Buck 110, Survival Knives, and Why I like Buck Knives 

I can afford any knife I want, but I still carry a Buck 112 as my edc for the last 31 years, I've been carrying a custom shop version, with elk horn handle and s30v for the last 2 years, and I love it,

I personally think that a survival knife is whatever knife you happen to have with you at the time. Is the Buck 110 a survival knife? Sure! Absolutely!

Imagine this, I don't own a 110 but I have given them as gifts. I need to adjust my priorities.

When i was growing up here in western canada , almost every pick up truck in the country had either a .22 or 30-30 behind the seat and a BUCK 110 in the glove box. It was the go to for hunting , fishing, camping. Field dressing your deer or opening up your pack of hotdogs .

Bought my Buck 110 back in 1988 when I was serving in the Norwegian UN forces in Lebanon. It is a 25 year anniversary model. (I was 22 at the time). Little did I know what an icon this model is. I had one of these way back in my Boy Scout days. It was great, but I ended up moving around a lot with the Navy and at some point I realized I didn't have it anymore. I finally replaced it a few months ago with a 110 in brass, ironwood, and S30V from the custom shop. More expensive, but I have no regrets.

I was a pup when a *Buck Knife* was at its zenith. The Buck Knife was an appellation that included not only the 110 but also its many copies. Having one on your belt was as much a fashion statement as it was practical. At that impressionable age I was easily swayed by the outdoor magazines and readily bought into whatever their advertisers prompted them to promote, even when it ran contrary to what I'd see with my own eyes. To my embarrassment, that lasted for too many decades. Dozens of drop pointed, anything but hollow ground, lightweight, one handed opening, pocket clipped ... knives made their way into my collection and pockets, most of which were very good knives. My voluntary ignorance was revealed to me when once again a Buck 110 found its way into my hand. It completed the task with aplomb and I was reminded of the brilliance and functionality of the design. It has not been absent from my regular EDC rotation since. Glad to see it appreciated and enjoyed by younger generations. I suspect it will continue to find its way onto the belts and into the pockets of Backwoodsmen long into the future.

I'll have to add my two cents. I started collecting folding knives and fixed blades around 2004. I first bought some crappy Smith & Wesson 'Ops' knives with "440 surgical stainless!" Man was I uninformed back then. I then started getting and collecting all these super duper steel knives like Benchmade, Gerber, Spyderco, Cold Steel, et.al. At some point I bought a 2005 Idaho stamp Buck 110 and threw it in a backpack and forgot about it. I thought "it's only a good blade if it has super duper steel!" I found that 2005 Buck 110 in that backpack a couple years ago and now all those super steel knives collect dust in a box and I went back to the good 'ole 110. These 110's are so addictive at collecting and I scored some 1980-81 3 dot Buck 110's with the squared bolsters and better 440C steel which was the last year for that. Buck then switched to 425M steel from '81-'92 and then 420HC from '92 to present. All, I believe, have the exceptional Paul Bos heat treat. Ease of sharpening is another reason as I don't want to sit through a sharpening session in camp with some super steel when these 110's hone very easily. But the big difference is the bolsters. The 1980-81 3 dot is built like a tank comparably and is what the Buck 110 should look like. It's the masculine version with the heavier squared bolsters. The newer versions with the rounded bolsters look feminine to me and the '80-'81 3 dot puts my newer 110's to shame! In addition I've noticed that the brass smell on the 3 dot is almost non-existent whereas the newer 110's smell pretty bad. I wonder if they used a different composition back then? I also scored a lightweight aluminum bolstered drop point 110 in 420HC with pocket clip from Copper and Clad and that is a nice knife as well. But I'll be carrying that 1980-81 3 dot from now on camping, backpacking and hunting in the high mountains here. I'll probably score some more 3 dot 110's to give to my kids when they get old enough (the Buck 110 was the first blade I held back around '84 when I was really young.) Try to score some 2 dot or 3 dot 110's to compare against and you won't regret it. Good review. Cheers from Idaho, home of Buck Knives.

Nice job my friend. I've been in the stock room to the forest hiking and camping to hunting and fishing world. Used many knives through the years. Some were amazing and others had inherent flaws. Buck is one of those knife companies along with Esee that really perform. Buck by far has the best edge I've worked with. Truly supports an amazing fine edge. In addition, like you it's hard to go away from a company that put their company in the hands of the Lord. God bless my friend.

Nice vid and I started with wanting a Buck 110 in the 80's but could not afford one....I prefer now the Buck 112 and I own a few and will always have a place in my heart and they are good knives....Good stuff....

The Buck 110 is a survival knife if it is the only knife you have when that situation arises.

If your'e a reasonable person you realy don't need anything else, i love my 110.

Buck does make good knives and i always liked them. They were "Survival Knives" before the term was cool. Yes they are better Knives out there but if you use the Knife like it was designed to do they are fine. i liked them even more after i read the card one day i have no problem spending my money with an American company that is not afraid to speak up about Jesus

I’m 53 years old and I would say the buck 110 has been in more woods and impromptu 24/48 hour survival situations than any modern knife on the planet.my grandfather’s and uncles wore them at many a deer camp.including myself ,in the late 80s I was out hunting small game and it got dark,I had to build a fire and debris shelter using the buck 110 because it was getting to dark to find my way back.next morning I got my way back to the deer camp.

👍 I love my Buck 110s. And, yes, I have more than one. Amazingly, at yard sales and flea markets you can find some good deals. If you understand what are knife tasks there isn’t much a Buck 110 cannot do. Nice video, thank you for sharing.

I have a few large pocket knives. The 110 is built like a tank in comparison. I love that warranty card too! When I saw one in the box of a more tactical Buck someone gave my hubby, I went to Buck's website and got me the classic 110. That's a company I'll gladly give my money to.

When i was a boyscout back in the late 80s. The knife everyone carried was a buck 110. I was lefthanded so sheath knifes never came in my preference. It wasn't easy to find a lefthanded sheath. Anyway back in those days bushcraft was wilderness survival. Even in the army i carried a buck 110 ranger. Ive not came across anything needed in survival you couldn't do with a 110. That knife probably skinned more deer then any other brand. I know ive cleaned tons of fish with one. Really like the newer models with pocket clips.

You know I didn't know very much about knives. Always went with whatever was cheapest and I've lost quite a few knives that way there either misplacing them or breaking them in some cases because they were cheaply made knives not because I'm particularly abusive with my equipment. I treated knives like they were temporary. I started thinking about it and my dad the same two or three knives with him for a long time. One of them was the Leatherman in one of them was a buck. It's honestly this rabbit hole that I went down that I wanted to get a buck and I love it so far. It's just an American knife.

So many people want pocket knives to weigh less than a Pixie's fart, but I have two Buck 110's and I know when I put them in my pocket I can feel them there, there's no worry of them falling out and I don't notice.

When I think survival knife, I think of something that can handle it all in a situation like camping in the woods for a week miles away from civilization. Personally, I don't think just having one knife and it being the buck 110 could live up to that. I love my 110s but I would carry a second knife that I know could handle it all. There are other knives even from buck that would be much better for certain tasks. You definitely can't chop or baton with a 110. You would take a huge chance of breaking it if you did.

I’m picking up the 110 sport on pay day because there are no videos on it that I have seen. I’m also going to get a custom 110 and probably a normal one. It's one of the best hunting folder from days gone by ,like over 50 years now and I got several models, because I like Bucks quality and heat treatment on their steel 420hc , and I yes I agree we as knife owner should all have one. That one or a 119 and 120 general, but all three would make good survival knives. Made in the USA. The Chinese Bucks are so so and don't have the forever warranty I don't think 🤔

I have question for everybody..What knife would you pick up If you were abruptly woken up and have only 30 seconds to leave??? I myself don't have an answer to that but I always have folder and fixed blade in my vehicle... And No I don't own Buck 110 as of yet,I have different knives that are more than adequate...

Great video - I started out with some Benchmades and Spydercos and landed firmly in the Chris Reeve camp (I have more than a dozen) and 3 Hinderers. I carry my Large Inkosi every day and decided I wanted a secondary small knife so I bought some Swiss Army (first knife my dad gave me) and then bought some Case knives and I rotate out my secondary with my Inkosi as my every day. I then bought a 110 and I have no idea what happened but I just fell in love with it! Now I have bunches of them from standards too Pros to a 59th Anniversary to several DLT exclusives and finally I bought a few customs made from the website! Now I carry my Inkosi AND a 110 and a small traditional - a bit much I know but it’s my EDC and that’s that! The 110 in my opinion is the best knife made for all the reasons you mentioned!

I got started with a buck 110 in January 1972 when I was in the Navy I had a nice Old Timer that I had all through High School and some turd stole it from me so I bought a buck 110 from the ship store awesome knife back then they were made in Southern California mine is before they stamped the 110 on the blade that knife has traveled around the world with me not failing me even once I still have it today other than a lot of sharpening there is no sign of wear on it at all I started trying to get one each time they made a change but I missed a few I now have 8 110s including a new s30v with micarta handle. from old to new they have always been built very very well I love them

I love the Buck 110 knife. A few years ago I got one for me and one for my daughter. She calls it her Longmire knife. It was just like the one Walt Longmire used in his show.

Isaac The Buck 110 has followed me on a lot of working days and through quite a few adventures. As a working knife I use min e with care and they atr more than tough enough for daily use. In a “survival” situation it’s likely what I’d have as my “gear” may not be with me and as I’ve never had one break I’d say that the real test is not how strong of a knife can you buy but how well can one use one as a tool for it’s intended purpose. In its many versions (including the 112 if blade length is an issue where you are) they are awesome. They can be found for, as you said, a reasonable price new and I found one used at a garage sale for $ 7. In a belt pouch or a deep coat pocket the weight is not too bad, on the traditional styles. I just bought a NOS 110 dated 1989 with camo nylon sheath.

Buck knife company makes a good product. I own many of their knifes and even their cheaper knifes are good knifes for no more than you pay for them.
