lineup. While in Korea their success was blocked off from the public by the industry. They weren’t recognized until late 2018. Even then with back handed complements and junk. It was ridiculous

2014 BTS watching fireworks surely didn't years later they will be putting out one of the best firework shows in their concert

Yes, watch American Hustle Life. It's a little harsh but the guys took every challenge seriously and grew from it. The first episode I was really angry at how they were being treated but I pushed through and was happy I watched all of the episodes.

I’m always in two minds about things like returning trolleys or groceries, or clearing trays at a fast food restaurant. On one hand, doing it just seems polite, on the other hand it can potentially create more employment (I always avoid using self-service checkouts if possible, for this reason).

Absolutely agree with your comments that you get to know more about them as human beings by watching American hustle life. You'll see why they would never trash hotel rooms or take staff who have everyday jobs for granted

Hi, I am back. Good reaction, ty. The 1st 2 albums were EPs actually. After they published a full length album. They worked on the full length album in American Hustle Life. It has great songs really! Danger is a fav. 🥰 American Hustle life was important. I feel like they learned a lot of very valuable lessons being here. Yes, it was cringe but beneficial nonetheless. Iris by the way is the lady that inspired Sister Act! I love those movies. I plan to watch this show eventually too. Like Jin can beat box come on! That is so cool. Yeah you should really see how they really arrived in LA, I believe it was the first night and it was planned to fake kidnap them. These "kidnappers" drove them to their current room throughout the show and intimated them. Then left them in the room with the 7 bunks and they went to sleep. It was terrible, I felt so bad they looked terrified. Stupid prank.

I've only had something to put back in the store a couple times and realized at the register. I don't feel comfortable putting it back myself - when do you do it? You don't want to hold up the line, so you finish paying. Then I don't want to go back into the isles after I've paid because I would have to take my paid items with me - I don't want to confuse security about possible shoplifting. It would be easier to put something back on she shelf if you were with someone to stay with the paid things.

So you didn't get the full picture from video because the way it is edited. Im pretty sure they told him to be tuff on them. They were going to a hip hope group but didn't know hardly anything about hip hop at the time. So this was a teaching moment to respect the art they were trying to do.

I did start watching from the start and boy I can’t believed it’s been more than a year or 2 years already since you started doing reactions to BTS. But still, I started from the bottom of ur reactions and I’m really loving it. As cringy as this show was, BTS actually emerged from it more experienced and it made them stronger and more humble in the long run. The fact that some of their best records came after this reality show is a testament that it evoked their creativity and emotions.

Ahh overall there was a lot of cringy bits in the show, but I do think it's worth watching bc of all these glimpses of young bts and their dedication as growing artists. At the same time that was going on they were also working on their first full length album (The three previous albums were actually EP's). It could just be me, but personally I hear slight influence of their time on the show in the album, which is why it comes thru to me as even more genuine. Armys in 2013/2014 were (and still are) very passionate, hence the people at the airport. Kpop was already a thing in the US at the time, but it was something that was definitely considered niche in 2013.

Japanese and Koreans put back things at stores. They fold back clothes and put it back on the shelf. Something i learnt from them.

BTS was popular internationally before making it Korea.

So happy that you’ve decided to give AHL a chance! I know you’ll enjoy it if you can look beyond all the “cringey” things everyone is talking about.

They did this in 2014. I think they had 200 fans for their free concert in America. They were growing steadily. If u pay attention to the series one of the interviewers stated that a question shows up on the Korean google when are they debuting? when u put in BTS! That just blew my mind. 0.0 And remember 350 fans showed up at fan meet more than was expected. It was slow nd steady but they had momentum. =0)

American Hustle Life is hard to watch since it has questionable moments (the fake kidnapping) and is cringey as hell but I highly recommend watching it if you're going down the rabbit hole for BTS full history. A lot of fans I've come across didn't or haven't watched it at all so they're missing an important part of BTS background that really differentiates them from other Idol Groups.

Honestly, I had my doubts about AHL as well when I first started my BTS journey. I had heard that it was cringy and terrible and to avoid it like the plague. But clips like some of these, made me think that it may be worth watching. So I did. Was it cringey? Hell yes. Were there moments I hated where it seemed like they were being treated badly? Hell yes. However, despite all of that, you also have to realize that it is a "reality" show. And with that comes people and producers who believe there needs to be drama. (As if BTS are not dramatic enough on their own, though I suppose they grew into that more once they started filming Run BTS). I'm sure that some of it was real and other parts were scripted with people being told to treat them in a certain way. But the series also has it's thoughtful moments and times where you can see them learning things that helped them become the amazing men they are today. Is AHL an amazing show? Not really. But it is an important part of BTS's history and a part of who they were and who they are. I had a hard time getting through some of it, but I don't for a second regret watching it and understanding what they went through just that little bit more. If you want to watch it, I say, absolutely, just know that there is cringe and if you can make I through that, just concentrate on the good learning moments.

Watch In The Soop S2, you can see a more laid back BTS and a lot of cooking with the members. While in the their show Bon Voyage BTS, it gives us a glimpse of their international travels and what they does. You can see how they spend their day and how they just love hanging out or having each other. Jin and Suga cooking and V washing the dishes and the other members do their fair share too.

American Hustle Life can be abit cringy to come but personally it holds a special place in my heart as it was what introduced me to the boy’s personalities. I binge watched the show when i first found BTS. Unrelated but you have a beautiful home.

Sorry, I'm Team Coolio on this one. In a pre-interview, the boys were asked what hip-hop was and Jungkook said "black" (referring to the color of their debut wardrobe) and Tae said "handsome." They NEEDED the education. If they were going to take on the mantel of hip hop, they had to learn that it was steeped in Black America. It's political, it's cultural, it's the history of a people. Coolio wasn't rude. He was incredibly skeptical of a bunch of young, non-black men purporting to be "hip hop artists" with apparently no understanding of the craft & its history. He was trying to make them understand how serious this was for him and he had every right to do so. He's an OG. He's a pioneer of hip hop. He faced down critics who said rap was explicit and not artistic on its face. Kpop has a history of robbing black culture blind and mocking it, exploiting it, taking credit for it. Just a couple of weeks ago a major kpop group said hip hop was "swag and cool stuff and words like that..." -_- I will never be anything but grateful Coolio sat our boys down and made them understand that hip hop wasn't just an aesthetic. It's largely thanks to him and AHL (and our boys' willingness to take on the lesson) that BTS' hip hop has been relatively unproblematic especially compared to the rest of kpop. And the boys have said repeatedly how AHL helped them grow as artists. PLUS, BTS are used to tough love. Mr. Son (their performance director from Day 1 recently told a room full of children who were dancing their asses off that they were "the worst of the worse"--it's just a more frank culture). So it wasn't a big deal. But all these sensitive Karens from Nowhere, Colorado want to scream "he was mean to my babies" and demand people not watch the series (most without ever having seen it themselves). It's part of their history. The boys are the same kind, goofy, fun, hard-working boys they've always been and you really get to see especially Jin, Tae, and Hobi shine through the series. There's so much heart and humor and growth there. I promise, you're going to watch it and wonder what everyone was getting all worked up about.

I really don’t understand why people say AHL was cringy. Instead of portraying a lifestyle they clear didn’t have a lot of knowledge about, they were dropped right down in the middle of it and learned from it. It made them have a better understanding.
