The Buck 119 is one of the more classic fixed blades you can buy. Invented by Hoyt Buck in the 1900s or something, this knife's design has stood the test of time. In this review I muse on terrible ways to improve the design, talk about Tom Brown and the TOPS tracker for some reason, and baton. I always baton. Is batoning a knife even worth doing any more? Who cares. Support my channel by, buying the knife through the links below.

As someone who has legitimately shot an 8 point buck in the heavy rain I had absolutely no problem field dressing it with this very knife while still pouring rain. So while the handle is indeed slick it didn't impare my ability to use the knife while also not piercing the guts. The only reason I carry the knife is my grandpa got it for me for Christmas after I killed my first deer, and it'd hurt his feelings if I didn't carry it.

Since the knife is intended to be used for hunting they probably used that material so you could easily wash off blood. Lynn Thompson should consider that too so I don't always have to buy a new knife once it is drenched in the blood of my enemies.

That's because of the shiney handle. The aluminium. A leprechaun would have liked it for sure. Shiney shiney ! Watching the Joe X video on the Buck 120. It was quite tough. and it went through the car better than most knives. That has to be said.

I’ve still got my first one I got for Christmas from my dad back in the early 80’s. The 119 isn’t the best at any one thing, it’s meant to be Well balanced enough for about anything, durable, and multipurpose in hunting and camping. I’ve collected hundreds of knives, swords, axes, and just about everything with a blade, and most traditional designs as well as new ones through half a century. The buck isn’t my go-to, but the best first camping/hunting knife around. I myself carry several knives in the woods, and several EDC’s. Now, there is no perfect knife, design, or material for everything, but to hit on something very multipurpose, simple in design, that remains popular throughout time is quite a feat indeed. Most modern designs can’t, and won’t accomplish that.

Buck 119 is a great hunting knife, it really shines with small/medium game. It’s small enough to skin and maneuver, but large enough to do some field processing. The handle while appearing slick never slipped on me and is easily cleaned.

I've used this knife for 23 years for hunting. It's one of 2. I use a smaller knife, the 119 is strong and usually used for rough stuff and my smaller knife is for most things . I hammer rabbits to the back of the skull with the flat side of the thick blade to dispatch them with the 119. Crap handle but I've never slipped.

119 wasn't designed to be a hunting knife.. it was built as a direct competitor of the kabar .. it was built to be a battle blade

The 120 is the one with the fighting knife blade length. The 120 competes with the Kabar fighting knife. The 119 is shorter and not, technically, a fighting knife.
@Ve-suvius
@Ve-suvius 2 месяца назад
@@totallyfrozen When Col. Applegate and Mr. Fairbairn got together to design the replacement for the Sykes-Fairbairn commando, they decided to talk to a real expert. They found a resistance member in Norway who's speciality was taking out sentries. He had killed something like 100 Germans with a knife. He said the blade needed to be 6" long to insure penetration to the organs, from any angle. Shorter wouldn't do, and longer was wasted blade. The Applegate-Fairbairn has a 6 1/4" blade, and the excellent "coke bottle" handle. Had the war lasted into 1946, this would have replaced the Sykes-Fairbairn.

I love the Buck 119 knife and have just ordered and received one from the factory last month from Buck since the first one I purchased was given away to my grandfather decades ago after he saw and loved it. After giving away my first 119 I tried buying another one at the military exchange, but they didn't have one in stock so I purchased the 120 which I still have and is a great knife also and have had it for about 38 years or more.

I had to buy another one because I ended up giving my dad the 75th-anniversary edition 119 and I wish I could've given him a plain 119 because now the 75th versions are going up in value because of the damn shield on the handle! But it is a great knife indeed. Phenolic is an indestructible polymer, in fact, pool balls are made from phenolic and just like the handle of the buck 119, they are both indestructible. I'm glad I bought another one. These knives make a great gift as well to someone just starting out in bushcraft or as a knife collecting hobby, so let's give our family members and friends this time-honored classic and thus, carry on in this wonderful tradition of Buck being our first knife!

Lost my 120 General, so I got two of these little suckers. They take a very fine edge, and sharpened the clip edges, they will tear up anything that comes into contact with it.The swooping bottom edge will cut thru meat, hide or pretty much anything and it's a handy hunting knife and does stuff a 10"+ Trailmaster or Natchez can't.. lightweight, easy to carry, and goes unnoticed by most people. The sheath sucks but I tend to make my own anyway. Thanks for the posts!

At your request, suggestions to changes (or, options) for the Buck 119: Add a drop point blade option. Loose the portion of the guard above the handle. 20+ plus years ago Chris Reeve (who knows a few things about knife design) explained why saw backs are a silly waste of time. Perhaps consider a convex grind. I have XL glove sized hands so a 4-1/2” long handle would be appreciated. My Buck 119 has an Ironwood handle and a D2 steel blade with Bos heat treat, no issues there. Blade length and thickness are just fine, big thick sharpened pry bars are also a silly waste of time. Buck 110 is best knife ever made. I have 11 in various steels, blade shapes, and scale materials.

Not sure if you were joking about the "blood groove" but thats not what that is, Its known as a "fuller" and is typically used to manipulate the weight distribution on the blade. By removing mass from the middle while leaving mass on the upper 3rd of the blade moves the balance further out for better chopping and slashing while the mass removed also serves to lighten the blade for more agility overall in fighting situations. It has nothing to do with blood or suction or pressure, thats an old myth I used to believe too until I started learning more about making knives. Fullers can also make the blade more eye catching and many have done them in artistic ways with patterns and symbols. A favorite one Ive seen is with it shaped and etched to look like a feather. Im not sure if you were being tongue in cheek or serious(Aspergers syndrome), you may already know all this or have learned this over the past 4 years since you posted this, If so I apologize I just discovered your channel while looking for info on the D2 Ka-bar.

At first i did not like the review but quickly understood the comedy in your review and thought you did a great job reviewing this classic... Loved watching you mutilated that green pepper.

Buck sells knives that are over 100 dollars ;the 119 is not one of them.It is a good hunting/survival knife which is what I use it for.I have never batoned with a knife;thats what hatchets and axes are for.

You know I’m not quite serious when I baton with fixed blades right. It’s a running channel joke- most people get it.

The 119 is a great knife. Can't really carry a fixed blade as an EDC where I live, so the folding knife is helpful. Just found your channel, subscribed, looking forward to learning more!

i see you have some fun with batoning that wood, i like it. I just ordered this knife today, i an not planing on using it for hunting as i do not hunt but rather as a multi purpose knife, i would use it against people or creatures in an emergency like being attacked or something, but i would prefer a non violent/deadly outcome (sorry for my rambling)

A classic knife from Buck, it is a hunter knife not a bushcraft knife, it is not for battoning. The 420 steel is stunning in this knife, Buck can use like it was a steel from a much better grade. Regards!.

Buck being a real classic, i often wonder about the slick handle. Maybe so with extended handling of the thing it will never actually cause abrasion to your hands. Think about how blood gets sticky after a while, maybe the intended grip glue is actually blood.

Maybe... I don't have one yet. It's a stupid looking knife, however I sure as shit ain't paying $215 for the full size, when it's basically a Chniese Fantasy looking uhh... piece. That said- that doesn;t mean I can't appreciate it in other ways!

It's borderline too much in all regards, which is why I like it. I want to inspire that "not quite sure if mall ninja, Rambo larper or not" kinda thought in others if I'm camping. They'll never know if I'm cosplaying or not, and it shall vex them.

Huh. Looks a little undersized compared to my vintage Buck 120 General (that’s not a knoife...).

Lol. I cod say the same thing when comparing your 120 to my 18" custom Bowie. I have used that thing exactly once. To slice a bottle in half on one of my stupid videos.

I've found an easy hack for the slippery handle; super-gluing my hand to the knife.

I do have a lot of knives. That 119, she’s a classic. Nice review. So did you say you’ll do a review of the 120 and 110? Just Joking. Another good classic video.

When I was 19 I had a nasty accident with this knife. Very sharp knife. It was also used in the movie Scream. Good to see your pronunciation skill become more mericanized. Btw, 6” isn’t a big knife, it’s a mid sized knife. But anything above 6” is.

Who’s the judge of knife sizes. Guys who own several large fixed blades or the rest of the world? Imagine a knife block in a house, and 10 or so of these in it.

I like it. Love the design. I would go for a 120mm blade and a wooden handle instead of that pffhnn-holic stuff.

The 119 is a great knife FOR THE PRICE, and definately a classic. Go up in cost even a little bit and you can find many much better knives. If your grampa, and your Dad both carried a 119 it's a nice nostalgic visit.

Okay, my experience with this knife goes back to the eighties. Cleaned and quartered around a hundred deer. Bloody, wet, and on my fourth beer. I used that knife in the military and ranch work. I have slit a buck pelvis many times. The knife is ready to go this year. Being my uncle gave it to me used it is a tool I treasure and it has never let me down.

Nice knife review. I've noticed as I get older, I get more slick and bulbous. Not a feature I want in a knife.
