I live in Chicago so ya need home defense. I put a ProMag Tactical stock on my Savage 64 but I took off the Butt Stock and now It looks like a long hand gun with a RED DOT sight. Not the best caliber for home defense but it was in my budget & better then nothing, trying to find a hand gun in my area is almost impossible they're all sold out. I envy you living in Montana the only shooting you can do in the Chicago area is at an indoor range, 25 yard max. And 25 bucks an hour and my Savage 64 is dead on target at 25 yards without using my scope... Have a great day my friend

22's are great for harvesting rabbits, rabbit stew is one of my favorites! I still own the same AR-7 I bought when I graduated from high school. It will shoot any load and never jams and the rifle can float if dropped in water. If I need to keep a low profile I can walk around with it in a backpack or messenger bag as its very light and handy 🔫👍

I bought the 20 round mag. Right out of the box, it caused a lot of misfeeds. I spent a while with a dremel to clean up the feed track before it would work. I think I would stick with the original 10 round ones if you want them to work right away.

I was looking for an extended cocking arm for my 64F, and nobody had in stock at a reasonable price. So I found an inexpensive and easy way to extend the cocking arm myself. I used a knurled brass fitting which is part of a fitting used for connecting plastic water lines, and a 1/4” Flat head bolt in a fine thread. I tapped some 1/4 x 28 threads into the existing hole that is already in the center of the cocking arm. Then after painting the bolt head and the brass fitting black, I fastened them to the existing cocking handle using a little blue locktite to keep them together.

Great video. I love my savage 64f. It’s a solid rifle that can handle itself in multiple uses (hunting/defense). With that and my break barrel gamo magnum .22, procuring small/medium game will not be a problem. I love the cci blazer for this rifle and am looking forward to trying the mini mag and other types of the premium cci when I can finally find it. Tip, if one needs more mags call savage directly. The newer mags seem to be a little better than the one that came with the rifle. I found that pistol mag pouches make good carrying. Also this is a very good rifle out of the box especially for the price, but it lacks the aftermarket support that the 10/22 has. Would rather have a more durable rifle with free floating barrel than have to buy a bunch of aftermarket parts for the 10/22.

I just made a fairly inexpensive modification to my Savage 64F. I installed a set of Williams Fire Sights on it. Williams does not list any of their Fire Sights for the Savage 64 or 62 .22 caliber rifles. I decided to try the fire sights listed for the Ruger 10/22 and see if they would work, and they did. I drifted out the Savage front and rear sights. Drift out from the left side of the barrel towards the right because the part that fits in the dovetail on the barrel is tapered. The front sight was harder than the back sight to get out. The back sight came out easily. The Williams sights went in easily. Again. The front sight was harder to drive in. The rear went in easier. Before removing the sights you should mark the barrel with a pencil where the sights are centered so you can center the new sights. The Williams rear sIght has a set screw to hold it in place once you have sighted it in and adjusted it. Also the Williams Fire sIght has adjustable windage and elevation set screws. Part numbers for these sights are Williams 060213 or Ruger 90340.

You all need to stop saying that the .22LR is "good for small game, squirrels and plinking!". You would be extremely ignorant saying that the .22LR cannot kill a person and it's just as dangerous as any other cartridge. A .22LR incapacitates in 1.38 rounds, where a 9mm incapacitates in 2.45 rounds (Greg Ellifritz data from several decades worth of studies - available online as well). The MOSAD uses .22LR for assassinations. It's not a 'fun" little round. It's extremely lethal!

I absolutely agree. I'm italian and consider that the most famous italian serial killer killed 14 persons only using 22LR.

If it was the only 22 available and I needed one, I would buy it. But I don't know how you can say it has a good trigger. I saw a nice looking one for $99 last week. I asked to get the trigger lock off so I could try it. It was at least 7 lbs, probably more. In a vacuum, yes, it's a good rifle. Savage is quite capable of making a quality trigger, and my Mark2f is a great example at 3lbs trigger pull.

I have more 22 ammo than any other ammo. Because its cheap ammo. But i prefer more powerful ammo. But it cost so much, and getting harder to find. I have several 22 rifles and some 22 hand guns. 22 ammo is light. Easy to carry a few hundred rounds and not be heavy. But i also have several pellet rifles. Can carry 500 rounds of pellets and very little weight. I prefer the 10/22. I still have the first 22 rifle i learned to hunt with. It was my dads gun when he was a kid. Its the old tube load type of 22 rifle. We called it the magic 22, because we never missed with it.

Try to avoid Ruger 10/22. The rotary mags are not good for the ammo that has too much wax. I shot Eley Contact with my Ruger 10/22, and soon the rounds stopped coming out of the mags. I found that there was a circle of wax on the interior wall of each mag. With straight mags like those of this Savage 22lr, there won't be any jam problems like that with a Ruger 10/22.

Mine seems to hate that Winchester hollow points. When it shoots them it's super accurate, but it has issues feeding them. I have the original mag and 2 I bought a bit later. Any tips on making it feed hollow point ammo reliably?

I recently picked up a 64 takedown model. Haven't shot it yet. In my research on these rifles, I found that Savage recomends 40 gr solids,high velocity. They also recommend that the magazine be inserted with the bolt locked back.

@@chrispowell6673 It's also a good idea to fully load your new mags and let them sit for a week or so. That helps to break in the spring. I also like to download 1 or 2 rounds in my mags when I fire my guns. It seems to make the 1st round chamber better.
@Thirsty_Fox

@@chrispowell6673 I've seen some people say to only load the magazine to 8 rounds and it's more reliable. Always have to find the right 22LR for each rifle... The only 10/22s available are on gunbroker that are way over-priced (going for over $300) but people are buying them! Screw that, I decided to save $100 and found the savage 64FSS(stainless steel) for $199 at Academy today. It's still overpriced but I NEEDED a 22lr because I miss going to the range. I can't afford the 5.56 or 300blk ammo that my current rifles are chambered in. Let's not every talk about 9mm! I miss the good ol' days of cheap ammo circa 2019.
