Greg Loyd and Kevin Green were great on that Steelers defense. Steelers should’ve won Super Bowl that year . But dam the Bills were good in the 90s as well lol
Rod Woodson tore his ACL in week 1 of 95. Pro Bowl safety Carnell Lake converted to CB to pick up the slack and made the pro bowl in doing so. Amazing team. 60 Minute Men!
@@grottyband8052 If O'Donnell does not complete those two passes to Larry Brown, who knows? That's O'Donnell's Steeler legacy. All it takes is one bad game , and it had to be the SB. It was still an entertaining game, and a pretty good comeback in the 2nd half. But that last interception sealed the Steeler's fate. Dallas just capitalized greatly from the turnovers. That's football!
@@ivansanta-maria1328Not continuously though. In 1998 he joined Fox and was on their pregame show until 2002 when Pat Summerall retired and John Madden moved to MNF on ABC, in which Fox’s new A team for NFL commentary became Joe Buck, Troy Aikman and Cris Collinsworth. He’d work with those two until 2006 when he returned to NBC.
This version of the Bills team was like your favorite car that began showing wear and tear, and breaking down due to usage. The Bills went to 4 straight Super Bowls, and the pounding of the NFL was taking a toll on their bodies. Father time is undefeated! But these Bills certainly provided a lot of smiles during my childhood.
Facts Brian. I was a diehard bills fan growing up here in houston..loved the kgun offense..oilers were my second fave squad..marv levy and co ..this was the bills last go around. Defenses started up catch up to them.. . Mad memories thou
Truly the last hurrah for that version of The Bills. Should be noted that Bruce Smith missed this game & Andre Reed was dealing with a hamstring injury
As a Bills fan I think it was losing to Dallas the second time. Missed the playoffs in 94 and in 95 they were getting older. Then 96 they lose to the Jaguars and Kelly retired. Steelers from 94-96 should have went to 3 in a row but lost 2 AFC championships. 1994 was probably their best of the three.
The bills had a really good defense in 99 n 00 playoffs. Shit they almost beat the afc champ titans with rob johnson at QB if it weren’t for that miracle kick return TD with 19 secs left. Who knows how deep that team could’ve went if they kept flutie as the starter.
The sad, unfortunate thing is before Big Ben's arrival, the best QB Cowher had to rely upon and succeeded with the most was "Slash", Kordell Stewart. That's the one, big critical factor if you examine all those very good, 1990's Cowher Steelers teams, including the 1995 squad, they were missing that top 5-10 Pro-Bowl QB that could make things happen. I'm not a Steelers fan (Saints fan), but as an historian, I suppose in retrospect, once Big Ben had come in and achieved the bulk of his HOF-CALIBER career level success, it becomes obvious and clearer that what Cowher's teams from the 1990's was that extra 10-15% of greatness, achievement that a perennial Pro-Bowl QB brings to a contending team come January. It wasn't that Pittsburgh lacked great defensive players, future HOF RB's, WR's, Pro Bowl TE's, HOF O-lineman, they just didnt have that MVP-CALIBER QB.
@@davidroberts7282I've said it for years as well. Cowher never had a franchise qb until his last 3 seasons. He couldn't get over the hump and win the big one until he got a franchise qb to complete his team. Same could be said for almost every team.
The scores were weird, the Steelers jumped to a 20-0 lead, then the bills made a comeback to make the score 21-26 in the fourth quarter, but the Steelers ultimately won 40-21
The tables had turned in the AFC when the Steelers won this one. But if we had a QB as good as Jim Kelly, the Steelers could have had their 5th and 6th rings in the 90s.
Could have had Marino. Could have had Joe Montana when the 49ers called them up wanting to trade him and the Steelers said, "No, we're good with O'Donnell."
5th, sure, but likely not 6th. We were not beating San Fran in '94 and likely were not beating GB in '97. I do think with a QB the caliber of Jim Kelly we would've defeated Dallas in '95 though.
@@jaxonwoods8181 That is true. I probably jumped the gun a little on getting our 6th 😆. SF would have been a really tall order, but I know we would have given them a much better contest than San Diego. The Chargers had no business being there.
@@stevecowder4774 I agree with that. What hurts the most is that we almost knocked SD out of the playoffs with our BACKUPS in the last week of the '94 season (similar to how we almost knocked out the Browns in 2020 with our backups and then got thrashed by them the next week). Credit to SD, they had a good game plan similar to the Giants in SB XXV, in that they limited the amount of possessions we had in order to mitigate damage. It worked.
Bam Bam Morris was great back he reminded ya of The Bus . That was great 1-2 RB Steelers used back in the 90s. That’s Steelers FB and what they need to continue to do to move on in playoffs Run the ball
@@ST0NE_206 If O'Donnell doesn't throw those picks the Steelers win the game, without a doubt in my mind. Both picks to Larry Brown put the Cowboys in the red zone and gave them 14 points for free. People forget Cowher tried a surprise onside kick during the 4th quarter that actually worked, it led to a Steelers touchdown. On their next drive, the Steelers had the ball down by 3 with a chance to tie with a field goal or take the lead for the first time all game with another touchdown. Unfortunately O'Donnell's second interception gave the Cowboys 1st and goal and then another Emmitt Smith touchdown to put them up by 10. The Steelers held up much better against the Cowboys in the Super Bowl than either time the Bills faced them earlier that decade. It's just a fascinating scenario to think about.
I got some video ideas here: Chiefs vs Dolphins 1994 (Montana vs Marino rematch) Chiefs vs Dolphins 1990 (Marino leads Dolphins comeback) Browns vs Oilers 1988 Playoff Game Dolphins vs Chiefs 1971 (Longest game in NFL history)
Three Rivers Stadium was a very tough place to play. The Steelers fans were so loud. The block numerals on the Steelers uniforms look so good. I'm glad they incorporated them into an alternate home uniform
I use to seriously dislike Don Bebee so much. There was something so satisfying about this win. Hey NBC can you please get this intro music back? It’s the GOAT!
The way Neil O’Donnell held the FB in his hand was hard to watch at times lol. He would hold that ball and pump it down by his side before throwing it was always wild. Many many times was like waiting for strip fumble etc. Watching him Throw them picks in SB still haunts Steelers fans to this day
How the hell was that a TD on the pass to the back of the end zone? NFL used to let things slide. Zero chance that’s anywhere close to a TD. Dude was nowhere near getting his second foot down.
Because back then they ruled it a force out which resulted in a td. That’s why collinsworth said that there was no way he would have gotten 2 feet down even if he wasnt forced out
I was a little too young to completely remember this one, but I definitely remember the vibes around town during that time and into the Super Bowl. Thank you for this video. Here We Go Steelers!!
I think Big Ben did a lot more to help Steelers win far more convincingly, and consistently throughout his 18-year career then a QB like Neil O'Donnell who, in reality was maybe a few steps above being a really good, meddling average QB. Roethlisberger never had a losing season as Pittsburgh's QB in his two decade-long QB, he took the Steelers to three SB's, won two of them, may have appeared in and more SB's if it wasnt right in the middle of New England's legendary Dynasty teams. Ben is the franchise's all-time winniest QB, has the most career passing yards, TD's, every major statistical category, except SB wins, he's better then Terry Bradshaw. IMHO, Ben is probably the best QB in Steelers history. He had good defenses throughout most of his career, but lets face it, Big Ben didnt have HOF-caliber players at nearly every position that Terry had with those great, "Steel Curtain" defenses of the 1970's and early 80's.
@@Frankieefootballmundial No wrong No Marv Levy HC No Jim Kelly QB No Thurman Thomas RB No Andre Reed WR pretty much nobody from the 4 SB in a Row teams. Bills had Doug Flutie Rob Johnson at QB in that game The forward lateral game Not A Miracle
Took me a little while to figure out how a team that’s never won a Super Bowl could have a ten game playoff win streak. Finally figured out that it was talking about *AFC* playoffs. 😂
I remember this game. I'm a fan of neither team but I remember watching this in my Uncle's house and that was the last time I was ever in his house. Oh yeah 1:56 if you're thinking it, yup, it was common for fans to cheer injuries in those days.
Bruce Smith sat out this game, with the flu. I couldn't imagine TJ watt missing a playoff game, because of some soft 💩, like that. He would get killed in today's world
Defeated The Colts in The AFC Title game & lost Super Bowl to Dallas. There was a banner in Three Rivers that read "Three More Yards" in reference to the previous years loss to San Diego
The year before they were upset by the Chargers but the following year they went on to win the AFC Championship Game in thrilling fashion against the Indianapolis Colts, which is best known for Colts quarterback Jim Harbaugh throwing a Hail Mary pass that was ruled a dropped pass by officials in the end zone by the intended receiver, Aaron Bailey. However, the Steelers would fall to the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl XXX.
Second year in a row that the Steelers turned in probably their best performance of the season in the Divisional round of the playoffs. Just like the year before, they couldn't duplicate it in the AFC title game the next week, although they did win this one.
It’s amazing just how much better stadiums and playing surfaces - well most anyway - in the NFL are now. The old conference block stadiums with a green carpet basically on a cement playing surface have all been replaced. The stadiums are so much better visually now and the ones that have grass are ever better
This video did not age well! I am literally LMAO, because I know why this was posted 4 days ago. Steelers all time record against the Bills in playoffs stands at 2-2, and the Steelers are now home while the Bills advance after losing to the bills 31-17 in the wild card round! Bye Bye Pittsburgh! Lol! The Steelers had no answers for Josh Freaking Allen!
