I bought this levers and replaced my 401 levers on basic budget 4 calipers MT420 brakes. Such a cheap upgrade and what a big difference! They works GREAT!! And I learned how to bleed my brakes also as a bonus. Those have a servowave mechanism, which makes them more bity (sensitive to module) but I am having same brake power with much less energy given from my fingers = less deathgrip! Great video! Thank you.

For anyone who thinks upgrading to M8100 will reduce free stroke compered to M6100/M7100, it will not. The free stroke screw works but other way around. Free stroke of M6100/M7100 lever is the same as M8100 with screwed all the way in free stroke screw. So compared to M6100/M7100 free stroke could be make longer with M8100 screw, not shorter. I have tested this with the same caliper (m520). Also the M7100 lever with replaced screw(Y-8VC98070) from M8100 works exactly the same as M8100. If anyone is interested I have measured the free stroke at the end of the lever BL-M8100 + BR-M520: free stroke = 17,5 to 25mm BL-M7100 with free stroke screw from 8100 + BR-M520: free stroke = 17,5 to 25mm BL-M7100 + BR-M520: free stroke = 17,5mm BL-M6100 + BR-M520: free stroke = 17,5mm BL-M8100 + MT7 Pro caliper: free stroke = 9,5 to 13,5mm BL-M6100 + MT7 Pro caliper: free stroke = 9,5mm BL-M8100 + MT5 caliper: free stroke = 13 to 19,5mm BL-M8100 + MT5 caliper with MT7 pads: free stroke = 13 to 19,5mm Magura MT5 stock: free stroke: 29mm Cheers!
@MichalSzul
@MichalSzul 2 года назад
@@LoveMTB Love it! It is way more powerful and stiffer feel in lever. Similar to Formula brakes if I have to compare. Also the best part is short free stroke but because of that it is not for everyone as disc has to be perfectly straight and caliper perfectly aligned as there is almost no gap between disc and pads with free stroke screw all the way in. Also do not like magura bleeding as it is messy during removal of bleeding nipple and replacing it with screw. The most annoying part of the full shimano for me was huge free stroke which could be hacked by pushing out pistons but that procedure has to be repeated as pads wear out. I wonder if MT5 caliper would behave the same as MT7 but for the moment I do not have any to check and I am not going to buy it just for curiosity, at least for now ;)

I mounted the new BL-6100 on my old BR-M447 Caliper. I am happy with Servo Wave now. Better brake power and pressure point as the same as SLX 7000. I changed the old 59 hose to the new 90 hose. Good upgrade for my old brake. Very cheap. But best performance. Brake pads are not the typical Shimano B01S. I uses Quaxar P20.10 Semi Metallic. Discs are SM RT64M. Have fun with your new DEORE M6100 brakes! And thanks for video. In Germany we haven't such a fine channel for bike parts reviews.

My M6000 were great for 6 months or so then I started getting trouble with sticky caliper pistons (though they were a bit dodgy from the start). Something went wrong with the rear lever master cylinder too unfortunately. Shame because performance wise they were brilliant and great value for money. Went for the M7100 and they've been perfect so far. Hoping they last longer.

Sup! Hey MTBR had a review of the 6100 2 piston brakes and they gave them a 10/10 and said they are shimano's best brake regardless of price. I'm still having inconsistent lever feel (WBP) with my 8100 2 piston XTs. Have you any opinion on the lever consistency/feel of the 6100s compared to either 8100 or 8000s? Night and day or have you not experienced the wandering bite point with 8100s? Thanks!!

Hey, What do you think about br m6100 vs br m7000? Deore comes with new i spec EV, no ceramic pistons and I would opt for version with ice pads. Slx br m7000 is around 60 dollars more and they come with ceramic pistons, there is also tool free reach adjustment. I would want something that can work as long as it can with regular maintenance. Are this ceramic pistons better in terms of longevity, I've seen people break them by not being careful during maintenance. Since I intend to use these brakes for at least 2-3 years , are ceramic pistons going to last that long? What do you think? Thanks

Great review. Small overview. All brake handles are serviceable these days. All have the same braking power. XT 8100 lever position knob + freestroke adjust with philips head (replace screw with inner allen head) SLX 7100 lever position knob + freestroke adjust with special security bit (replace screw with inner allen head) Deore 6100 lever position allan key, no freestroke adjust XTR xc version = Deore 6100 in spec. My advise: Deore for XC More breaking power: Deore 4 piston I have all different version on xc / trail bikes and notice no difference in braking performance. Note: My brakes do not get very hot. I bought the XT because I never had XT, but I have to truly conclude that it adds no value, well ok I do feel cool that my bike has XT 😉

@@LoveMTB cus the free stroke adjust the bite point, the bite point is needed for short reach, for smaller hands, at least that's how it should work. I have MT200/201 brakes that shipped with my Occam H30 (resin). Would the 6100 2-piston levers/calipers be a significant upgrade when using sintered pads? I'm a light rider, the MT200 aren't terrible but I'd be worried using them on longer decents.
@Impenneteri
@Impenneteri 2 года назад
I used MT200 brakes before. Resin pads during prolonged braking on long descents will cause a brake fade. I've experienced it before and boy I thought that was it for me. Good thing I saw a huge pile of sand (road construction) just outside the curve in the road and I press the brake real hard while the sand naturally force my bike to stop moving. Switched to M6100 with J04C metal pads and MT800 rotor, I'm now more confident that my brake won't fade in long descents. The instant bite of sintered pads also gives you that confidence as compared to a modulated braking power of resin pads. Sintered/metal pads gets noisy though when it gets wet

I found this online whilst looking at compatibility makes it a bit easier to understand the naming: Maybe someone will find this helpful - Quick Shimano Brake pads code guide J04C First letter will stand for pad shape type (obviously you will need to check for specific pad letter to match your caliper). Basically most popular for nowadays will be: G, F, J (Deore-XTR) - narrow pad shape B (Acera-Altus) - wide pad shape (you can not use these with narrow/2piece rotors) D, H (Saint-Zee) - narrow pad shape K, L (for Road 140mm rotors) - narrow pad shape A, E, M (older calipers) - vary from model Two numbers will define pad compound 01-02 - Resin (except D02S which is Metallic, maybe some other older marking as well like E01S) 03-04 - Metallic 05-08 - vary from model (older calipers) Last letter will define backplate material A - Aluminum C - Combined (Aluminum fins, Steel pad backplate) S - Steel Ti - Titanium Pads with fin versions (Ice Tech) differs in fin displacement 1st version F 2nd version H, J, L (different fin orientation and inside/outside fins)

Are you SURE it's it is pre-installed in the lever? If so, then you'd have to first remove them from the lever and mount them on your newly cut hose prior to re-inserting the hose to the lever. Is that right? Thank you!

@@LoveMTB Well I scoured the descriptions of both this video and the one you referred and did not find any info on this. I surely respect your experience and knowledge here, but it's just not clear from what I've seen; correct me if I'm wrong. I did see that the hose was inserted at least an inch into the lever, so I will watch for that when I do my upgrade to make sure there's no other olive/insert in the lever housing blocking full insertion. @sprousaTM
@sprousaTM 3 года назад
The mt520 caliper and 2 finger mt501 brake lever combination is by far the best deal in the Shimano lineup.. It is cheap and has the same brake power as higher 4 piston brakes like the xt... I use a slx m7120 brake set front and rear on a self built trail fully and the mt520 on my hardtail.. I cannot notice any difference between both of them if paired with the same rotors. There are a lot of ppl who sell their unused mt520 or 420 brakesets of their newly bought bike to replace them by xt or even xtr. I bought an unused mt520 set for 85 bucks, which is hilarious. The mt420 is supposed to be 10% weaker than the mt520. The biggest difference is the huge brake lever, but you can easily match a mt420 or 520 caliper with slx or xt levers, which I highly recommend. Same goes for the drive train. Go for slx cassette, slx derailleur but xt shifter and you get the same performance as xt with slightly more weight but with the xt shifter the double up shift, which slx and deore can't do.

@sprousaTM
@sprousaTM 3 года назад
@@HOllyBOni Basically this! And concerning I-Spec EV. I use it with the 7120 Brakeset left and right. Right I switch to a XT Shifter and left the Mt500 Dropper Level. Dropper lever works awesome regarding positioning. The XT Shifter though works but thats about it. The positioning of the shifter does not work as good as with the normal clamp. It is either in the way of my thumb or too far back. If you put it all the way to the left and forward, I can easily reach every lever but the thumb touches it when not shifting.. Too far back and I can not push the lever that is farther back behind, only pull it... Cockpit though looks really clean.

I'm trying to figure out if these newer type I-Spec clamps + levers will be compatible with older shifters, but that is not shown on the diagram I found from Shimano. I got some older SL-M660 Rapidfire shifters that I need to know will work with an M6100 brake setup with those clamps. If it doesn't work, this whole thing will quickly become a lot more expensive because then I might as well change complete drivetrain + crankset too, and then I might as well just change the whole bike instead. Anyhow, does anyone know if it will work since my shifters have their own separate clamp. It can be removed, but I still need to know if the shifter then can be attached to the newer I-Spec clamps. I have no idea if the master cylinder of the newer brakes will interfere with the old shifter clamp or the shifter itself, so... EDIT: After a bit of searching I found out that M670 is the first generation of the 4 versions of I-Spec(A, B, II and EV), which is when 10 speed was introduced. I got a 9 speed setup, so of course no I-Spec. Still, I would like to know if it still is possible either directly or via a hack or something. Since I need to do a complete brake setup swap on this bike I would like to get something I know I can service throughout its lifespan. I've had too many unwanted issues already with this 9-speed bullshit that the industry is phasing out so an upgrade makes little sense or often times even impossible. It's pretty sad that just because my brakes are shot, that I might need to order new shifters as well, and then I need to upgrade my full drivetrain to 10 speed, even full crank setup etc. Just because of the brakes... I'll be damned.

@@LoveMTB They are just old and worn out Avid Juicy 5 from 2013 that have done their job and then some. I ride everyday all year around(commuter bike) so they have gotten some miles to say the least. My last fix was new pistons and bushings which lasted about 9 months, but now they have just given up. One piston is just super slow and cannot be manipulated to anything acceptable, and well there's other things as well. I just don't want to touch them anymore and consider the whole setup as junk now. Would be nice to jump over to some Shimano brakes, but as I need something that'll work with my shifters, I might be stuck with som Avid of sorts once more. I just wish I could get a proper upgrade once I had to upgrade it anyhow, but we'll see once I find some brakes with clamps that'll do the job.

@@LoveMTB Here is the parts diagram for my Shimano SLX SL-M660 shifters imgur.com/DLcmVhc - As you see, and as I stated above, they have their separate clamp. My main concern is with the newer M6100, M7100 etc brakes that have 2 engagement points to the handlebar, versus the M6000, M7000 etc. that only have one engangement point which is the previous I-Spec clamp. That may cause there to be an issue with the distance between the lever and the shifter. The other thing is that the clamp itself is mounted further in on the master cylinder, which then will push the lever further out towards the edge of the handlebar, if both should be mounted next to a shifter clamp. If my shifter clamp somehow can fit between the clamp of the master cylinder and the 2nd engagement point, that might work, but this is all just theories so far. This is why I have been thinking that getting my hands on a set of M6000 or M7000 might be something that would work better, but I still would like the newest option if it will work. EDIT: If you pause the video at 4:25 you actually see that your silver shifter clamp looks like the one I got on my bike, so if that works with M6000/M7000 brakes then it should be fine with my shifters as well.
@Perception_
@Perception_ 2 года назад
I have now checked physically and it actually works with the newest gen brakes(M6100/M7100/M8100). My shifter clamp needs to be on the outside(closest to the handlebar end) of the brake clamp and it is actually more than enough room. I was rather skeptical when I looked at photographs, because the clamps look so much beefier than they actually are in real life. I had to remove the shifter indicators, but that was super easy and Shimano had even mounted spare block off plates on the inside so the back of the shifters aren't open to the elements. Only one of my local shops had the newer gen brakes in stock, or else I would be boned to say the least. Easier explanation: The clamps need to be mounted next to each other so that the shifter will go under the brake clamp, and the brake will go over the shifter clamp. This is the opposite of the norm, which is why I had to get a physical confirmation before I was willing to order anything. EDIT: And now I even found confirmation from Shimano themself that it should work as well. This just gets better and better imgur.com/a/POHvPnY
