@@vr4042 Have altus on my Vitus Nucleus hardtail. It shifts great but kinda slow, and after few hours of riding when the chain is gunked up the shifting gets really crappy, double shifts, not shifting at all, having to shift 2 times for 1 gear change etc. and the shifters are just rubbish. both shifters don't show what gear im in anymore and front derailleur shifter got completely destroyed from a small crash. Tbf its an entry groupset on a 650€ bike and I suspect it would work fine for a beginner. The lack of a clutch really sucks also, didn't realize how easy the chain comes of on rougher terrain. XT shifter is a common upgrade on SLX, and likely will be with this new 12 speed Deore. Mostly for both the double upshift and just better feel/durability. Deore or SLX with XT shifter is a great combo.

I'll add that holding the Deore and slx derailleurs side by side the only notable difference is the alloy inner jockey cage on the slx. The all steel cage on the Deore feels sturdier for a slight weight penalty.

This is the reason I like Shimano: you have a lot of options and they are cross compatible. It's hard to get a bike with all the components as you would like them, once they wear out you might one to change a few things without throwing away everything. 10-51 is a great range for a 1x12 system. Personally I usually take SLX as my starting point and I can move up or down depending on what I need in that particular setup I'm working on.

I just ordered a 2021 Grand Canyon 8, it comes with an interesting mixed bag of XT/SLX/Deore components: XT derailleur, SLX shifters and chain, and Deore cassette and crank. I sure would've loved the last two to be also SLX, but I'm pretty sure it's a decent groupset combo for the price of the bike. SLX with XT shifter was the sweet spot in the lineup, Deore with XT shifter might take that title now. Just need more microspline hubs out there, or better yet, conversion kits for existing hubs. Cost is also a big advantage over SRAM. Full XT costs around the same as GX Eagle, even though it is comparable to XO1. SLX costs slightly less than NX Eagle but is comparable to GX eagle. The new Deore costs slightly less than SX eagle, but blows NX eagle out of the water.

I'd go for the Deore and may consider an upgrade if I wear a part out or if something breaks - probably the shifter being top priority since it comes with a little fewer features. I have been traditionally a "blue collar" XT guy. In Jan 2020, I bought a FELT SUTPLUS-30 and almost immediately upgraded the 1x10 Deore drivetrain to the 1x12 XT (11-50), as well upgrading the Deore 2-piston brakes to the m8120 4-piston XT brakes. I know that I feel the difference in both the shifting of the drivetrain (especially to lower gears going into a climb), as well as the shifter itself, and a huge difference in brakes. I have a 2015 INTENSE 27.5 with full XT. I upgraded to 1x11 XT with the 11-50 gearing and upgraded the brakes with ice-tech rotors and metalic pads. Having said that. If I bought a 2020 bike or were looking to upgrade a Deore groupset bike. After watching this video, I would seriously look into SLX.

Meanwhile most brands spec an expensive rear mech with a cheap shifter even though the other way round would result in better performance for less money. The way I see it it’s a case of allocation. Unless l’d have an unlimited budget I would invest in an XT shifter with the money saved by going for a Deore mech and Sunrace cassette plus KMC chain. Cranks would be SLX (hollowtech) which would save money that would invested in a set of DT wheels.

Every review I've seen on new Deore misses two real points, because they focus only on the 12 speed and imply that it's only for bikes that have 142+ rear axle. The biggest great thing comes in two places I think: The first being that they now offer a rear microspline hub that fits 135mmQR dropouts, ie, all beginner frames, and the 11 speed 11-51 cassette fits on a normal HG spline hub - which means it can go on pretty much any bike, without having to get a new hub or wheelset. So replace a hub on a super cheap entry level bike and you can get 10-51 12 speed at reasonable price. Upgrade just the cassette to the 11 speed 11-51 and that's a huge range increase from most entry level bikes that may have say, 11-36. So really, it's two things - reasonable price, and compatibility to upgrade for literally anyone. I also really like the i-spec EV shifter that includes the gear readout. I know most people don't care about it but I like to be able to see and confirm which gear I'm in, and the I-spec cleaning up the cockpit (presuming compatible brakes) is awesome.

I want to point out, lighter generally makes LESS durable. The chain rings will eat into the free hub and become impossible to replace. They also wear faster. IF you're building yourself and not buying a complete bike off the shelf it's really a choice between XTR and XT. The price difference is vast but the performance and weight are minimal. I don't bash my bikes around so I stick to XTR (apart from once and never again trying Sram). Sentimentally I get attached to my bikes so I hardly ever sell them. I'm a firm believer in the N+1 rule. That's indeed laughable - the only real reason to worry about the mass is that it's unsprung and therefore prevents the suspension from tracking the ground quite as smoothly. However, the full quote was “stiffer and lighter”, so the “less inertia” may actually refer to it twisting less before starting to fully transmit power. And though that too doesn't much improve acceleration as such, it does improve _response_ of acceleration - which is actually quite important for technical climbs and trialsy maneuvers.

They are not talking about the inertia of the bike but the rotational inertia of the cassette - ie. how hard it is to stop and start the cassette rotating. A lighter cassette will require less energy to spin up and will stop rotating faster putting less force on the chain in the process.
@aleksarajkovic3471

@Jolinator

@@aleksarajkovic3471 Yes you are correct but shimano dont make the wheel or tire combo only the drivetrain so whilst they have more effect they are irrelevant to shimano and its engineering or marketing terms. They can only speak on the drivetrain not tires which they dont make. When you stop pedaling and coast your wheel is still spinning your cassette is not spinning the reference was to the inertia of the cassette stopping and starting. At this stage of drivetrains with even entry level now getting 1x12 any increments we see from here are going to be somewhat marginal at best the derailleur based drivetrain has reached full maturity many moons ago.

The 10 and 11 speed versions do, the 11 speed offers an 11-51 range on the cassette. Having Deore 12 speed on microspline also pushes more companies to build microspline hubs or conversion kits for existing hubs as the Deore groupset is going to be very common on your more entry level bikes which sell a lot more than 10 grand carbon race bikes.

What's the takeaway here: _"yea, more/less chain slap makes it (not so) quiet due to (lack of) clutch performance"_ What's next? Brake reviews going uphill?! _("brakepads ain't rattling in the calipers and they're SO light, i barely noticed'em")_ 😆 @Spencer: Depends what you go for - lever feel changes drastically as you go up the tiers. Heya guys! I stopped mountainbiking in the mid 90s, when we had XTR, XT, LX, STX-RC, STX...and as Doddy mentioned in the retro week last year, we all craved XT and had mostly LX on our bikes. So is SLX now the equivalent of the good old LX and Deore the heir of STX? When did they change the names? So confusing...
@Chronostra

I think that is true. But they are not just change the name, some of the groupset is dropped entirely, for example LX. CMIIW tho. The hierarchy today is XTR, XT, SLX, Deore, Alivio, Acera, Altus. But, some people said that the last three (Alivio, Acera Altus) is not a true MTB groupset. I ride 2x9 Alivio Acera mix and it felt fine and dirt cheap. Each for everyone, I guess?

I run di2 Ultegra on my road bikes and am a bit of a groupset snob really. Then I bought an MTB to do some XC races for some cross training and a bit of fun. I was only looking for a mid-level bike so settled for Deore with some apprehension - but holy shit, this bad boy is bomb-proof. It doesn’t matter what you throw at it, it just goes and goes and goes with only the minimum of maintenance and I often outlast my opponents on better bikes that suffer mechanical issues. Sometimes simple-done-well is the answer.

I treated myself and went with full xt on my new Ripley. Before this I had a trek 26” hardtail with full deore from 2013. Deore, even from that time has worked exceptionally well. I’ll bet the new deore is even better. Personally, like depth of pockets, I think it also depends on how addicted you are to mtb. Does the weight of components really matter when you’re talking a few grams here or there? To me it’s not really an issue, like I’m not going to notice if a shifter is slightly heavy than another. The weight of the average rider fluctuates more in a day than the difference between a light drivetrain and a slightly heavier one so to me it doesn’t make sense to get too caught up in weight saving

So to sum up the video: basically the difference between deore/slx/xt is weight + the xt shifter has 2-way up-shifts (shifts to smallet sprockets). So if you don’t care about few hundret grams, just get deore + xt shifter. What about the rear-mech upper chainwheel? On the older sets, xt (or xtr?) used to have bearings wich made it more precise on shifts.

How on earth does that video actually intend to make anyone validate such a purchase when the product hasn't even been tested over a year .. So you conclusion after a couple of hours ??? Why should weight come into it ..when you should be highlighting the material used ....because you are more likely to endure poor quality of parts made in China . How many hours will those parts last before needing to be changed ???????????????? Will they last 2 years plus ... I've already had to replace the cassette and crank twice already on my bike and the chain 3 times .. still have to get another new fucking cassette and crank again ...come pay day ..
